    Charming but inconsistent

Based on a little sleuthing, this property has been around since 1948 and was part of Ocho Rios emergence as a Jamaican tourist destination. It was even part of two 007 movies, though renovations mean one of the rooms featured is no longer in existence. When you wander the property you can literally feel the charm and nostalgia surrounding you. With this as the backdrop, I had higher expectations. Arrival: Very nice driver picked up from the Mobay lounge. Drive was easy and we were the only ones on the van. Check-in was another story. I have a general pet peeve- If I've been asked to enter info online when I reserved the hotel, I shouldn't be expected to fill it out on paper or give it verbally all over again at check in. I was asked to give addresses and flight details all over again, slowing things down when it was already after 9 pm on New Years Eve. There was no one to show us around or given an overview of the property, just a vague "there is a property orientation" and "there is a Couples App". We were taken to our room and our bag unloaded by a very nice man who refused a gratuity. He gave us directions to a restaurant that may be open and the NYE festivities. Room: Layout was great- bedroom, sitting room, large balcony overlooking courtyard and beach. Furniture was pretty beaten up overall. The king sized bed had a lovely topper that made it like sleeping on a firm cloud. The pillows were so overstuffed, I typically skipped the pillow. Our minibar was stocked with only a single ginger ale and wasn't restocked with anything the next day until we called. The bathroom was luxurious in size- we loved the shower and water pressure! Unfortunately, one of the two sinks in the bathroom backed up into the other. Finally, the phone was probably 20 years old and stopped working on our last night and had to be replaced the morning Food: Room service was pleasant and timely. We liked that they would call 5 minutes before they arrived, but unfortunately, that wasn't consistent. I would highly recommend getting the breakfast special of the day. The other restaurants would have been pleasant, had we been able to get in. Even though the resort (and restaurant) were half full, we were turned away because we didn't have a reservation. We were told our only option was room service. When we could get in, food was pleasant but underwhelming for a place with such culinary richness. Very few local ingredients. Why is the jerk chicken not good in Jamaica??? Do yourself a favor and ask your excursion driver to stop for real food. Beach: Honestly, we were exceptionally underwhelmed. The primary beach was kept very clean and tidy, but not only was it small, the sand felt like a lake bottom. The nude beach was like a redneck yacht club, complete with plastic furniture that would remind you of your 80's back yard. It was also complete with a very rocky beach. The Couples App: Utterly useless. It's like someone's 16 year old nephew slapped something together. Save yourself the frustration and go old school- call. In summary, if you get a good deal, adjust your expectations and go. Otherwise, go someplace else with a more consistent experience and a better beach.

Extremely mediocre at best — go somewhere else

I spent 4 nights here with my wife and let me first start by saying I have been to Jamaica several times and love the culture, people, food and beaches. This location has none of these charms. Most staff are nice and helpful. Some are mediocre at best. We were turned away for dinner tonight because we did not make a reservation at the restaurant which was more than half empty. We asked where we could get dinner and the attendant told us to call room service. Secondly the food is extremely mediocre and inconsistent. Some days are better than others but never great. You might manage to have one or two good meals. Finally the beach is extremely lackluster. Hard to sit in it and get comfortable and not much space to swim in. Beach is brown and muddy. The nude beach is rocky and ugly. I honestly don’t understand all the positive reviews. This location is not worth your time or money. Much better options to explore.

    Our Second Visit

This was our second visit to Couples San Souci, the first time being 5 years ago. Overall, the changes due to Covid have been fairly minimal, and didn't make us feel like we got less value for the visit. Here are the major service changes we noticed: the veggie bar near the mineral pool is closed, breakfast at the Palazzina is now a la carte, and some of the restaurants aren't open as many nights as they used to be. While the veggie bar does say that drinks can be ordered at the spa, the spa lobby wasn't always staffed and it didn't seem like a convenient way to order some of the yummy fruit and veggie shakes that are normally available. The biggest disappointment of our visit was the Palazzina restaurant. The breakfast no longer being a buffet was a loss. Moreover, the breakfast service was excruciatingly slow. Every time we ate there it took over 40+ minutes to get our food - which was just eggs and some other "basic" items. I HIGHLY recommend that people just do room service for breakfast - it was timely, had all the same options, and we were able to get our day started. I would also note that we spent a day at Tower Isle, where there is a breakfast buffet, and the service in general was quicker. With all that said, we had an excellent time. The main beach is in excellent shape, and the bar service was fantastic. Food at the Bella Vista was always good and with excellent service, and the dinners we had a Cazanova were also great. Unfortunately, the beach itself at Sunset Beach isn't in great shape, but the company and the drinks there were awesome. I understand that Sunset Beach has been impacted by recent hurricanes. We really love the peace and quiet at San Souci. We spent many days at the Mineral Pool or main beach where things were extremely peaceful. We also took advantage of the visiting tennis pro, who was excellent, and a fun snorkeling excursion. I'd like to thank a few people who made our stay especially great. Vanya was our server on many occasions and was always great, remembering our dietary restrictions. Sheldon and Ramone served up some great drinks and enjoyable conversation. Lastly, Hubert and Raquel went above and beyond finding us the best table at the Bella Vista. Thanks so much to all!

I will give Couples San Souci a 4.7 star. It was almost a perfect vacation. I would say the majority of the staff except maybe a select handful were extremely friendly and accommodating. They were always so happy, nice and ready to be of service. If you walked past any employee, you were quickly asked “if everything was ok and if we were in need of anything” and always with a smile and positive attitude . The rooms were clean and updated. The views were fantastic. The all inclusive resort was just that! 100 percent all inclusive! Food, drinks, activities, and tips! We had a wonderful week here. The wedding was great. They handled everything. (I wish the photos were not so expensive) I only bought 5. We enjoyed all the pools, we did 4 scuba dives, we did a glass bottom boat tour, catamaran tour, snorkeling, wind surfing, wake boarding, paddle boarding, hydro bikes and lazied around by the beach during the days. They have a very no hurry atmosphere that took a little getting use to. Each meal was 5 star cuisine but it took about 1.5-2 hours per meal unless we specifically told them we were in a hurry and they were good to let us know what they could make quickly. Chef Jackson was a total rock star in my book. He made it so my gluten free (allergy) husband didn’t feel left out on all the amazing food. He made him special bread and buns so he could enjoy almost all the same meals everyone had. This to me was the most awesome part. At night they always had a fun activity around the bar (we don’t drink but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the atmosphere and fun activities they had to offer). The person running those bar games during the day and night named Mikhuge, was so entertaining and energetic. They did live music each night as well that was always wonderful. The massages were incredible! (Expensive) but totally Incredible. The beach was a little smaller then we imagined, but most people seem to go to the nude beach so we mostly had the beach to ourselves anyway. Though it was small they took extra care to clean it and rake it each morning so when the waves wash up they didn’t take a bunch of junk into the water where you swim. The grounds were beautiful and very nicely kept. I enjoyed meeting the little parrot behind the B building, his name was Crackers and it was always saying Hello and goodbye every time we pasted. I really could go on and on, Needless to say we plan to return and I would recommend this place to anyone.

My husband and I visit every wedding anniversary. They treat us excellently. I love the food, the relatively untouchèd property with its natural beauty of trees, springs and coves. The restaurants are elegant and the staff great company. Its a place for peace, quiet and bonding if you prefer however, there are entertainment coordinators and night time performances if you are in the mood for excitement. This will always be our go too place :)
