We just returned from an 11 day vacation and had a wonderful time. This was our 5th visit to Cuba and we were not disappointed. The resort is beautiful, our room was spacious and as comfortable as home. If we were in need of anything we only had to ask once and it was provided immediately, ie. extra soap and water. Loved the pools and the lack of a swim up bar was a welcome change from other resorts. My expectations of the food was exceeded. I don’t set the bar high for food in Cuba as I understand the lack of access for some things due to availability. The reason we continue to vacation in Cuba is for the people.....best anywhere! They unfortunately work horrendously long days but are always smiling and happy. We also enjoy being able to walk on the beach and not be harassed by vendors and never have to worry about our safety. The management and staff are fantastic. Yipsys, the resort host went above and beyond on several occasions. One day I wasn’t feeling well and it was the resort doctors day off so Yipsys called the local clinic and spoke with a doctor for me. She offered to arrange for me to get there but I began to feel better and it was not necessary. She also helped us arrange for a driver to take us on a tour which was awesome. The level of talent the Cuban people possess always amazes me. Enjoyed the entertainment very much. The staff try very hard to make sure everyone is having a good time.

Went to the Angsana from March 8 -15th. We love Cuba and have travelled there a number of times, over the past 15 years, to Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria and Holguin. We had a very good time, met lots of great people and have fun playing and relaxing on the beach but we would not return to this location. The Good Hotel Room – Room was spacious, nicely decorated and very clean with functioning a/c, hot water, clean towels and linens and comfortable beds. Our fridge was restocked every day and we had a nice view of the ocean and the hotel pools and surrounding common areas. Hotel Grounds – The hotel was beautifully landscaped and manicured. Very lush and green with plenty of flowers, trees and plant life. The common areas were clean and the furniture was new and modern. The walkways were in very good shape and well lit. Staff – It’s Cuba. The people are great. Staff were very friendly and always courteous and helpful. Staff were the best part of this hotel. The Bad Transportation – Angsana was over 90 minutes from airport to hotel. The bigger issue was the 2 hour wait to leave from the airport after we went through customs, got our luggage and checked in wit our bus. We sat and waited for people to change money, get food, talk to new found plane friends and drink in the parking lot. The cherry on the sundae was the two people who decided to take a cab to the hotel, instead of the bus, and forgot to tell the tour company they were doing this so our bus sat and waited for them for an extra 45 minutes. I totally get that this was not a hotel issue but rather an inconsiderate fellow travellers issue. I would however take the long bus ride, and potential for delays at the airport, into consideration for future travel to this area and would lean towards the 20 minute bus ride in Cayo Coco. Arriving to the hotel almost 4 hours after we got off the plane really sucked. Entertainment – Angsana had some evening entertainment in the lobby bar but it had very limited seating. The hotel was at about 60% occupancy during our stay and you could not find a seat between 8pm and 10pm unless you ate dinner early and parked yourself there at 7. The evening entertainment area is way too small and can not accommodate 50% capacity let alone 70-100%. The Ugly Beach – Angsana beaches are mediocre by Cuban standards. My least favorite of any Cuban beach I have been to by far (Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco - multiple areas and Holguin – Guardalavaca). The beach is short, the sand is not as fine and powdery as other locations in Cuba and there is lots of rocks, coral pieces and shells in it. The much bigger issue is the water. It is very rocky once you get about 20 feet from shore and is not as visually appealing as other Cuban locations (the many shades of blue). Snorkeling and wildlife watching is good but nothing spectacular. Similar snorkeling and wildlife viewing options have been available at every other Cuban destination I have been to. You will find shade if you are there by 9 am but don’t be a second later cause the palapas will be full until late afternoon even though many of them just had towels and no people for very long periods of time. We are beach bums (there from 9-6 each day) and the beach was a big disappointment compared to the other beaches in Cuba we have been to, which are world class. The Angsana beaches are not even close to these. Food – Angsana food was good and bad depending on where you ate. Overall it was the worst food we have experienced in Cuba over the 15 years we have been going there. The lunch BBQ grill and snack bar was good, the a la cartes were okay and the buffet was BAD. BAD BAD BAD and BAD!!! There was VERY limited options, especially in the fruits, vegetables and grains. The much bigger problem was that the food preparation and handling was awful. Every time I ate in the buffet I saw something that would get a restaurant closed down in Canada immediately. My favorite was a cook, using a rag that he was cleaning his cooking station with, to cover his free hand and hold the side of beef down while he cut off a piece of meat. And this happened on more than one occasion. You can’t even make this stuff up. Lol…. People will say “its Cuba” and “shortages”. This was not the issue at Angsana as other hotels in the region were not suffering from the shortages in fruits, vegetables and grains and food preparation and handling is a staff training thing not a Cuban thing. Overall verdict --- We had a great time at Angsana, as we always do in Cuba, but would not return to this hotel. The issues with the beach and the buffet were significant enough that we will spend our vacation dollars elsewhere in Cuba next time we go. Probably back to Cayo Coco.

