Excellent property if not for all of the stray cats.

We chose Couples because of the excellent reviews. Landed at MBJ and were through customs and to the Couples lounge in about 30 minutes. 10 minute wait for our shuttle and away we went. It took about 1.5 hours to get to CN because traffic in Montego Bay was very busy. Upon check in we were taken to our room in bldg. 3. The room was small but clean and well stocked with full bottles of liquor. I would choose a different building if given the choice because bldg 3 is close to the highway and there as quite a bit of road noise. The beach at this resort is one of the best that I have been to, So scenic and peaceful. We ate at all 4 restaurants for dinner. They were all good but nothing that would knock your socks off. Lastly, I would have given this resort a solid 4 stars if not for 1 issue. This was our first visit to a Couples resort. If I had known that the resort was overrun with stray cats I would have chosen someplace else. Anytime you ate outside there were cats at your feet begging for food. We had a ground floor room and we couldn't even sit out on our balcony at night without stray cats bothering us. I am posting a picture from one of the Couples Facebook Fan pages from this week showing that somebody actually let one of the stray cats into their room and onto the bed. I am allergic to cats and I don't like cats and I sure as heck don't want to end up on a bed that has had stray cats on it. If not for the cat issue I would consider returning to Couples but as long as it seems to tolerate stray cats I will not return or recommend it to any of my friends.

This was my first time at Couples Negril. I'm going to start off my review with a few observations that didn't necessarily hinder my experience in any way, but might with others: * The resort doesn't have an elevator. If you have issues with stairs, request a first floor room. And be aware of the kitty cats that roam the place, if you leave your patio door open on the first floor you might get a visitor. * The smell of weed is everywhere - you're in Jamaica and this will be the case at all resorts. If this isn't to your liking maybe Jamaica isn't the place for you. * They have locals who walk the beach trying to sell all kinds of things. They won't approach you on the resort grounds, but will if you are between the water and resort line. I saw plenty of rude tourists. I myself didn't find that to be necessary. I was polite and didn't have an issue talking to anyone. When they tried to sell me something I simply said, thank you but no thank you. We're all human, we're all trying to make a living. No reason to be rude. * The Couples company as a whole (all 4 all-inclusive) have a strict NO TIPPING policy, please see their FAQ page located on the their website for more details. There are certain things included in the all-inclusive that are provided by the resort but are contracted out to other companies (these folks can be tipped): - the shuttle drivers aren't Couples employees and can be tipped - the catamaran sunset cruise aren't Couples employees and can be tipped - the people who give messages on the resort aren't Couples employees can be tipped * During their low season they work on many maintenance things around the resort. For instance, they were repairing the roof over the lobby and staining the decks. Everyday they had a certain deck roped off, so you just had to find a different route. To me not a big deal. I was aware of the maintenance happenings because of other resort reviews I've read. This wasn't a big deal to me, they have to update at some point right? As for my personal experience. My husband I went to Couples Negril for our honeymoon and we weren't disappointed we did. We both thought the food was outstanding, breakfast buffet being our favorite. Don't be afraid to try something new, I had Jamaican sour and sweet SOP. Never heard of it, tried it, loved it. Beach party night was very romantic and fun because you sit at tables with other guests and get to know many people from around the world. Plenty to eat too, the buffet at the beach party was incredible. Lobster night on Friday night was also great, the lobster was cooked to perfection over my linguine noodles They give you water bottles in the room, you can take home as souvenir SCORE! They're trying reduce the use of plastic throughout the resort, I myself love this. They have water stations all over, mainly by the bars, plain water and fruit infused water. The fruit infused water is different each day, it was refreshing and hydrating. Also hit up the veggie bar, they have a different juice everyday. My favorite was pineapple ginger. The bar drinks were also strong and delicious. Never had to wait in a line for a drink. At certain peak times (trivia at the swim up bar or the start of dinner time), we maybe had to wait 5 minutes at most for a drink. The beach flag service is a nice touch. That was little bit of a wait because the beach is huge, and at most I saw 2 employees walking around taking drink orders, so maybe 10-15 minutes tops for a wait time. We never had to wake up early to claim a beach chair because the beach at Couples in huge and plenty of chairs. The cushions serve as your flotation device in the ocean swim area, how cool! There is an AN beach on the resort tucked away, you will see a few unclothed people swimming in the ocean. The water sports area is where we spent most of our time. Byron (hope I spelt that right) talked to us about the nigh snorkel, which is an extra charge of $35pp, but totally worth it. Byron and one other gentleman took us out. It was well worth the extra money. We saw plenty of sea creatures you might not see during the day. We also did the day snorkel where they brought us to the anchor site. We got to see a cannon and anchor from a sunken pirate ship, very neat. We tried our hand at kayaking and the hobie cat. Willy was very helpful to us in the instruction of the hobie cat and he was also the driver of the boat when we did the glass bottom boat tour. He is very friendly and funny! Loved our time with Willy The entertainment staff was very fun, lots of energy! Couples Negril, the people you have staffed on your entertainment team is perfection. The personalities of each person fits that job. Trivia everyday at the pool was so much fun! Best 30 minutes of our day. There are many activates - you wont' be bored. We had an amazing time. If you're thinking of Couples Negril, you can't go wrong. It's a very laid back environment - it's not a party environment. It creates an atmosphere that will rekindle the spark between you and the love of your life. Remember you are going to an island, there is a thing called island time, nothing is terrible fast. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your vacation.

