We visited in late April 2021 and had an amazing time. We were able to make reservations at the Brasserie as well as Rodizio with no trouble. The number of reservations you can make depends on the length of your stay. We stayed 4 nights and got to make 2 different reservations. Both meals were outstanding. The other meals we ate at the Hacienda buffet or the Coral Cafe (lunch only) and I enjoyed the flexibility of just showing up whenever you wanted to so there are definitely advantages to the buffet versus a reservation. One thing worth knowing about the main (Hacienda I think it's called) buffet - it's one big room and the music is kind of loud - BUT you can request to eat out on the patio overlooking the ocean and it was amazing. Quieter, too. Once we discovered this, we ate every one of our buffet meals out there and it was so much nicer than in the big, loud room. We loved the buffet food - I'm not sure why there are some negative reviews about it. We left a few dollars on the table each time and I think they appreciated that. I'm not sure what most people do with regards to extra tips since tips are supposed to be included but it seemed the right thing to do. We tipped more at the ala cart restuarants. All the staff wore masks and as far as covid responses go, we felt very safe. Testing was easy and done right downstairs from the lobby, and it took very little time. Well, the swab up the nose was unpleasant, but over quickly enough. Our tests were $35 each although I was told some providers do it for less money but those "sell out" faster and weren't an option for us.. The results were e-mailed later that day. It was not a big deal wearing masks when we entered buildings or putting it on when we went to get food at the buffet. We were free to not wear masks outside where we spent most of our time. If you like to snorkel, I recommend taking your own gear if you can. We saw lots of fish and it was a lot of fun, though no turtle sightings for us. They have gear there that you can check out for an hour at a time, but that is quite a walk from the Palace and it would have been a hassle to check it out from there. If you swim in the ocean, I recommend water shoes or some type of sandals to wear because there are some sharp rocks. The main pool was HUGE and very pretty with bridges, swim up bar, etc..... Biggest pool I've ever swam in and the temperature was just right. They have free towel service, too. There are plenty of lounge chairs at the pool (however the chairs that also overlook the ocean get "taken" quickly) and the beach has lots of palm trees with lounge chairs. In April of 2021 it was very uncrowded, due to Covid I guess, so I loved that. We went to the live show at 9:30 every night we were there. We especially liked the "Broadway" night where they did musical numbers from lots of familiar musicals. There was another show (I think it may have been called Spectacular or something like that) that seemed a lot more rated PG13 in my opinion with lots of skimpy costumes etc... so I don't know that I'd recommend all the shows for families but the Broadway one and the Mexican Fiesta one were more family friendly and a lot of fun... very talented dancers and singers Our room was very nice and they stocked our little fridge with bottled water every day. There was free wifi which I wasn't expecting... not sure if it's free all the time, but it was free for us. I liked that the bracelets opened the rooms at the Palace so you didn't have to keep up with card keys. A small but wonderful convenience that the hotel next door didn't have so definitely a perk to staying at the Palace. There is only one thing I would have done differently... when we checked in, they asked us if we wanted to upgrade to a premium room with pool or ocean view and wanting to save money, I said no, I had figured we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyway. I wish now I had upgraded to an ocean view room. Not only for the view, but also it would have been closer to the beach and probably closer to the building with the restaurants and buffet. This trip was a splurge for us and in retrospect, spending a little more on a beautiful view would have been well worth it. The pool is beautiful during the day and night so a pool view would also be lovely. We didn't mind that a lot of amenities were closed such as the water park, mall, surfrider, go-karts, bowling alley, etc.... I liked that it was quiet and we had excellent service everywhere we went. I would definitely go back.

We took a chance and came here with our two teenagers for spring break. My husband and I had been vaccinated for Covid but our kids had not so safety was a concern for us. I can tell you that they take safety very seriously here and all the staff did such a good job keeping the resort clean and safe. They all wore masks and some also with visors over the masks. There was no issue distancing in the pools or on the beach because the resort is massive! They also had really good spacing between tables at the restaurants. The food and drinks were really good! I honestly do not understand the negative reviews. Just make sure to order the top shelf liquors by name otherwise they will give you the budget stuff by default which isn’t any good. We had no issues getting restaurant reservations and the food and service at the al la cartes was top notch! We had a couple over cooked steaks the first night but after that we learned to be more specific (order rare-medium rare if you want medium rare) they do default to overcooking. Once we figured out how to order we had some really amazing meals! And surprisingly the house wine is totally decent! The pool is massive and was so warm when we were there in April. It was our favorite just to chill in the pool and order delicious drinks from the bar. We have stayed in Akumal in the past so we weren’t super impressed with the snorkeling on site. I think we have just been spoiled by better spots but you can see turtles here. Yes there was stuff closed. We would have liked to check out the big mall, gym, and spa but we also enjoyed the low occupancy. I’m not sure we would have enjoyed it being totally packed to capacity. That is just us. We did do the surf rider and mini golf that was really fun. I can’t speak more highly of the service which was just amazing at every bar and every restaurant. Even just sitting by the pool someone is always ready to offer you a drink. We only went to one show at the Colonial but the acoustics at that theater aren’t great. The singers and dancers were really good so it was a disappointment that we couldn’t hear them better. Covid testing was a breeze to return home and we all stayed healthy. No tummy issues either. I wish the anti maskers we had on the return flight had as much concern for our safety as they did at the Barcelo. Honestly we were treated like royalty there. Thanks for the great stay!!! I can’t wait to come back!!!

Better hotels out there... Don't let Palace deceive you.

Check in took about an hour same as check out. Room smelled like mildew. Buffet was ok. Pool was ok. They only serve Corona on draft. 2 corona cans in fridge and couldn't get it restocked. fridge was about 55 degrees and tried to turn it down but they drilled a cover over the temperature control so you can't change it. AC was 24 c which is about 74 f... was cool but not cold enough plus you have no control over it. They have a motion sensor so if there is no movement the ac goes off... not good. 5 hotels only 2 open and most everything else closed. We stayed here before and it was a lot better but it has gone down hill big time. Won't ever stay here again. Tried to get the AC down and called and got transferred 5 times before I spoke to someone but to no avail. Last time staying here. Good luck if you decide to book this place. We've been to about 20 hotels in the Riviera Maya area and there are so many other nicer ones. Only good thing is the people that work there are very friendly and worked hard...great people! It's managements fault about the other stuff.
