loved it there great resort, recomend it to everyone. The only problem we did have was room service-we rang twice once for a jug of waterand another time for toilet paper to which they seemed very inthused on the phone but we never recieved .there were no water machines available so you had to wait for the gift shop to open or retaurants to open. They say you can drink tap water but we did not wish to do so ,prefered filter water. otherwise people and staff were very friendly .

I write this review tyring to be fair, keeping in mind that my vacation was ruined by the hotel being over run with over 600 college kids from the u.s. Had I known this I would never have come with my family expecting a family vacation at a family resort. -Long line ups of over 30 minutes to get a drink at all the bars -Running out of liquers -no room at the swim up bars filled with college kids, no beach chairs left, loud and bad language and smoking everywhere. Ok, enough said, to be fair, had the kids not been there. Yes, it was a nice place for the value I paid, rooms ok, views great, and the hotel itself a bit run down but very clean. - Food was great, no complaints, nice variety always changing. - Bars were limited for drinks - Pool was too cold but to be fair weather was also cold - Beach is not bad, but filled with smoke butts, the staff tries their best to keep it clean - shortage of beach huts or shade. - great entertainment, always looked forward to the 9pm show, would be nice if it was a bit earlier. - great location to walk to town for shopping and experiences. - snorkelling not great but again the bad weather probably affected this. - expensive internet and very slow.... not good for having to pay for it. So with all that said, it was a nice place for a family (JUST DON'T GO DURING SPRING BREAK OR ANY COLLEGE BREAKS) Had I known this I would not have booked here and never again will I go to Jamaica during spring break. Price much less comparable to nicer resorts, I think its a great lower end option.

Beach sitting area was wonderful. Yes, Hotel does need to buy some new stuff for kids to play ping pong and some more board game, on the whole, it was pleasant. Would love to visit again

A perfect place to stay in Ocho Rios

This hotel is perfectly located in Ocho Rios, you can easily walk from the resort into the duty free shopping district and craft markets. We had a fantastic time here and enjoyed all of the activities the resort has to offer. The rooms are typical hotel rooms but all have a balcony (only used to dry clothes, the beach is the better place for morning coffee). The beach is great and private so no one is bothering to sell you something. The cruise ships were only in a few of our vacation days and did not bother us - they made great waves when they departed. If you wake up in the morning and see a cruise ship in port you know it is not a good day to go shopping or do tours. Dunn's river falls is a must do! We found the best snorkling right at the resort - and it is free! The food has a variety for everyone with lots of fresh fruit and typical favorites like hamburgers and fries.

I would absolutely recommend going here. We went with our 3 kids (2,8,17) and had a blast. I was a little apprehensive when booking at the Sunset Jamaica Grand report based on the previous reviews I'd read. Yes the resort is dated but it's very clean and the staff are amazing. Check in was easy and quick. Staff throughout the resort was fantastic. (expecially Sonia in the dining room). The entertainment staff worked hard and they did keep us entertained. From pool side activites to the nightly shows, we were impressed. Each night the entertainemnt was varied and all of our 3 kids loved it. We had pirate shows, magic shows, battle of the sexes, fire, snakes, limbo etc. We looked forward to the nightly entertainment everyday. They even got my 17 year old up on stage in a dance competition. Now for the bar, I could get whatever I wanted. I wasn't stuck to draft, cheap liquor as some other reviews stated. My kids were able to go up as well and get kid friendly drinks. They actually have a list of slushee drinks they could order. (kids favorite was the Jamaican lemonade) As for the food, yes it wasn't the best I'd ever had but they did cater to the kids with fries, grilled cheeses etc. We found breakfast was the best, lunch was ok and the diners were better. We booked 3 a la carte diners and loved them. I also liked the pool side grill as it was open all day so you were never without a place to grab something to eat. The pools are nice and very clean. The beaches are even better. You can snorkel right off the private beach. We had access to kayaks, paddle boats, a sailing boat they'd take you out on. There was always something to do. If you do leave the resort Dunn's falls are a must. Lots of lounge chairs were availble so we didn't have to get up at 6am to through a towel on a chair. Beach Towels did run out every so often but you only had to wait a short time before more came. Great value for what we paid and I'd go back in a heart beat.