Were here for two weeks, excellent food and drinks, super-friendly staf. Very clean rooms, good bed, bed done multiple times per day also clean towels multiple times per day. Many included water sport activities , just forget the snorkelling, the spot is not worth it. Staff keeps the whole resort super clean and organised loads of activities wether you want to be entertained, play games or do gym and aerobics and circuit training, all is possible and included. Overall absolute recommendation, we choose it based on the reviews and indeed it was as excellent as described, you will get spoiled!! They have many returning guest and we do understand why.

The good, the bad and why we wont be returning anytime soon

We have been going to Couples for 12 years now 120+ nights and am sad to say that although you can chase the nostalgia of the early visits, the last few years it feels like the resort seems to be doing everything they can to keep you from feeling it. The beach is simply beautiful and is kept up extremely well. The AN beach/bar is always delightful and one of the hidden gems on the resort. The staff with longevity (Ivylin, Linden, Sanya, ect) were great as always. It is like coming home to family. For the newer staff, it was painfully obvious that there was tipping occurring because those that tipped were "rewarded" with faster service than those that did not. The "no tipping" policy is not as clear as other resorts. Maintenance continues to be an issue. The deck was being stripped and stained while we were there. Had we not intervened an entire side of the deck would have been closed off for use nearly each day. Also, despite the best efforts of the staff the materials used did make some of us ill. Maintenance like this is best done at night or when the pool is "closed". The pool light was hanging out on the first day we arrived and was not completely fixed a week later. I found myself picking up trash on the grounds because it would be there all day or I would watch staff walk past and do nothing. There were multiple issues with the rooms in our group, broken and malfunctioning hair dryers, toilet seats, safes, ect. All were fixed in a timely manner once we notified staff but nearly every day it was something. Rustic is now just starting to look dilapidated and in major need of repair. Prices continue to rise but this is not reflected in the property. Food was good but not as great as it has been in the past. There were times that the buffet ran out of popular items and when we asked the staff we were told there were no more. Also, can anyone say ‘scrambled egg soup?’ By far the best food was at Lychee (give that chef a raise!) Our biggest issue was the service, they say familiarity breeds contempt, well that is the feeling we got. As repeaters we had already been coming for years so there seemed to be little incentive to keep us coming back. There is clearly not enough staff on site and those there are surly and appear very unhappy. Dinner (and trust me we understand island time) took nearly 3 hours at Cassava one night and 2 ½ at Lychee. There is little to no entertainment as evidenced by the fact that everyone gets excited when music from the aqua size class or trivia comes on. We understand relaxing but this was boring. Room mini bar – just don’t, it was right only one night were there I would say this is a great ‘starter’ resort for those looking to try all-inclusive but frankly for less money you can get a lot more at other resorts. On-site management did a great job speaking directly to us and addressing our concerns but are clearly limited. It is obvious there are cost cutting measures in place effecting the staff, maintenance, facilities, ect. Even the Christmas decorations were the sad and least I have ever seen on the property. We will miss Couples very much and hope to return one day but for now the majority of our group has decided to spend our money elsewhere. I would encourage the owners to listen to the on site management and take guest issues seriously.

We have been going to Couples Negril for 16 years and have amassed about 30 visits and 250+ nights; however, after our most recent stay, we will not be returning to Couples Negril in the future. Over the past 3-5 years, we have seen a gradual decline in the overall buildings/rooms, pool, the friendliness or lack thereof of the 'new' staff, the level of service and the lack of sincerity of the owner and management team to listen and address issues/concerns. There are many other all inclusive resort options out there that offer better quality, variety and more for your money - chose one of those.
