I’ve been to Melia Las Dunas several times and this place is by far one of my favourite places to be when I visit Cayo Santa Maria, it feels like my second home. I am always greeted with big hugs and smiles and the staff are lovely. The resort is absolutely beautiful and I love all the hard work the gardeners do to keep this resort so natural and beautiful, I can sit on my balcony for hours looking at all the trees and flowers. The beach is by far the best I’ve ever been too, you can always find a good spot to lay in the sun and relax. I hope to be back again soon once it is safe to do so. I wish everyone at this hotel all the best! Stay safe! Xo

Decent vacations but wouldn't recommend for the cost

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here at the end of February 2020. Our first few days, we had a fairly pleasant experience but towards the end of our 7 days, it started to go downhill. For the many cons, I wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone but there were some highlights that made it still a memorable and relaxing vacation. Pros: The servers at the buffet and staff at the lobby bar were excellent, friendly and attentive (I will note, we tipped almost every interaction). The beach was beautiful and clean. The pool area always had lots of loungers available and was also lovely and clean. The flowers and gardens around the resort were well maintained by the staff who were all friendly. It made for really nice scenery. The entertainment was great, we enjoyed the dancers and the rock band. Cons: Our room bathroom and the bathrooms around the resort were dirty even after our cleaner was in for the day, the plumbing system is terrible (I know, it's Cuba and not much can be done but there was so much clogging and smelly). The bathroom stalls by the pool have no locks on them so you'd have to put your foot against the door to keep it closed. Really hard to get back into a wet swimsuit when you have to use one hand to keep the door closed. We were only given fresh towels once in our room even when we put them in the tub to show they were dirty and needed replacing, the cleaner simply hung them back up and they were musty. I could tell because there was mascara on them. We had no hot water for our last two days. Our room lock was always sticky, very difficult to get in and we had to get several card replacements, maintenance came but couldn't fix it and they weren't able to put us in another room.My husband literally had to body slam the door to get it open every time. There were cockroaches at the buffet and in our room. The a la carts were terrible, some of the food we couldn't even eat and my husband and I both got sick from them. We only went to two and opted not to bother going to the third. The buffet had very limited selection. There was no music at the pool and anywhere there was music, it would cut out or go to static so much it wasn't even worth having it on.

