My wife and I spent New Year at this hotel. The room was beautiful and clean. We loved the swimming pool area. The bar staff were amazingly helpful and so friendly they remembered our names and quickly learned what we were drinking. The entertainment team worked really hard and always had a smile on their face. A big shout out to Yunier, what a lovely young man, his personality matched the sunshine! He made our holiday and is a huge asset to the hotel! It was always a pleasure to chat to him, he was funny, hardworking, helpful and made us smile everyday. The gardeners worked really hard and were always friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. The staff in the restaurant were great and the only staff member who let the hotel down was the lady in the shop who wasn’t very helpful.

I came here at the start of December, thankfully only for one week. I appreciate that Cuba is a poor country, but everything was exceptionally bad. I really was looking forward to sunshine, and really nice a la carte food....please do not expect great things. Expect nothing at all in fact. I was ill for 5 days out of the 7 and so were a lot of other guests (I did report this to TUI as I had to cancel trips as a result) The food was always left out and not handled in a food hygiene safe way at all) because of this, and the poor lack of choice, I couldn’t eat at the buffets at all, the beach bbq had a “paella” which was left in the open unattended for the whole lunch (I did not eat this...I think anyone who did would have been really unwell) getting water seemed to be an issue.... the pools were so cold you couldn’t get in them. Lunch by the pool was a really bad jumbo IKEA hot dog in a bun... (IKEA’s is way better!!) if you wanted cheese for a “burger” (really unsure of what the meat was) it was a grated blue cheese, not sliced cheese. Not nice. Staff were friendly... but please do not waste your money. All of the recent reviews are the same, I always read the reviews prior to going anyway.... and the management from the hotel always say they’ll take things on board and rectify... clearly judging by the recent reviews over the last month, nothing is going to change. I couldn’t wait to return home. Best thing, Pringles in the Cuba airport on way home.
The good...the bad and the ugly

I’m a seasoned traveller and I have been to Cuba 7 times. I know not to come to Cuba for the food, however I have always been able to find something treat. I always stay in “5 star resorts” which realistically are 3-3.5 star. Let’s start with: THE GOOD:Rooms are updated, most hotels in Cuba are old. I can appreciate the modern look. The water/ocean water is clear. Clear water, no sea weed. THE BAD: The resort is quite small, this means, there isn’t a variety in restaurant and places to eat. The buffet is small and the most limited, that I have even been at. No a la carte for breakfast or lunch. The option of 2 a la carte restaurants for dinner. The same two every night. I’ve been to better beaches in Cuba. The two beaches “right side and left side” are quite “shelly”. Yes, one of the beaches the left side, is more accessible then the right side. Mobility issues will have an impact. I cut my feet a couple of times. But as you go deeper you go into the water the sand gets softer. There is also broken glass on/in the sand. Be careful. I have been to better beaches in Veradero. Where the sand is soft. Sand fleas The swimming pool is not heated. Quite cold. Even with the weather being 26-28 degrees, it was too cold to go in. THE UGLY: As I have mentioned I’ve been to Cuba, seven times. The food choices were poor and not cooked well. It was hard for me to find something to eat, and Im glad I packed some snacks from home. Drinks, ar made poorly. I don’t drink alcohol, so a virgin mojito, virgin Pina colada….etc…needs to taste like it…..these were watered down and not ice crushed etc. Bed bugs. I saw one, said to myself…naahhhh I;m sure it’s not and went to sleep. Unfortunately after I got bitten, over 25 bites in one night, it occurred to me to check on trip advisor if this is a common problem ( as if it’s one room, then it’s an issue, as you can transport bed bugs), and it is an issue. When I spoke to some of the other guests, they also were bitten. There were a few guests that had no problems. Unfortunately I did. When I spoke to the local people, working at the hotel, they said it was normal. I couldn’t bare the idea of going back to sleep in the same bed and be bitten again, so I went to front desk, they couldn’t identify what it was, even though I told them they are bed bug bites. They said they would send someone to spray the bed. ( not sure you know what to spray if you don’t know what it is). Whatever the spray was, it did not help. I continued to get bitten. I really did not look forward to going to sleep. However, front desk did call and ask how I was doing, if that accounts for anything. Lastly, drinking water. As I may have mentioned, I do not drink, but I certainly drink alot of water and am quite active. One bottle of water for your whole stay . Everyday I asked for water at front desk and everyday they told me they would send someone. I would ask the bars for a bottle of water and they would say they can’t give it to me. Day 5, I got a very bad headache…from dehydration, I went to front desk the second time and pleaded I needed water…Jose at front desk……finally got me a water bottle. It is absolutely absurd, why water bottles aren’t being refilled in the room refrigerators everyday. You want to keep your guests hydrated. Lastly, this is during covid times, found some of the workers in the buffet/kitchen were laced about their masks indoors. This hotel is a Cuban hotel. It is a Cuban company. It was owned by Oceans but now it is not. There are many locals that stay at the hotel. Ive also felt Cubans are lovely kind people. However, their culture is different from ours or they are tired of serving guests. When staying with the local people, they do not wait in line for their turn. They come and stand in front of you. They take what they want, when they want. Again, not sure if its culture or that they are just tired of serving the tourists. Lots of locals staying at the hotel. Brings a different vibe. Unfortunately, I would not go back to this hotel at all. Do your research, choose your battles. Shout out to NESTOR by the beach bar. He works so hard under that sun, with his mask on, running from guest to guest taking their orders. He runs on the sand, from customer to customer taking drink orders. Then he always makes sure you are good for drinks or if you need more. As a solo traveller, I found him friendly and professional. Some people get overly friendly, in your face and in appropriate.……..and I particularly am not interested. Shout out to Nestor is a hard worker and just amazing.
