I write this review tyring to be fair, keeping in mind that my vacation was ruined by the hotel being over run with over 600 college kids from the u.s. Had I known this I would never have come with my family expecting a family vacation at a family resort. -Long line ups of over 30 minutes to get a drink at all the bars -Running out of liquers -no room at the swim up bars filled with college kids, no beach chairs left, loud and bad language and smoking everywhere. Ok, enough said, to be fair, had the kids not been there. Yes, it was a nice place for the value I paid, rooms ok, views great, and the hotel itself a bit run down but very clean. - Food was great, no complaints, nice variety always changing. - Bars were limited for drinks - Pool was too cold but to be fair weather was also cold - Beach is not bad, but filled with smoke butts, the staff tries their best to keep it clean - shortage of beach huts or shade. - great entertainment, always looked forward to the 9pm show, would be nice if it was a bit earlier. - great location to walk to town for shopping and experiences. - snorkelling not great but again the bad weather probably affected this. - expensive internet and very slow.... not good for having to pay for it. So with all that said, it was a nice place for a family (JUST DON'T GO DURING SPRING BREAK OR ANY COLLEGE BREAKS) Had I known this I would not have booked here and never again will I go to Jamaica during spring break. Price much less comparable to nicer resorts, I think its a great lower end option.

This hotel is perfectly located in Ocho Rios, you can easily walk from the resort into the duty free shopping district and craft markets. We had a fantastic time here and enjoyed all of the activities the resort has to offer. The rooms are typical hotel rooms but all have a balcony (only used to dry clothes, the beach is the better place for morning coffee). The beach is great and private so no one is bothering to sell you something. The cruise ships were only in a few of our vacation days and did not bother us - they made great waves when they departed. If you wake up in the morning and see a cruise ship in port you know it is not a good day to go shopping or do tours. Dunn's river falls is a must do! We found the best snorkling right at the resort - and it is free! The food has a variety for everyone with lots of fresh fruit and typical favorites like hamburgers and fries.

I would absolutely recommend going here. We went with our 3 kids (2,8,17) and had a blast. I was a little apprehensive when booking at the Sunset Jamaica Grand report based on the previous reviews I'd read. Yes the resort is dated but it's very clean and the staff are amazing. Check in was easy and quick. Staff throughout the resort was fantastic. (expecially Sonia in the dining room). The entertainment staff worked hard and they did keep us entertained. From pool side activites to the nightly shows, we were impressed. Each night the entertainemnt was varied and all of our 3 kids loved it. We had pirate shows, magic shows, battle of the sexes, fire, snakes, limbo etc. We looked forward to the nightly entertainment everyday. They even got my 17 year old up on stage in a dance competition. Now for the bar, I could get whatever I wanted. I wasn't stuck to draft, cheap liquor as some other reviews stated. My kids were able to go up as well and get kid friendly drinks. They actually have a list of slushee drinks they could order. (kids favorite was the Jamaican lemonade) As for the food, yes it wasn't the best I'd ever had but they did cater to the kids with fries, grilled cheeses etc. We found breakfast was the best, lunch was ok and the diners were better. We booked 3 a la carte diners and loved them. I also liked the pool side grill as it was open all day so you were never without a place to grab something to eat. The pools are nice and very clean. The beaches are even better. You can snorkel right off the private beach. We had access to kayaks, paddle boats, a sailing boat they'd take you out on. There was always something to do. If you do leave the resort Dunn's falls are a must. Lots of lounge chairs were availble so we didn't have to get up at 6am to through a towel on a chair. Beach Towels did run out every so often but you only had to wait a short time before more came. Great value for what we paid and I'd go back in a heart beat.

