We've been coming to this location for more than 10 years now. We just love Xpu Ha Bay! We enjoy being able to swim right out to the reef and see amazing fish and coral. The snorkeling is great. We can't say enough about the staff. They are all so kind and remember us from year to year. Carlos and Alejandro are the best wait staff you can possibly get. Quetzabel and Catalina are attentive and kind hostesses, as always. We have never had staff a member who we ever had a less than positive experience with. The only complaint we had this time around was the buffet at dinner. More than one night, there seemed to be so many empty dishes and we waited quite some time (more than 10 minutes) for them to refill the dishes. We have NEVER had this issue before in all our years going. There also seemed to be a lot of dishes repeated from the lunch buffet which is uncommon. The grill area back by the bread was unmanned several nights and we tend to find a lot of good dishes back there. We've never known it to be unmanned before. I don't know if they were just short staffed at the evening buffet or what, but we have never noticed these issues before. All the restaurants were good, as usual. We especially enjoy the Mexican and Steakhouse. All in all, a great stay as always. We will be back next year!!

My husband and I spent 4 nights, 5 days at Catalonia Royal Tulum. We had never stayed at an AI resort and this one met all of our criteria: reasonably priced. adults-only, close to excursions, and great beach reviews. We were not disappointed! I booked directly through the CRT website. It offered us free cancellation and was the same deal I was finding on other booking sites. It was peace of mind to have confirmation directly from the resort travelling intentionally! I did choose to book "privileged" based on reviews of the BLoved restaurant and it wasn't too much more. We arrived around noon on Monday and our room (understandably) was not ready yet. Check-in was smooth, bellmen took our bags and we headed off to lunch at BLoved! This restaurant on the beach is great. We particularly loved breakfast and lunch there as dinner was more seafood based and not particularly our favorite. Once we got our room, we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a Jr. Suite. The room was HUGE. Bed was comfy and the bathroom was awesome. Shower was extra large and had great water pressure. The only issue we had was with the AC. It would not cool the first night. We informed the front desk the next morning before our excursion and it was fixed when were were back by 2pm! Housekeeping was great every day and was sure to stock our fridge with snacks and drinks! We did not eat at every restaurant, but we never had a bad meal. Some we loved more than others and service all around was pretty good. We particularly loved the nachos and chips and guac at the snack bar. Our favorite dinner and most attentive service was definitely at the Mexican restaurant. All the employees were working extremely hard at every location. When service wasn't as great it was usually due to lots of guests and very few employees - something they couldn't help! I would point out that Catalonia being a European resort chain does lean more European on guests and food options (not a bad thing!). We enjoyed seeing lots of people from different places and trying foods we don't usually eat in the USA. Just a heads up to other American travelers! There was also some nudity on the beach - another warning to my fellow Americans that aren't used to topless-ness in prude American society! There isn't much activity once the sun goes down other than dinner. We didn't care for the evening "entertainment" shows....which was fine with us, we appreciated a quiet resort and being in bed by 9:30! Finally, the beach. Absolutely stunning beach. Being privileged was nice to have a reserved section of chairs and not have to hunt for one. Beach service for drinks was great. In mid-October, we have virtually no seaweed issues as summer months did. Weather was perfect other than a little windy, so snorkeling was difficult. We didn't spend tons of time at the pool strictly because the beach is just wonderful. Overall, we would happily return to CRT. We loved our first AI experience and had a wonderful trip! Many thanks for the staff that made it special!

If you're reading these comments, you just want to know one thing: "Is this the right resort for my vacation?" Since I've reviewed this hotel once before, I am not going to write a standard review. Instead, I am going to let you know what to expect and what NOT to expect if you stay here. Expect a very clean and comfortable room for the length of your stay. It will be stocked with your basic supplies and you'll return from your adventures each day to clean towels, fresh sheets, full mini-fridge, and some cute towel art animal. It's not fancy or luxurious, but it's very nice. Expect easy access.... This is a small resort, so no matter what building you are in, you will be steps away from everything else. No golf carts needed. The trade off is that you will not have as many restaurant or bar choices as you would in larger hotels. The pool is great, but there is only one. I have been to several resorts in the area, and this one has the best beach, hands down. This is absolutely my favorite thing about this place. If you're a beach person, you will love it. If you're a gym rat like me, it offers a pretty good-size gym and several opportunities to stay active during the day (yoga on the beach, aqua aerobics, etc). Expect to be well taken care of but don't expect to be pampered. Small resort means small staff so they have lots of people to serve. You'll have plenty of food and beverage choices, especially if you upgrade to Privilege. However, don't expect to be wowed by everything you eat and drink. If you don't like it, just order something else. I'm not a foodie by any means so not having gourmet meals on vacation does not bother me in the least. If you are looking for a party atmosphere, this is not the place for you. If you want laid-back and relaxed, it's perfect. Before you choose a resort, you have to decide what kind of experience you want. It's definitely one of my favorites. Our stay was from 10/8-10/15. I was last here in 2011 and I will be back again! Feel free to message me with any questions.