Checkin was poor, we arrived at approx 5pm and did not get rooms until 9 pm and then had to take a non oceanfront room because the amount of rooms we booked were not available. When we arrived in the rooms our room on the 15th floor did not have A/C, we called the desk and were told someone would be right up, three hours later noone so we called again and were told that we would be called right back with an answer. Noone ever returned our call. After a hot and sleepless night we complained to the desk in the morning and finally on the afternoon of our second day the A/C was repaired. We discussed the room situation with the representative onsite and she was able to get the rooms sorted out for us on day 2 and it was moved to oceanfront. The rooms are dated looking and evidence of water leakage in ceilings and other areas. The linups for meals were long and by the time the buffet tables were reached lots of the items were empty and the kitchen could not keep up with the demand. The bar linups were the same and bartenders made it seem like it was a bother to serve you. Another item was a tour booked through the hotel for 11 people to fish and snorkel for the day. We were sold a 46 foot boat for an 8 hour day. When we arrived we were given a 42 foot boat that was mechanically in poor condition, it was billowing black diesel smoke makeing several people onboard sick, the L/H engine was leaking oil out the exhaust into the water. Reverse would not work on one engine from the captains controls so the first mate had to go in the bilge and shift it with coordinated shouting of positions relayed from the captain to myself to the first mate. The steering would cut in and out and between the shifting problem and this caused us to contact another boat while trying to dock to pick up snorkel equipt. Overall a very disapointing and expensive experience!! Best part of the trip was checking out of there. This is a 4 star view in a 2 star establishment.

It was a nightmare for the first two days. As they stuck my brother and I in a room that was on the top floor, which is not what I asked for. The sliding glass door would not open. Then we almost got locked in our when my brother tried to unlcok the door. When I demanded another room they told it was not possible. I spent the first 2 days arguing with the tour guy from Air Canada about the room. After having to talk to the nice lady in the offices were we shown another roon which was fine. As for the rest of the trip it was just ok. The buffet was so so. The restaurants that you have to reserve, the portions were very small and I mean small. The renovations to the balconies at the south tower was bothersome. The jackhammers and tile cutters. Jack hammering the balconies was a headache. I could go on and on. But I would not go back there.

Our whole trip from the start to the end was AMAZING! There were so many excursions available at our hotel. We went bobsledding in Jamicia, saw crocodiles, swam in water falls, zip lining, tour Appleton rum factory and enjoyed the beaches. Everyday was a new amazing adventure. We all agree that we can?t wait to go back. Also the hotel sold phone cards and for 4 US dollars we had 1.5 hours of call home time in case you need to check on things. The food at the hotel was wonderful from jerk chicken to French fries every bit was so very tasty. There is a fresh water, water slide and a salt water one on the resort as well. And just down the road a huge market, we recommend going on a Thursday or Friday though, they are very pushy with sales there and on those days there are people to make sure you aren?t pushed around as much. And the hotel had contests one couple won the best dress tourist contest and got a carved mask in our group and I won the best dress pirate and got a T-shirt. There wasn?t a moment that we weren?t doing something can?t wait to go back!!

Very pleased with hotel facilities, food, pool and beach, but the room itself was run down and needs a facelift. All and all though, we got a great deal and were very satisfied.

We got a great deal and were very satisfied with the food, pool, beach and hotel facilities. The room itself fell a little short. It was clean, but run down. Definitely due to be refurbished.

Befor you travel to the Sunset Jamaica grand you need to consider what your expectations are. I travelled with a group of friends and we all wanted hot vacation in a good lcation for an amazing price, and thats what we got here! The hotel itself is older and does need upgrades but the food was good teh sun was hot and the service was great! I would rate the hotel a 3 star with 5 star potential! The Sunset Jamaica grand in located in Ocho Rios, about 2 hours from the airport but well worth the drive. It is in walking distance to shopping and many excursions are in the area so no long bus ride every time you want to do something fun! My friends and I did quite a few excursions and would defianately recomend them! The best one was the Cool Runnings Dunns River Falls tour (known as the booze cruise). The Dunns River Falls is a must but the cruise was a blast! Although we are in our 20's one of my firends mom went on this after us (she just turned 50) and she also loved it! We also did the White River tubing and the Luminous Lagoon and our other friends did the zipline all excursions were great and surprisingly affordable! (I did 3 of the 4 and it was about $200 USD total per person) This was my second time to Jamaica and I can't wait o go back there one day!

My boyfriend and I are a young couple and we most appreciated the "party vibes" at this resort. We had a great time participating in the daily games and dances at the pool, and really liked the night club inside the resort. They played great music and had a big crowd, even on a Tuesday night. The rooms were clean and very nice. I wasn't expecting them to be so nice! The food was horrible, that's the only reason why I'm not giving this hotel 5 stars. I mean the food was so bad...couldn't have been worst. But even more of a reason to leave the resort grounds and try out the local restaurants. Support the local businesses! There was one moment that made me uneasy. One of the employees who stands in the front of the lobby (not sure if he's security or in charge of the taxis), had something to say under his breath about the manner in which my boyfriend chose to walk up to the lobby from the parking lot. (He walked in the driveway and not on the sidewalk.) The man told him to come off of the driveway in a really aggressive way, but didn't realize I understood Patois, because I am white, and must have assumed I didn't hear him. He kept talking about my boyfriend under his breath, and I finally had to turn around and give him a look. He is clearly miserable and hates his job, but I wish people like that wouldn't have to work in the hospitality industry. I wish the management knew what kind of person they have greeting the guests. It made me very uncomfortable, as I wasn't able to hear him well enough to know exactly what he was saying, I just knew he was talking about my boyfriend and assumed I couldn't understand his language. Other than that, this is not a romantic hotel, but great for young people looking to party and for those on a budget. Great price and AWESOME location. Big ups to the MC - we really enjoyed him! And remember to TIP THE STAFF (discreetly) because they get paid pennies. Tips go a long way for them.

Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort had great food. My only thing that I think needs improvement would be that is an all-inclusive resor. I better drink selections. all liquor was bottom shelf. the only beer served was red stripe. Hotel itself would do better if they had staff walking around asking if you needed a drink, instead of have to walk to a bar each time. most of the staff was friendly. the rooms could use an update. Cleaning up around the resort could use improvement during the day. there is only focus at dawn. we arrived at 1330 and was not able to get our room til 1500. But while we waited for our room we were able to drink and eat. Beaches were great.

If you are looking for a fancy, upscale resort - this is not your place. Our room was and Ocean Front in the North Tower, right near the night club and we were able to sleep just fine. If you need it to be absolutely silent while you sleep, request the South Tower if possible. There are multiple pools and two different beach areas - so you can choose whatever kind of vibe you want while you are visiting. There is definitely something for everyone. I don't travel to sit in a hotel room all day (you aren't really visiting a country if you sit poolside all day long either) and there are a large variety of excursions within forty minutes of the resort. (I HIGHLY recommend Alphonso Aarons from Jamaica Tours [Jaital] as a driver/guide - he is absolutely amazing and probably the main reason I loved our trip so much!) The food is excellent - especially the Jerk Chicken at the South Beach Grill. The times that the restaurants are each open are perfect, each one is open exactly when we were craving that type of food. The location was amazing - it is right in the heart of Ocho Rios so you can walk to the market area to buy goods. The locals there are going to try to hustle you, but if you say no thank you they are very respectful. Remember, you aren't in the States anymore, be open minded and respectful of the culture, locals and of the other guests.

My wife and I travel a good deal and I've written many reviews for Trip Advisor. In Jamaica, I've reviewed the Holiday Inn Sunspree, Royal Decameron, Ambiance, and others. We just returned from the Sunset Grande in Ocho Rios and it must be added to the list. We usually stay in the 3-star to 4-star (value) resorts where you get a little more for your money so my reviews are comparisons of those type properties. What I am getting at here, is that I'm not comparing these properties to 5-star properties and I'm not reviewing them with no knowledge of other such properties. I think my reviews are pretty accurate. You can make of them what you wish. Ocho Rios: First off, let me say that I really like Ocho Rios - much more so than Montego Bay. There just isn't the hassle encountered in Montego Bay when you walk downtown and there are plenty of good places to shop. Restaurants: I have absolutely no complaints about the food. In my opinion the food was superior to that found in most Jamaican resorts and the specialty restaurants were exceptional. Rooms: The resort consists primarily of two towers. The North Tower is the older of the two and it is where we stayed. I was very disappointed with the room. It was impossible to regulate the A/C, the mirror was so beat-up you could barely see yourself in it, and the hair dryer wouldn't even reach the mirror that you couldn't use anyway. Of all the properties we've stayed, the Sunset Grande rooms are among the worse. I spoke with other guests who stayed in the South Tower and while the rooms seem to be in a little better condition, there were still many complaints - which brings me to my next rating category. House Keeping: The house keeping service was terrible. You were very lucky if you got clean towels at all (and that goes for both towers). We would return to the room hot and sweaty almost daily and be unable to take a shower because there were no towels. Calling the desk would get you a promise but not much more. Usually they would just open the door at 2:00a.m. or 3:00a.m. while you are sleeping and leave them on the floor. Bar Service: The bar service was typical for this grade of resort. Facilities: The pools were clean and although we didn't utilize the beach it appeared to be fine. Entertainment: The entertainment was definitely lacking. Most comparable resorts have much more to offer in the way of entertainment. Frankly, we found it boring! So, that's it in a nutshell. The location and food are superior while the rooms, maid service, and entertainment are inferior. Will we return? Absolutely not! Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed my stay, but I enjoy myself at most Jamaican resorts. We won't return because there are just too many other properties available to settle for substandard rooms and services. My recommendation would be to consider a different resort.

I stayed at the Sunset Jamauca Grande Resort April 28-May 5, 2013 and it was wonderful. The entire staff from check in , restaurant servers and cooking staff to housekeeping was great. The hotel was clean inside and outside at all times. The food was very good and included American and Jamaican. The food at the specialty reataurants was excellent. I have never met an entire group of people that were so hospitable , warm and friendly and gave the impression that they loved their job and enjoyed serving the public.
