Love Puerta Plata…Iberostar was just OK.

Jen T (Portland, Maine) on Apr 07, 2024

Arrived seamlessly through POP Customs to our pre-arranged transportation to the resort. Check-in went smoothly and we were able to request a room near our friends without any issue. The staff are very friendly and helpful, for the most part. One thing I dislike about AI is the waiting in line to make reservations for the restaurants you are not at all guaranteed to get into. This resort is no different and you’re limited to 3 reservations when staying for 7 days. The reservation desk is open 9am-12pm but unless you get in line by 9am, you will likely not get what you want or will be eating after 8pm. Probably easier process as a party if 2 but otherwise, you’re expected to eat at the buffet. The buffet has many options and you certainly won’t be hungry, but it’s repetitive and the food is only so-so. The staff in the buffet run their butts off and will recognize you if you sit in their section enough. The restaurants are better but not great. The Japanese was the best but similar to any hibachi you’ll get at home. The Mexican was “Eh” and Italian was OK. No steakhouse, surprisingly. We did a nice dinner on the beach which cost extra but the cost was reduced after we sat through a presentation to buy into the Iberostar VIP club. Mercado in concierge was a good guy but we only met him after agreeing to the Iberostar Club presentation. The rooms are dated and basic but kept very clean and the AC works good enough for us. There were some drinks regularly stocked in the fridge and I loved the purified water they had from the various stations they had around the resort rather than relying on a few bottled waters left in a room each day. The bars varied in quality and most drinks were very weak. The booze bottles have got to be watered down! Some bartenders were good, others not so much. Surprisingly, the worst bartenders are at the pool bars. Not sure if there is a reason for this but they could make good money in tips if they were more friendly and attentive. Fermin was not at all friendly and would not acknowledge you until he felt good and ready. Unfortunately, he was at the swim-up bar every day we were there. Elvis was OK and we just started getting out of the pool to get drinks from him. All in all, we had a great time with our friends, as usual, but won’t be back to this resort. The staff were mostly great but the few terrible bartenders by the pool, where we spent a lot of time, ruined it a bit and there were no servers around the pool or beach. The reservation process and limitations were another downside. Also, no room service and they wouldn’t allow you to bring food outside the buffet or snack area to have by the pool, on the beach, to the areas around the lobby where you could sit and listen to music or even to your room. They said it was because of the glass plates but we all know there are alternatives to glass plates.

Just returned from Iberostar Costa Dorada some good and bad things. First the staff is top notch, friendly and ready to help you in whatever way they can. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The food was better than average for an all inclusive and the drinks were decent but varied from bartender to bartender. The downfall of this resort is the terribly out dated rooms. When you book a Premium Tropical View room you expect to see something other than a building 50 feet from your balcony that appeared to be laundry, food prep and ice making facility that was ugly as sin and made so much noise you couldn't sit on the balcony for more than a moment. The rooms were terribly outdated. We were at this resort 15 years ago and the rooms are exactly the same as they were then and they needed updating then. The lighting in the room couldn't be any worse, so dim you can't tell if it's clean or not, maybe that's the point. The worst thing is the smoking. This is 2024 people expect clean air. No matter which common area you were in you were inundated with cigarette and cigar smoke only restaurants smoke free. The resort promoted the sale of cigars and cigarettes by having them on display. There was an upsell on food and liquor items not quite all inclusive. Also your concierge while helpful is really only there to sell you a timeshare disappointing. While there were good parts to our holiday we won't be returning because of the bad parts unfortunately.