After spending almost a week at this hotel I'm sad that I can't recommend it. The location is beautiful, situated amidst the jungle. The walk to the pool and beach area through a mangrove forest is great. You forget that you're in a hotel at that moment and feel yourself immersed in nature. Since both Playa del Carmen and Tulum are about 30 minutes away, there is not much else in the area, making this an ideal location for some peace and quiet and ultimate relaxation. Adding to this chance of being the ultimate peaceful retreat, this is an adults-only hotel, which means no screaming kids running around the pool or restaurants. Unfortunately, the hotel well compensates for the lack of sources of irritation and frustration by introducing their own. They have these massive speakers with which they announce a new activity almost every hour in the pool area. And not just the announcement, the activity itself mostly involves loud music and constant shouting into the microphone. If you think about retreating to the beach for some quiet time, think again. The activities shift between the beach and pool area, and the hotel staff moves the speakers to face each area, meaning they blast the same message twice. So okay, no peace and quiet at the pool or at the beach. I could live with that as long as I get a good night's sleep, although that in itself would already be 1 star less in the rating in my opinion. But I didn't get a good night's sleep on any of the 6 nights I've spent here. The rooms, while spacious, are really noisy. There is a tv hanging across from the bed. However, the room of the neighbours is mirrored, which means their tv hangs on the opposite side of your wall. And because the walls are so thin, you can hear whatever they have on the tv. On the first night, our neighbours decided to have their tv on until after 04:00 in the morning. To make a long story short, the other nights we were kept awake by noise from machinery outside of our room (might be airconditioning or an old refrigerator, we "solved" this by leaving the air circulation system in the bathroom running, drowning out the other noise. However, this was also quite noisy), by the shows and party in the pool area (we were in building 3, so well away from the pool area, and still you could hear the music and thumping bass until about 02:00 in the morning), again a night with the tv of our neighbours, by people arriving in the middle of the night in their room (we had a couple of elephants in the room above us apparently) and by general (drunk?) people shouting in the middle of the night (and one time even banging on our door at midnight). Due to the pool and beach area also being noisy, I wasn't able to catch-up on sleep much during the daytime. So 1 star less for the noisy rooms. On to the food. It's okay-ish, different kitchens to choose from, but the stomach cramps of the last couple of days (we've only eaten at the hotel) means 1 star less for my review. I also have to mention that sometimes it's difficult to get a table, because you can't make a reservation, and on some of the days we had to wait 30 minutes or more to get into the restaurant. So we walked to another restaurant (some of them are quite far apart) where we also were told to have to wait at least 30 minutes. However, at the reception they didn't do reservations att the restaurants because you could just walk up and have a seat. So we were quite hungry when we went to search for a restaurant, and than 30 minutes before you can get a seat is a long time. So, 1 more star to go to end up with the 2 stars in my review. And that goes to the rude staff at the bars. One time, they went as far as to grab my wife's arm and pull her away while she was refilling her water bottle and pushing her when she wanted to refill again. Without talking to her. They didn't dare to do that to me. There was also no mention to her or to me if refilling your bottle was or wasn't allowed. But in any case: You don't touch my wife. Period. And if that isn't enough, they also invite street vendors twice per week to sell, well... stuff. Which means there are about 10 different stalls with souvenirs and such. While I can appreciate the concept, the execution is terrible. Because these are actual street vendors, they've recreated a bit of 5th avenuea in Playa del Carmen right in the middle of the hotel. In a bad way. Meaning that, while you go to your room or to a restaurant, you have to deal with about 10 different street vendors shouting to look at their wares, blocking your way and even following and chasing you to get you to buy some of their stuff. Since they place these stalls in the middels of the only walkway between your room and the restaurants, you can't avoid them. So there you have it. This could be a great hotel. And maybe for some people looking for loud activities this hotel is great. However, this is also not a "party" hotel, because there is nothing to do in the surrounding area. And the shows the hotel puts up are not that great. For us it's strange that the hotel focuses on catering to people who enjoy loud activities while this could be a great peace and quiet retreat for so many others. Especially with the beautiful location, the great beach (which is still white and sandy and the sea is clear! Sure they remove the seaweed each day, but it doesn't pile up as bad as in Playa del Carmen. You also don't smell the stuff, which was very pungent in Playa del Carmen.) All in all, not recommended.
