Like seeing the sad aging decline of a dear family member

To us, the Hyatt Regency means Merida. After so many years, we still sing a "Home sweet Hyatt" tune on the plane and look forward to seeing some of our friends from the staff. The concierge and valet parking guys are amazing and some have been there for 15+ years. They are always friendly and helpful. Inside the hotel, however, things are looking a little sad. The common areas are incredibly dirty. We had a running joke about a piece of thread that was outside the elevator and placed bets on how many days it would take until someone picked it up (5 days!). The carpets are full of pieces of paper and dirt, and many walls are damaged by moisture. Communicating with the front desk staff and servers at the lobby bar was very difficult: in a tourist-heavy area like Paseo de Montejo, they could not understand English. The restaurants were plagued with fruit flies or gnats, and once a hotel first-aid respondent showed up to treat a guest's open foot wound in the restaurant as many tables around them were having breakfast. Accessibility is also a major problem: the gym was under renovation (I think?) and getting there required taking several flights of stairs and a frequently-out-of-service side elevator. The service stairs truly scared me... and there simply was no way to get to the gym if you couldn't take the stairs. The pool was closed for most of our stay, and the lobby staff could not communicate effectively that the hotel had an agreement with the Fiesta Americana and we could have used their pool instead. It took one of the friendly and competent valet parking guys to explain this to us in perfect English. The hotel's location is of course great and there is still much to like about the Hyatt Regency... but it is aging in a sad process.

    Dissapointing Hyatt Regency

Of all the Hyatt hotels in which we have stayed, this is the most dissapointing we've ever been. The Suite we booked had old, stained and worn-out furniture and rugs. Afterwards, we learnt that the Hotel is in the proccess of refurnishing hte Club level Suites. Maybe we were just unlucky engough to get one of the oldest Suites available. The room bathroom was tiny, the shower was inside the bathtub and didn't work too well. We had to let the water out about 20 minutes before it was hot enough to take a decent shower. And even when it was hot, there was a continuos change in the temperature. This was quite irritating. The only reason that refrains me from giving the Hyatt Merida a 1-Star rating is that all the staff is kind and always willing to help. Breakfast at the Club Lounge is not what we are used to have from visiting other Hyatt hotels. The afternoon snacks were a bit better. If you like to have a good breakfast, go to the Restaurant on the lobby. I hope that next time we stay there the Suites are refurnsihed and we'll have a more pleasant stay.

We had a very god stay in the hotel. It started with check in. Even tho we arrive at app midnight, we were greeted very nicely and check in process was very smooth. The front desk had excellent customer service and was very proactive. Our room had a great view on the city, which was beautiful both at night, during the day time and sunrise :) It was big, comfortable and clean. Everything worked well. We had access to the lounge. Service there - very attentive. Food was good for breakfast - a lot of fruit, which I like and variety. It was proper breakfast. Dinner snacks were also good enough. There were salads, pasta and some dessert. What I was missing it more Mexican food - at least some samples of it. Gym was freezing cold. Location of the hotel is very good - close to multiple car rental service (if you wish to rent a car), tourist info office and Paseo Montejo - beautiful way how to get in 20 minutes walking to the city centre. Merida is very safe town. On our second night we were walking from city centre at app 1am back to the hotel and felt very safe. The only small issue we had was after we rented a car, we came to pick up after our luggage from the hotel. We needed to park shortly by the hotel entrance, had to give our keys to the hotel staff working there, which is fine. By the time of our car pick up, we heard them complaining about their job (not appropriate thing to do if there are guests around) and we got a look after giving a tip for bringing the car. The person probably did not like the amount, I considered it quite decent for 1) not having to do it at all, 2) amount of time he spent on it and super short distance he moved it. Also tipping culture is differnt worldwise. In my country we tip only for excellent service and we believe that the employer had to pay their staff well. Other than that, our stay was very pleasant and we would not hesitate to come back.

    Poor quality Hyatt

While well located in the city the hotel is not what I expect from a Hyatt hotel. Firstly the lobby services are very basic apart from the reception for checking in. There is a bell desk/concierge but it didn’t seem to be a very knowledgeable concierge. The lobby floor itself is fine and there is ample sitting space around when waiting for a taxi or relaxing after a day out. We booked a room on the executive floor that had access to the Regency Club (great for relaxing after a long day and for breakfast away from the crowds at the usual breakfast restaurant). However, the Regency Club at this Hyatt is quite a poor version of an executive club as a lot of people seem to use it (maybe the executive club is upsold as an option) and the food options were extremely basic at breakfast as well as at happy hour. Drinks are included in the access so you can grab a beer or a glass of wine. On the basis of our experience, it is better to get a regular room and pay for breakfast separately or included in room rate to dine at the full breakfast restaurant. The rooms are relatively spacious but a bit worse for wear and have poor noise insulation so you hear all the noise from the corridor including slamming doors and noisy neighbours. Also the room doors close very noisily which meant that we kept getting woken up by other guests coming in late - all doors seem to have a very loud lock. The pillows are not very good and even when asked to send some firmer ones we didn’t get what we asked for. The aircon was very loud except at the lowest fan setting - this made for warm nights unless you were willing to put up with the noise. The bed was the right level of firmness which I appreciated. The room just didn’t have the plush feeling that other Hyatt hotels give you. The hotel gym is quite basic but had enough equipment to get a bit of a workout. All in all it was ok but I would not bring expectations of a Hyatt from other cities when staying here.

This is a lovely hotel although a little bit further away from the central historic neighborhood. It took us about 25min to walk to the main square but the streets along the way are really pretty. Overall the food was great and the staff was friendly and polite. We were celebrating a birthday and they were nice enough to send up some free dessert.
