For a truly Californian experience come and stay in the American Riviera – Santa Barbara, California. It’s a quaint yet bustling city with Spanish colonial architecture framing tree-lined streets, where a day can be spent roaming the chic boutiques, playing in the Pacific surf, biking around Steams Wharf or visiting the Urban Wine Trail. Visit the Old Santa Barbara Mission or the Presidio de Santa Barbara State historic park for a glimpse of life as it was hundreds of years ago.

It’s a toss-up as to what Santa Barbara may be best known for. It could be the community’s artistic spirit as demonstrated by the many festivals, musical and theatre performances or fine art exhibits that crop up throughout the year. Perhaps it’s the cuisine here that could make any foodie salivate at the mere thought of the scrumptious treats on offer. Or maybe it’s the scenic backdrops that have inspired movie producers and Hollywood actors to film blockbuster pictures here.

Culture is something that locals and visitors alike immerse themselves in every day in the museums, art galleries, theatres and open-air concert spaces. The Santa Barbara Bowl is home to the performing arts and is the largest amphitheatre in the county, hosting everyone from pop and rock artists, jazz and classical musicians, folk singers and stand-up comedians.

The festival spirit is contagious in Santa Barbara itself, too. Check out the traditional Old Spanish Fiesta every August, the whimsical Summer Solstice Parade in June and the star-studded Santa Barbara International Film Festival in late January/early February. Or take part in the year’s biggest and most anticipated event, the Santa Barbara County Wine Vintner’s Festival.

In this region renowned for using local and sustainable ingredients in virtually every beachside cafe, laid-back bistro, chic eatery or top-notch restaurant, the cuisine you will find is not only delicious and fresh but is all part of the authentic dining experience in this gastronomic paradise. Santa Barbara eateries, specialty markets and bakeries offer all sorts of delectable delights. Here you can get the freshest regional fruit and vegetables, fresh-caught seafood, and chicken and beef from local ranchers. And don’t forget the artisan cheeses, handmade chocolates, world-class wines from the Santa Ynez Valley, and award-winning microbrewery beers. Make your visit to Santa Barbara a culinary exploration and your taste buds will be forever grateful.

California’s first major movie studio, Flying A Studios, was a pioneer in the industry of silent films in the 1920’s and was located in Santa Barbara. Many early filmmakers during that time were living and working here, earning it the title of the “original” Hollywood until the shift of the studios to move further down the coast to Los Angeles a few decades later. Today it is still an extremely popular location for filming, and recent movies set in Santa Barbara have been nominated and winners of Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

On the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara has miles and miles of beaches, ideal for a solitary stroll or romantic rendezvous, soaking up the sun or watching the horizon for whales. With over 50 parks and public spaces, there’s also plenty of space for picnicking, ultimate Frisbee, bird-watching or simply taking a catnap under the shade of a swaying palm tree. Sounds blissful…