Just a quick review . Our visit was Feb 13th to 21 . Check in was fast and front desk staff very friendly. Our room was amazing everything you need to just lay your head . Loved the fact our room had a walk in shower rather then a tub. Cuban resort tubs are very tall and can result in some human body damage is to much tequila or rum is around..lol. Eveything worked well in room. Fridge stocked and safe worked. No issues here . The layout of resort is small and simple . Lobby ,pool, beach . They dont have a swin up but didnt notice because butler poolside service was in full swing . Lobby staff was amazing and very friendly . Beaches are great. Loved that there were several different areas to explore . Left is big sandy beach shared with Dhwara hotel . Lots of snorkeling there as well . The middle in front of hotel is coral rock and sand. Amazing to explore walk and solo to just sit and watch The Pelicans fly around and dive for fish. The right side are 2 small private areas of sandy beach and marine life . There is a service bar hut and amazing staff rubbing around serving you . This area is a must for snorkeling . The Buffett snack bar and ala cartes were all top notch. Although consensus says seafood may need to get an overhaul .I must agree . It was ok but not great. They had some sort of mayo sauce all over the shrimp cocktail , need to get rid of that maybe put it on the side . Didnt see alot of seafood type on menu. What we did enjoy of the meal was the last part of our main course. It was breaded fish stuffed with cheese and ham. That was delish. We are here to enjoy and relax from our busy everyday lives . Paint peeling , dust bunnies or pieces of dirt or bugs are not going to ruin the trip. If your looking at those things and dissecting that then something is wrong with you. I wonder what your place looks like ? If you complain about that then those people shouldn't be traveling. Whether you go to Mexico, Turks and Caicos or other higher end resorts they all have little issues . Just because you pay more doesbt mean its better. Dont sweat the small stuff. Overall we loved this resort. Adults only was a treat for us . We have travelled alot over Cuba and Angsana was hands down our favourite so far. We were relaxed and wanted to stay beyond our 7 days . It truly made us want to stay longer. Never felt that way on our trips before. So we enjoyed it so much we are booking To come back in October. Cheers to all .

We stayed at Angsana Santa Maria from March 8-15. The bus ride was a little long at close to 2 hours, but the beer was cheap and the scenery was neat. Not many young couples - mostly 50+ and a ton of Quebecers. The good: The staff at this resort is absolutely amazing. They go out of their way to make your vacation as nice as possible, even when their hands are tied because of poor management or lack of food/supplies. From the servers to the guys at the beach. Thank you! The grounds are well kept and beautiful. The rooms are spacious. There are plenty of chairs by both beaches and pools. Drinks are great. Best pina coladas we’ve ever had. We’ve never enjoyed red wine at an all inclusive resort like we did here. Don’t be fooled, it’s still not like home, but it’s okay. The bad: The resort is brand new and already looking a little rough. Rust in the room, toilet leaking on the floor, broken taps, dirty floors, mouldy shower tiles and caulking and overall poor craftsmanship. The pools were quite cloudy for a few days. I’m not a pool professional but the water levels were too low for infinity pools. Not enough circulation/filtration, and only one jet in each large pool meant standing water. Getting a second bottle of water in the room was like pulling teeth. « We’re not allowed ». Management: let your staff do their job properly! Terrible customer service when it comes to management. Food at both A la cartes was terribly salty. The buffet didn’t have much. A lot of dry/food sitting around. Not much fruit (not a single banana??), no yogurt... The snack bar was great! We ate there all week. The beaches were so-so. We preferred the quiet beach, but swimming is better at the bigger beach. A snorkeler’s paradise though. The room had a dampness to it all week. One day, our sheets smelled like a hockey bag. Did we still make the best of our stay? Absolutely. Will we return? No. If your budget allows paying a little more, do yourself a favour and book a REAL 4.5 star hotel in Mexico.