Checkin was poor, we arrived at approx 5pm and did not get rooms until 9 pm and then had to take a non oceanfront room because the amount of rooms we booked were not available. When we arrived in the rooms our room on the 15th floor did not have A/C, we called the desk and were told someone would be right up, three hours later noone so we called again and were told that we would be called right back with an answer. Noone ever returned our call. After a hot and sleepless night we complained to the desk in the morning and finally on the afternoon of our second day the A/C was repaired. We discussed the room situation with the representative onsite and she was able to get the rooms sorted out for us on day 2 and it was moved to oceanfront. The rooms are dated looking and evidence of water leakage in ceilings and other areas. The linups for meals were long and by the time the buffet tables were reached lots of the items were empty and the kitchen could not keep up with the demand. The bar linups were the same and bartenders made it seem like it was a bother to serve you. Another item was a tour booked through the hotel for 11 people to fish and snorkel for the day. We were sold a 46 foot boat for an 8 hour day. When we arrived we were given a 42 foot boat that was mechanically in poor condition, it was billowing black diesel smoke makeing several people onboard sick, the L/H engine was leaking oil out the exhaust into the water. Reverse would not work on one engine from the captains controls so the first mate had to go in the bilge and shift it with coordinated shouting of positions relayed from the captain to myself to the first mate. The steering would cut in and out and between the shifting problem and this caused us to contact another boat while trying to dock to pick up snorkel equipt. Overall a very disapointing and expensive experience!! Best part of the trip was checking out of there. This is a 4 star view in a 2 star establishment.

It was a nightmare for the first two days. As they stuck my brother and I in a room that was on the top floor, which is not what I asked for. The sliding glass door would not open. Then we almost got locked in our when my brother tried to unlcok the door. When I demanded another room they told it was not possible. I spent the first 2 days arguing with the tour guy from Air Canada about the room. After having to talk to the nice lady in the offices were we shown another roon which was fine. As for the rest of the trip it was just ok. The buffet was so so. The restaurants that you have to reserve, the portions were very small and I mean small. The renovations to the balconies at the south tower was bothersome. The jackhammers and tile cutters. Jack hammering the balconies was a headache. I could go on and on. But I would not go back there.

Our whole trip from the start to the end was AMAZING! There were so many excursions available at our hotel. We went bobsledding in Jamicia, saw crocodiles, swam in water falls, zip lining, tour Appleton rum factory and enjoyed the beaches. Everyday was a new amazing adventure. The food at the hotel was wonderful from jerk chicken to French fries every bit was so very tasty. There is a fresh water, water slide and a salt water one on the resort as well. And just down the road a huge market, we recommend going on a Thursday or Friday though, they are very pushy with sales there and on those days there are people to make sure you aren?t pushed around as much. Befor you travel to the Sunset Jamaica grand you need to consider what your expectations are. I travelled with a group of friends and we all wanted hot vacation in a good lcation for an amazing price, and thats what we got here! The hotel itself is older and does need upgrades but the food was good teh sun was hot and the service was great! I would rate the hotel a 3 star with 5 star potential! The Sunset Jamaica grand in located in Ocho Rios, about 2 hours from the airport but well worth the drive. It is in walking distance to shopping and many excursions are in the area so no long bus ride every time you want to do something fun! My friends and I did quite a few excursions and would defianately recomend them! The best one was the Cool Runnings Dunns River Falls tour (known as the booze cruise). The Dunns River Falls is a must but the cruise was a blast! Although we are in our 20's one of my firends mom went on this after us (she just turned 50) and she also loved it! We also did the White River tubing and the Luminous Lagoon and our other friends did the zipline all excursions were great and surprisingly affordable! (I did 3 of the 4 and it was about $200 USD total per person) This was my second time to Jamaica and I can't wait o go back there one day!

What a great vacation. My husband and I just returned less than a week ago. The food was great, the staff were more than helpful--always had smiles on their faces. The beach was my cup of tea: calm, clear and shallow. The rooms were clean and it was great to have the assurance of being able to have clean and safe drinking water. The entertainment was well done and the best part was the view of the sunsets every night--breathtaking! We had a fantastic time and would definitely be open to revisiting the resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

We flew to Jamaica in February and stayed at the Sunset Jamaica Grand Resort in Ocho Rios. I have to say that Jamaica is one of my favorite places to visit now; the country is beautiful and the people are so friendly. Our resort was really nice; lots of pools, restaurants, and entertainment. The beaches were a bit small, but we still enjoyed ourselves. The food in Jamaica is amazing - very flavorful....and the best part is that you can drink their water :) A recommended tour we did is the Cataraman that takes you out to Dunn River Falls. At the falls, you can climb them and they are absolutely beautiful - definitely worth the money. The resort is situated right in the town of Ocho Rios, so you are literally steps away from great shopping. Take advantage of it and buy some of Jamaica's amazing spices, rum and coffee. All in all, a great vacation and we would definitely go back to Jamaica!!

