The drive from the airport took about 45 minutes. Got to the hotel and it was not a nice check-in, not getting the room we were told we'd get, and a few other things. No complaints about the maid, room was always cleaned. The food at the buffet was always cold. The service at the main bar was very slow, and the drinks seemed watered down. We did enjoy ending our day at the piano bar, always good service. The elevators were always busy, we stayed on the ninth floor. The beach is beautiful.

Please do not think I am one of these people that complain for no reason, I am not. I am used to high end as well as budget holidays. The price we paid for this hotel did not reflect the quality and I am both surprised and appalled at Virgin for recommending it. The cleanliness in the rooms was appalling. The bedding was stained and the coffee cups still bore the lipstick of the previous occupant. The superior garden view we were signed up For was a view overlooking the motorway. The food was always cold, and flies crawled over the salad stuff which was left uncovered. Breakfast was the only hot food we had as we had freshly prepared omelette which were a Saviour. The fruit juices tasted like watered down squash and the coffee like mud. The local drinks were also Disappointing. The wine was not palatable tasting like vinegar. Cocktails tasted like they contained no alcohol at all. Is this why our drinks were bought to the table so We could not see how little if any alcohol was used? Reception staff were rude with lots of eye rolling. We were very polite so did not deserve that response. Cuba is a lovely place but this experience has marred my impression . Most of all I am disgusted at Virgin for selling this as a five star accommodation and recommending it and charging five star prices. I could go on but I will leave it there. Sadly I would not recommend this hotel if you want a cleanliness, palatable food and a decent drink.

really liked that there was just one huge hotel...no long walks to go anywhere....lovely glass elevators inside the building...felt like a real classy hotel...which it is. lovely beach...bit of shortage of shade around the pool...but minor inconvenience...staff always friendly and helpful...would go back

The worst hotel we have personal.ly ever stayed in

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday to Cuba. We had 4 nights staying in Havana, then 10 nights staying at what we were told was a 5 star hotel, This was not a cheap holiday by any means. at a cost of £6700. It cost £2000 more than a 1 month stay touring South Africa late last year. So we had very high hopes for this holiday. The 2nd day of our holiday in Havana, I was mugged in broad daylight 10 yards from our hotel (Parque Central) by a man claiming to be a night security guard at that hotel. Luckily I was unhurt in this incident although I was threatend with violence. I had nearly 200 Cuban Pesos taken. Both my wife and I are disabled and I am pretty sure it makes us targets for criminals,as several peaple had tried obtaining money from us. We travelled to Varadero and arrived at the Hotel at 1.00pm and told our room was not ready and that we should return to reception at 4.00 pm. It was a struggle carrying our hand luggage,Camera Bag and my wifes handbag & water bottles around. All this while useing walking sticks. We duly returned at 4.00 pm and given the Superior Seaview room we had booked Room 502. The room smelled awful with a very powerful damp smell. We were dissapointed with the room especially because of the amount we had paid for the holiday, the bed felt very damp, but worse was the state of the bathroom very tired indeed with loose taps and generally quite grubby but worst of all wass the state the toilst had been left in by the previous occupants I think the nicest way of describing this would be pebbldashed. Luckily we had taken a pack of flushable toilet cleaners. I used over half the pack just getting rid of the previous detritus. I could not let my wife use the toilet in that condition as she had only been out of hospital for less than 1 week and still suffering from the effects of Pneumonia. The floor was not clean and we dare not go bare foot in the room. The first night we retired around 11.30 pm. My wife still being unwell and taking strong medication fell asleep quickly. I could not sleep at all because of the noise from the cooling system despite it being switched off.. It was a loud whirring noise with every 5 or 10 mins a loud bang. At around 1.00 am, I got dressed and went down to reception to tell the lady on the desk, She asked me, what did I think she could do about it at that time of night. She then told me to go back to my room and wait for an engineer, this I did. I did not wish my wife to be awakened up by a loud knock at the door. So I waited near the lift for the Engineer to arrive. I waited until nearly 3.am and still no engineer. So I went back down to Reception and the lady tried to ignore me by looking into her phone and not at me. She again told me to go back to the room and he would be waiting for me. Half an hour later the man turned up listened to the noise and told me it was a normal sound. I asked him if he would sleep with such noise and he said he did not have to and left. The next day I told them I could not sleep in the room and if they would not move us I wanted to be put onto a flight back home. I was eventually told I would be given another room but I would not be able to see it until after 4.00pm. We wasted nearly a day of our holiday through no fault of our own So we moved to room 702 another superior sea view. Again I had to clean the toilet and again the room felt & smelled damp. The hand rails in bathroom were all hanging off the walls, also the shower had been pulled off the wall and just pushed back into place but was swinging around. But crucially the cooling system was silent so we felt we had no option but to accept it. The bed felt damp and nearly every night both or one of us was bitten while asleep. and they were not mosquito bites. The food was just terrible and every meal was a struggle to find anything that was not stewed or stone cold. We have been travelling for many years now but never come across a 5 star hotel so in need of renovation. We were told in our travel documents to check with reception 24 hours prior to departure for a time that our transfer to the airport would be at the hotel . The receptionist I spoke to the morning before we left told me the information in my documents was incorrect she told me they were running a hotel not a travel agency. I told here that if I did not get a transfer time the travel company would not be responsible should we miss our flight. The receptionist told me that it was not their problem. Luckily I tried again at 6.00pm that night and on that occasion was helped to get the information. On the morning of the checkout I went to reception to hand in our door keys. The receptionist asked me for the beach towel document from the hut where towels were distributed. I was given a chit when we booked in for 2 beach towels and they were changed each day for new towels, on the last evening I handed the towels into the hut and as noboby was in the hut and we did not need them any longer I left them on the counter. I was then told that I should have been given a chit to hand to reception I was never told that or I would have waited for the man to return. The hotel then told me I had to pay them 30 cuban Pesos as a fine . She told me I was lucky it should be 60 pesos but they felt sorry for us. If they think I would have wanted to steal their towels they very much mistaken they were old and in many cases pulled and quite threadbare, we have thrown better towels than those at home into the dustbin. I feel it was just another way of obtaining money from us. We felt we had no option but to pay up and just get the hell out of the country. From begining to end a terrible holiday. Finally on the way out of the hotel the lady in charge of the hotel that morning said we hope you had a nice vacation and we hope to see you back in Cuba next year. I think Hell will freeze over before we ever return to that country.
