Beautiful resort but will not return due to terrible front desk service
jesssmart (Stratford, Canada) on Mar 19, 2024
After a 14 hour travel day including 6 hours of plane delays and no dinner on plane (because they ran out), our check-in at 1am at the resort was the worst part of our long day. Not a drop of water/drink or snack was provided. There was no food available anywhere on the resort. The front desk associate could not have cared less about our needs. We had requested through our travel agent as well as through several emails that we needed 2 rooms side by side for our family of 4 (2 teens). Of course they had us on different floors...meaning we had to go parent/child, parent/child and all the associate had to say was "It's a small building". So my husband and I did not share a bed the whole trip!! The front desk associate pointed us in the direction of our room...half a mile away and we struggled with our luggage in the sweltering heat...instead of informing us that there is a shuttle. We arrived at our rooms with not a drop of water...it took us a while to find the water dispensers in the hallways and they did not work on our floor. My husband and son wandered around to find water while we had snacks that we thankfully had packed in our luggage... Pros: After the front desk fiasco and the fact that we were not side by side, we had a good time. The resort is stunning, the food is pretty good (some by beach was cold), the entertainment crew were amazing and certainly added to the enjoyment of our holiday. The rooms were clean and spacious. Major cons: -The pool water is warm as a bath and with the heat and high humidity , there was no relief anywhere if you are sensitive to heat. All buffets are open air and rooms are set to 20 degrees. For this reason alone, we would not return because I am prone to heat stroke. -Front desk service was atrocious. I don't get why these massive hotel chains do not understand the importance of customer service. A bad first impression stays with you the whole trip. They should put their entertainment crew at the front desk and would get a lot more return guests. -The prices at the shops at the resort and the shopping centre were outrageous. We had money to spend and refused to pay the insane prices. $200 CDN for swim trunks, $300 for a dress, $32 for a bag of chips, $100 for flip flops! We didn't see a single soul buying anything. I mean, how terrible to try to take advantage of your guests forgetting something or assuming we are so gullible to pay those prices. We paid 12K for our trip for a family of 4 and wanted to do some shopping. If they had reasonable prices, they could be making a fortune as I'm sure many guests are more than happy to shop. This turned us off so much that we will never stay at an Iberostar again. We waited til the airport where prices were reasonable for souvenirs (we knew this from a previous trip to Mexico). -The resort is massive and maps are confusing or outdated. The front desk told us nothing about the shuttle, water, places to eat, etc.. We had to find out through a Facebook page... -Not enough chairs at beach or pool...had to get up at dawn to find 4 chairs. -Food is not always readily available. If you have big eaters (teens), you need to figure it out asap. -We appreciate the glass refillable water bottles in the rooms but when we arrived at 1:30am, they were empty...not cool...it's a basic human need, people, come on! When we did find the water filling station, it was broken! -The beach was beautiful but swimming was not safe for kids. Red flag every day and we were all cut (to bleeding) from rocks by being tossed about in the massive waves that would (and did) take your swimsuit off! -Shuttles were inconsistent and the walk to the buffet/restaurants in the high humidity was brutal. We actually didn't figure out the shuttles til a few days in. In conclusion, if the front desk service was good, we would likely return (maybe in a season when it's not as humid). But the rudeness, disregard, lack of information, lack of care or accommodation was such a turn off, it tainted our whole trip.
Food allergies - beware!
Dvcnewcomer (Niagara Falls, Canada) on Mar 17, 2024
Traveled to the Del Mar in March 2024 with a family of 5 including two boys with a metabolic disorder that requires they do not eat food containing milk ingredients or dairy - trace cross contamination is not an issue for us. We were reassured by looking at YouTube videos of the buffets that food would be labelled with allergens and from reviews that said the staff was attentive and aware. Unfortunately this is not what we experienced. All food was labelled at all buffets, however it was incorrectly labelled. There were desserts listed as vegan that the chef confirmed actually contained butter. Another night there was a dessert listed as containing nuts and not dairy and I double checked and the chef said it did contain milk. There were enough experiences like this that we learned the labels were mostly just made up. This defeats the entire purpose of labelling allergens. We did the best we could but there was no reassurance, especially since many of the workers did not even know what we were asking about. We were given a card to present at the restaurants that said "milk allergy" but when I showed it to the staff, they had to stare very carefully like they had never seen it before and weren't sure what it meant. That's not what I was expecting. For anyone going with dietary restrictions, I hope this is helpful for you.

All the entertainment was great one of the best resorts ive been to would definitely recommend it for any family that is looking for a good place to have kids and a fun time. Food is amazing really a cultural shock for how much food they have provided. Overall great experience!!! Ariadne was great definitely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met
Disappointing Family Vacation
ShirleeHull (Reno, Nevada) on Mar 13, 2024
This was disappointing and very frustrating. Took a family of 13 for my 70th birthday - rented 5 rooms. This place is so big and crowded we could not get into any of the restaurants - all booked up so had to eat in the buffet for nearly every 'all inclusive' meal. So crowded no place to sit or gather by any water. No information at all in the room all on an Ap you had to download and could not see outside - this place is huge - 1/2 mile from lobby to beach and the shuttles are inconsistent so plan on walking - a lot. Front lobby help was horrible - and the concierge just wanted to sell some package. Really just one thing after another that made our stay beyond frustrating - never again. Very few rooms with a view of water and the ocean here is rough - not good for snorkeling or swimming. Sure didn't feel like the Mexico we are accustom to.
