Tips on preparing your checked baggage:
- Please pack fragile items carefully to prevent damage.
- Make sure each piece of baggage is clearly marked with your name, address and phone number (including your work address and phone number is also a good idea). You should put a copy of this information inside your baggage as well. We have nametags available at the airport.
- Keep all loose handles, hooks and straps closed securely if you can, or remove them. These can catch on conveyors and belt loaders and cause damage to your baggage or other guests' baggage.
- Do not lock your baggage. All bags must be accessible for inspection.
- Never leave your baggage unattended at the airport - it could be subject to tampering and/or theft. Protect your baggage and personal belongings at all times.
- Make a list of items you have packed and their estimated value, and keep your list in a safe place.

Delayed or Damaged Baggage
WestJet successfully carries baggage for thousands of guests' each and every day and has one of the lowest mishandled baggage ratios when compared to North American carriers. Sometimes though, despite our best efforts, baggage may be delayed or damaged. Please read below for information on the steps we will take with you to make things right.
WestJet's Delayed Baggage Promise:
- Delayed baggage must be reported to a WestJet Customer Service Agent within one hour of arriving for domestic flights, and 24 hrs for international flights.
- Our agent will create a Delayed Baggage Report for you. You'll be asked for contact information, and a description of your baggage and contents to assist in the search.
- Most delayed baggage arrives within 24 hours but if you have reached your destination, and your baggage has not been recovered within 24 hours, you will be authorized to spend up to $25 a day for 3 days to help cover the cost of incidental expenses while we continue to search.
- During the first 3 days, our Airport agents will search for your baggage, and after the 3rd day, the search will be taken over by our Central Baggage Services Team Team.
- A member of the Central Baggage Services Team will contact you to collect more detailed information to assist them with an intensive secondary search.
- In rare cases where the bag is not recovered within 30 days, the Central Baggage Service Team will settle your claim up to WestJet's maximum liability of $250, excluding interim expenses of up to $75 (for flights within Canada) and up to 1,000 Special Drawing Rights, including incidental expenses, for international flights.
- If the value of your bag contents exceeds WestJet's liability, you may wish to consider purchasing baggage insurance through your own insurance company, prior to travel.
WestJet's Damaged Baggage Promise
WestJet does everything possible to ensure careful baggage handling, but occasionally baggage or contents can be damaged during the sorting and loading processes.
- Damage to baggage or contents must be reported to a WestJet Customer Service Agent within 24 hours of your arrival for domestic flights or 7 days for international flights.
- Our agent will ask you to fill out some documentation and report the problem immediately.
- When damage is reported and deemed the result of negligence or accident on part of WestJet or its representatives, you'll be offered either immediate settlement with a Future Travel Credit equal to the cost of repair, or we'll arrange to have your baggage repaired at our cost.
- Guests reporting damage at a Charter destination will have a damage report taken and asked to check with a Customer Service Agent when they return to Canada.
- Please ensure items are securely packed to avoid damage, breakage or spillage.
Please note: For domestic travel, WestJet's maximum liability for lost or damaged baggage and lost contents as a result of damage is $250.00 per person, per incident. For international travel, WestJet's liability will be limited by either the Montréal or the Warsaw Convention, as applicable. In most cases, the limitation amount will be 1,000 Special Drawing Rights. WestJet assumes no liability for (but not limited to) fragile, valuable, or perishable articles including money, jewellery, cameras, video and electronic equipment, silverware, negotiable instruments, business documents, samples, antiques, paintings, furs, manuscripts, or similar items. WestJet does not compensate for zippers, scruffs, scratches, nicks, dents, missing straps, feet, clips and wheels, exterior tube handles or similar damage attributable to normal wear and tear.