Loved the trip in Jamaica Ochio Rios!!! We stayed at The Sunset Jamaica Grande resort and staff there was great. We could walk around the whole resort without carrying our wallet! The all inclusive price covers all taxes and tips!!! as stated on their website. I loved the idea of going to a restaurant to eat and then just leaving. The entertainment they had on site at night was also very fun. The private beach there was GREAT with soft white sand, and no one will solicit you.

We were planning on going to Jamaica over Christmas but as life goes, plans change. Two weeks after Christmas a great deal came up for the sunset Jamaica Grande in Ochio Rios. We went with our three kids ages 10, 7 and 4. It was there first trip and we couldn't have had a better time. The staff were great (specially Dallan at the bar). We took a bike tour up in the blue mountains (which are breath taking). We also swimmed with dolphins at dolphin cove. We fell in love with Jamaica and we will definately be going back.

My first trip ever seeing the Carribean......ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! We went to Jamaica, for my sister's wedding! The weather was great, the Carribean an amazing vast sea of sky blue, watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets from our balcony of our oceanfront room, great family and friends, and a Gazebo by the ocean for a beautiful wedding, what more could you ask for? I took my son to Dolphin's Cove near Ocho Rios, a truly amazing experience being that close with the dolphins! An experience of a life time! You also have to try "Evita's" while in Ocho Rios!!!! It is the BEST little Italian restaurant, overlooking Ocho Rios!

Jamaica is breath taking from it's sunset/rises, beaches and the culture. I can't wait to go back! The Jamaica Grand had amazing food, amenities and service. There is a fresh water waterslide and a salt water one. We went just after hurricane season so the resort wasn't overly full. Which was great no line ups at the bars and the amenities. They have great evening shows and theme parties during the week. I won the Pirate dress up contest and got a t-shirt. One of our group another night won the dress like a Jamaican contest and got a hand carved mask. Every day and night was filled with plenty to do! And they even have a temporary tattoo artist on site for a small charge (make sure to barter with her as the price does come down lol). Some of our group went to the spa and had a wonderful time. One Girl had her hair braided there (although it turned out, to have it done on the beach at the resort was cheaper then the spa) and another one had her hair chemically straightened (for less then 1/3 the cost she was paying in Canada). Every Day was filled with amazing delights I really can't say enough to express how amazing our trip was!

This was my first trip to an all inclusive and all I can say is AMAZING why haven't I done this sooner? The hotel had wonderful service, the food was soooo good. We did book a restaurant at the hotel one night, it was on the beach and you could hear the waives splashing up. And the chefs out did them selves. And the jerk chicken there aren't words to describe how yummy it was at the walk up restaurants. We also did some tours, we say aligators, a rum factory, Bob Marley's estate, bob sledding (which was a roller coaster down the side of a mountain that you could stop just like a bobsled, you could reach out and touch the jungle surrounding you), a gonadal. One thing to note is the shops are very pushy about selling their merchandise but on Thursdays and Fridays in Ochi Rios there are men in white hats there to make sure they don't get pushy. Make sure to get a Bob Marley shooter, it's 3 colors and tasty and some times they light to the top on fire lol. I can't wait to go back! It was so very amazing!

First thing first, the negative reviews that people have given this resort are very inaccurate. This is a beautiful resort with many things going one and many things to do each day. The resort has great food and the staff is outstanding. The rooms are your standard hotel rooms but they are very bright and inviting. We did stay in the north tower and the entertainment was loud at times but nothing that you couldn't sleep through. After our first night in the north tower we decided to stay. The beaches were great, the drinks were great, the pools were great, the food was great, the staff was great, and the rooms were great. There are a few people I want to thank... Ked and Dwayne, lifeguards on the north beach, are the best of the best. They were great to be around and the entire family loved them. They made everyday an awesome day (we were at the beach daily from 9:00 to 5:00). My son Timmy absolutely loved them both and enjoyed being able to mess around with them and to just talk to them. Horace the bartender. He is great as well. He would remember who you were and remember what you drank. Mrs. Miller at the tennis courts. Although we only got to play tennis once on our trip Mrs. Miller took time to teach my Dad, Brother, and myself a little about tennis and even played a match with us. We can't wait to come back! My wife and I are already saving for another trip. Hopefully SJG offers discounts to returning guests.

