    Miss the old Rio Hotel

How the mighty has fallen. Rio used to be one of the hottest spots in Vegas. Yes, it is off the strip but their buffet combined with reasonable room rates were simply the best. Recently stayed and man, how time has changed this place. With the recent rumor of Rio closing down and building a baseball field (really baseball field??) on the lot, the once bustling Rio has fallen behind and it simply shows. The rooms are dated, carpets are old, and the once top-notch buffet with various gelatos are replaced with simple choice of chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Cost cutting does not stop there; a quick walk around the casino floor, you are greeted with constant smoke to your face and accompanied by dated ambiance from 2002. Oh, how I miss thou OLD Rio. Come here, if you are on a budget.

My husband and I stayed overnight in Vegas and chose the Rio due to value, nice place, would stay again! Restaurant was pricey but it is Vegas so that was to be expected. The hotel had everything you would need, casino, pool, restaurants but the pool did close too early.

Everything was good for the most part, except we booked the Masquerade Tower with a strip view and instead got the Ipenema Tower with a horrible view of nothing. We checked in after 10 PM with a baby so we didn’t want to deal with it that night and by the time we were going to say anything it would have been difficult to move all of our stuff with a baby to the room we had originally booked. So that was the only bummer, not having the view we paid for.

    Star Trek Convention

We stayed five nights in this all-suites hotel during a convention. First, the room size was spacious, as was closet, vanity & restroom. Safe & refrigerator were in the room, but no microwave or coffee maker. Convention space was nice, casino was attractive (if you win anything over $100 once, you’re done). There are several food venues, but they are overpriced for quality. Guest room needed maintenance & updates. Our bathroom sink’s cold water fixture didn’t work; thankfully another sink was just outside the bathroom. We could hear music during wee hours of night from casino even though we stayed on the 12th floor. Most of all, housekeeping bangs on the door each morning to see if you want service. Not good if you are a late-nighter like me. It is Vegas, right?! After 2-days of just asking them to empty trash, the housekeeping lady insisted on coming in the room for a room check even though it was obvious I wasn’t dressed and was still trying to sleep.

Customer service was amazing and they let us checkout at a later time just so our kids could swim and I loved that. Our trip to Vegas was cause the kids wanted to see what Vegas was all about and they were amazed with it all especially the strip. Since it was a last minute trip we didn't know we had to make reservations to eat at Gordon Ramsey restaurant so when we walked for 2 miles to the restaurant we couldn't eat there cause on Saturday evenings it reservations only and that was a little sad for our kids. On the good note they got to go swimming the following day before we checked out.
