Executive Vice-President, Operations

Fred Cleveland became WestJet’s Executive Vice-President, Operations on January 6, 2014. Fred will oversee technical operations including maintenance, WestJet's Guest Services (Airports) Team and Flight Operations including the Operational Control Center.
Fred Joins WestJet from a long career spent with both private sector airlines and the military. Fred was the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice-President of Technical Operations at American Eagle Airlines starting in December of 2009 where he was responsible for 1,700 flights a day to more than 150 North American destinations. Before that Fred was the Vice-President of Base Maintenance for American Airlines from 2008 through 2009.
Prior to joining American, Fred served 28 years in the U.S. Navy in a number of assignments including the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels, Navy Fighter Weapons School Top Gun, and Executive Officer of the Naval Air Depot. In his last assignment, holding the rank of Captain, Fred served as the Commanding Officer for the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, located in San Diego, California where, as CEO, he directed all phases of the Navy's largest airframe aviation industrial activity. He has completed several sea deployments, including service aboard aircraft carriers during Operation Desert Storm.
Fred received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Systems Management from the Naval Post Graduate School and is a PhD candidate at Oklahoma State University. He is certified by the Department of Defense in Manufacturing, Production and Quality. He is a Certified Professional Logistician by the Society of Logistical Engineers and holds a LEAN/Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
Born in Miami, Florida and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida, Fred loves water sports including swimming, scuba diving and sailing. He has three daughters, Ashley, Courtney and Emma. Fred and his wife Amy, a 26-year flight attendant, enjoy travelling to new cities. Their favourite WestJet destination is Orlando, Florida.