Stayed here over the week of Easter with my Aunt and Grandma in the cabana section and we had a great time. The beach is gorgeous and there were plenty of spots available to park yourself each day. Joseph and his jerk chicken were amazing at the beach grill. All the staff were warm and friendly. Marcia took good care of us every morning at breakfast :) and even reserved our usual table for us each morning. My room was clean and bright and the bathroom was nicely renovated and I had a nice large king bed. The food was good each night in the main buffet as well as at lunch when we didn't eat the jerk chicken. The patties were excellent by the pool as well. Wade at the lobby bar was a real sweetheart too and some how everyone seems to remember your face after only one interaction. I can't remember the name of the guy at the front desk but I only saw him once when I checked in and then when I checked out he remembered checking me in and asked where my Aunt and Grandma were as they were staying 10 days and I only stayed 7. I can't understand at all what people on here are complaining about. I never had any of the foods like hot dogs or french fries or burgers anything like that so maybe that's the food people are complaining about? You're in Jamaica... why not try what they do best? The Jamaican food, the fried dumplings and plantain at breakfast were amazing as well as the bammy, the callaloo and all the fruits. All in all it was an amazing time and I cannot wait to come back! I miss it already and I've only been back a day.

Overall a good hotel but there are a few things that you should be aware of when booking. The hotel is under new management so there have been some changes very recently that perhaps the December posts don't cover. The overall condition of the hotel is very good and fits the four star rating. Service from general grounds staff overall was excellent. Food at the majority and restaurants was very good, served hot (with only a few exceptions). The room condition themselves were typical hotel rooms with both furniture and sheets in good condition. The resort doctor is VERY good, but please make sure you get comprehensive medical insurance before visiting. We had blue cross and didn't have to pay a dime but he did bill our provider 1600 for my partners very server ear infection. I would have to say that this is on par with the treatment he received for multiple medical visits and medication. We reviewed what was down with our regular doctor upon returning home and he gave him 5 gold stars :) Tour agents were fairly good they will only book you on the agencies that work with their hotels. So if you want to book something like diving which is not offered through the hotel they will not help you or give you direction. However we had no problem booking other activities. They do charge a bit more that what it would cost to book the tours directly maybe 5 bucks? Some Problems: Front desk staff! I understand that this is a hard job and that they are the front lines to dealing with problems customers face in the hotel however that is not excuse for lying, ignoring, and being rude. This is not to paint everyone with the same brush as there were a some general wonderful people. However when we had problems with our neighbor no one would address this concern, moving our room was a nightmare and taking ownership over lack of communication between staff was the key source. When we had asked to speak with a manager no one was willing to come and speak with us but they did resolve the issue over the phone with a member of staff. For anyone visiting I would recommend writing down the names of the people you speak with if you do have a problem, times and dates also help. The kids clubs (not that this affected us) apparently has dissolved when we were there, there no longer is a kids pool and the activities are child directed (meaning a staff member will do whatever they want). Drugs, this only happened the first day and everyone I spoke to around the pool had a similar experience. On the first day when we checking out the hotel grounds for the first time we were approached by 4 different members of staff offering drugs, directly and very openly as well as on the bus ride to the hotel. Head waiter of Paid Seafood restaurant made me cry, it was a bad joke that went on for far to long. We had been misinformed to proceed directly to the restaurant when we booked it by. The head waiter took our reservation slip told us it was not valid and that we were lying. I was blown away I didn't get mad but we had a pretty rough day with my partner getting infection that required the resort doctors attention I was speechless. He continued up with this apparent act for over 5 mins, and only stopped when I started to cry and just started walking toward reception. He never apologized and just said he was joking. He did not have a name tag on so I didn't get his name. Overall: we are laid back travelers this resort I would rate as a 3.5 star, it was in a good location had good food, for the most part good service. Were there problems? Yes but we didn't let them ruin our stay.
