Our hurricane/tropical storm promise

We know that having your trip interrupted by a hurricane or tropical storm is frustrating. That's why we've tried to make it as pain free as possible to reaccommodate your travel with the variety of options below. Please contact us as early as you can to ensure we are able to make the necessary changes. Hurricane/tropical storm travel advisories are issued based on information provided by the Canadian Hurricane Centre or the (American) National Hurricane Center.

Bookings made with AIR MILES® do not qualify for WestJet's hurricane/tropical storm promise. You must contact AIR MILES® to change or cancel your reservation.

  • Options when a hurricane/tropical storm advisory is issued BEFORE your trip starts

WestJet will waive the applicable change or cancellation fee, and you may:

      1. Cancel your reservation - we'll transfer the full amount paid into a Travel Bank credit valid for one year.
      2. Change your travel dates (subject to availability) to the same flight number, origin and destination.

      • Choose an earlier date, or a date up to and including 14 days after the original departure date and we'll waive any difference in fare.
      • Choose a date of 15 days or more after your original departure date and normal exchange and refund guidelines will apply.

      3. Change your destination - just pay any difference in fare. If your new itinerary costs less, we'll give you a Travel Bank credit for the difference.

If a hurricane or tropical storm travel advisory is issued for your origin or destination and travel dates, or if a hurricane has passed through your destination within one week before your arrival date, you may change or cancel your WestJet Vacations package.*

In all cases you must call WestJet Vacations at 1-877-737-7001 because suppliers including hotels, transfers, car rentals and excursions booked through WestJet Vacations, may be affected.

*The hurricane/tropical storm promise does not apply to WestJet Vacations Group bookings.

  • Options when a hurricane/tropical storm advisory is issued BEFORE your trip starts

WestJet Vacations will waive any change or cancellation fees. You are responsible for paying any increase in price if you change your itinerary. If your new itinerary costs less, we'll credit your WestJet dollar account with the difference. For cancellations, we'll put the unused value of your reservation into your WestJet dollar account.

      1. Change your dates to the same flight (with the same flight number, origin and destination), hotel and duration and complete travel within one year of the original itinerary (subject to availability).

    • Hotel vouchers are not provided for overnight connections in a Canadian gateway. You are responsible for any hotel costs.
    • If it is not possible to book the same travel duration and your time in destination has been:
      • Reduced: you will not be refunded for the unused nights. For example, if an original flight scheduled to leave on January 1, returning on January 8 was adjusted to leave on January 3, the return date would still be January 8.
      • Increased: you will be charged for the additional nights. Additional nights will be booked at the same hotel and room category as booked. If the hotel is unable to honour the date change, you are responsible for any additional costs. Changing dates may alter applicable promotions offered by suppliers.

      2. Change your destination - travel must be completed within one year of the original itinerary.

    • This option is subject to availability and requires a minimum of three days' notice.
    • Changing destinations may alter applicable promotions offered by suppliers.

      3. Cancel your package - we'll transfer the full amount paid into your WestJet dollar account.

      4. Continue travelling - at your own risk. If you choose to continue your trip after an advisory has been issued you and your flight is delayed due to the hurricane or tropical storm you are not eligible for compensation, a credit or refund of any kind.

      • WestJet Vacations will make a reasonable attempt to assist you by informing all suppliers and destination representative(s) of the new arrival date/time on behalf of guests.

  • Options when a hurricane/tropical storm advisory is issued WHILE you are at your destination

      1. Return early - subject to availability. We'll waive any fees and put the unused portion of your vacation package (remaining nights) into your WestJet dollar account.

    • If you are unable to return due to your flight being cancelled, WestJet will cover the cost of the additional nights at a hotel of WestJet's choosing.