We have now surpassed 30 visits to this resort - and have come to call it ‘the cottage’. There is also a large ‘repeaters’ community, and we’ve made some lifelong friends with other travellers - who we coordinate & travel with - I think that speaks volumes about a place!!! We have also referred many people here - ALL have loved it, and some have become ‘repeaters’ too! I’ve said it before, and will reiterate - the staff are the absolute BEST!!! Now, as a first time visitor, it could be difficult to fully appreciate the same level of connection that we’ve built over the years, so I’ll stick with what I feel may be helpful for someone considering this property for the first time. Having said that, I will encourage you to make an effort to connect with the staff, be kind, be patient. They truly do an incredible job, and despite being treated poorly by some guests, always have a smile. We have come to consider some of these staffers our family, and are so blessed. Ok… so… you wanna go to Las Dunas!??! Location - based on many prior reviews - people seem to miss the memo that all the properties on these keys/cayos are a 1.5 -2hr drive from the airport. Please don’t complain about this in a review when it is CLEARLY noted in package vacay descriptions, and should also be mentioned by your travel agent. During the day, this can serve as a free ‘mini-excursion’ and opportunity to view 3 main communities enroute to the causeway, as well as several smaller developed and farm/countryside areas. Beautiful. Once on the causeway - it’s a stunning vista - turquoise water as far as the eye can see! If you’re coming in after dark, think of it as a chance to decompress after the hustle of the airport and rest up a little more before your big week! Once on the Cayo - Las Dunas is centrally located and is an easy commute to both ‘Pueblo’ tourist shopping areas. Resort Grounds - The resort layout - I encourage you to do a quick google search for a map of the property - as well as locate it on a map satellite view - you’ll know by the shape - it looks like a pair of sunglasses!! Each ‘eye’ is a circular ring of 2 story buildings housing the rooms - and each ring has a pool at the centre - one side for ‘Adults only’ and the other for ‘Family’ and more upbeat activities - both pools have a swim up bar. The family side has a shallow wading pool for little ones. Beach - The beach spans the ENTIRE length of this entire area - and is THE MOST SPECTACULAR THING YOU’VE SEEN!! The photos - while amazing, simply don’t do it justice - THIS is my happy place. It is accessed by 3 different boardwalks - each with a bar - about a 1-2 minute walk over the mangroves, which are environmentally protected and provide an invaluable barrier from most storms. There are quiet areas, as well as great music and dancing, games and aerobics provided by the amazing Animation team. In the centre of the resort - runs the main ‘plaza’ area - which is lined with a’la carte restaurants, 24 hr Beer Garden and Ice Cream shop. This culminates in the main lobby (please see my prior review for an in depth description of this amazing space) and 2 Buffet restos - (only 1 open in lower occupancy) and the incredible lobby bar serving up delicious coffee and all the fancy drinks. The Theatre can also be found here - home to a live show every night, preceded by a ‘kids show’ put on by the younger guests of the resort and the Kids Club staff (they are amazing!!) Rooms - a ‘standard’ room is the size of a Jr. Suite at most other resorts - double closet, bathroom with tub/shower/toilet/bidet and a large counter and mirror. Bedroom area has a seating area and space for luggage to be stored. ‘Premium’ rooms offer a little more space and slightly different layout. All rooms have a generous sized balcony or terrace with 2 chairs and a table, and plenty of space for sunning/relaxing if you choose. We have always had exceptionally clean rooms. We have had challenges a few times with hot water over the years, but most of the time, we’re thankful for a chance to cool down! Food - If you’ve never been to Cuba - you may have noticed there’s a trending conversation around this - you WILL need to adjust your expectations from what you may expect in other holiday areas, and ‘home’. Supply chain is complicated in Cuba - (worth learning about!!) and may sometimes present challenges. Don’t expect to see Heinz ketchup, Kraft Peanut Butter or any familiar brand of soda pop. Instead? Try a Mojito, or Cuba Libre at the bar, and a WAY better than Starbucks cappuccino or latte… ketchup & mustard from Spain, which I prefer over stuff at home! Have a Ham & Cheese panini, some fresh grilled fish, heck, have an omelette or crepe made just for you each morning, and some pasta prepared while you watch. In the a’la cartes, ask your server what they recommend - and you’ll find out which dishes are best that day. You’ve got a’la carte options for lunches as well at each poolside restaurant, and a beautiful grill near the beach, on top of the buffet, which serves up a huge selection. If gourmet food is your most important factor on a vacay - Cuba may not be your destination, however if you are easy going, and willing to try new things, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! We love that this resort never feels too crowded (and if it’s at capacity, we often dine a little later at breakfast and dinner to avoid the rush) There is something for everyone, from total relaxation, to having activities running from morning till the wee hours - One caution is that it is not a ‘party’ resort, nor have we ever felt it was ideal for young singles looking to mingle…. It’s more of a friends & family kind of crowd, with a lively, fun vibe. Never pretentious, and never over the top rowdy. If that sounds like you, then I think you’ll love it!!! Please say hello to our beautiful Cuban family & friends when you go… and have a Mojito for me! We missed our annual spring trip due to Covid - and are optimistically planning our triumphant return this fall!

My wife and i have been to this resort 4 times now. We would have been back a 5th time already if it wasn't for the Corona virus. The staff is fantastic and we have got to know so many of them and appreciate everything they do. As soon as everything opens back up we will be returning. To all the staff at Melia Las Dunas please stay safe during this troublesome time. Hope to see you all again soon.
