Wonderful stay at Barcelo Solymar/Occidental arenas blancas feb/march 2020

I am very surprised when I read the negative experiences from this hotel. Coming all the way from Norway, my husband and I with our 2 children had an absolutely wonderful 2 week holiday here in february-march 2020. The beach and the water was really amazing, clean and nice. The staff was very friendly. The friendly gardener, who we spoke with the first day of our stay, came every morning with a fresh hibiscus flower to me and my daughter. The maid wrote friendly greetings after leaving the room nice and clean every day, and made beatiful swans and other figures with the towels. The barkeepers were friendly, and especially to our kids as they came to collect lemonade. The pools were nice and clean, and since the Barcelo Solymar is connected to Occidental arenas blancas, we had many pools to choose between - a really big, nice and clean hotel area. Especially one pool was very calm and nice if you wanted to avoid Music. The AC was working well, both in the lobby, buffet resturants and in the rooms. We stayed first in a double room, but found it a bit small for the family and changed for a small amount of money to a bungalow. Nice and clean, and always warm water in the shower, television both on ground floor and first floor in the bungalow. We mostly enjoyed eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at Occidental arenas blancas, who in our opinion had the best buffet. For breakfast, the kids entered the line to get fresh pancakes, and I started the day With a . The food in the buffet was good, but not culinaric, and you could for every meal choose between a great variety of dishes. Even the ice cream was nice, and we had no stomach issues during our stay. The first days there were a lot of young people partying by the main pool, but as there where other pools to use, this was not a problem for us. If you bring children you should water toys etc. from home, as it was very expensive to buy in the hotel shops. We would love to come back one day!
Worst Holiday EVER

Booked with Sunwing Vacations for a 28-day stay at this resort as it was within walking distance to Varadero. First impression was favourable. Impressive lobby and hotel, lovely grounds, pools looked clean and overall property seemed well maintained. Our bungalow was roomy and well located, close to the beach! Unfortunately, our holiday went downhill from there. In summary, used water glasses removed from tables, not washed, just wiped out and returned to tables; cutlery left on tables if they appeared to not be used; empty bottled water bottles refilled from restaurant water supply; cold meat and cheese on unrefrigerated tables for hours; dairy products unrefrigerated; mouldy bread; unsanitary food conditions in restaurants. We had diarrhea for our entire stay at Barcelo Solymar. As we were able to book an earlier flight, we forfeited 2 weeks of our holiday and we’re out of pocket over $1,000. We have travelled extensively, visiting all continents and over 85 countries worldwide. This is the worst holiday we have had. AVOID BARCELO SOLYMAR!!
Never ever ever again!

Undeniably the worse hotel experience of my life. Barcelo Solymar is much more comparable to a torture than to a holiday. It all started by a warm welcoming in their smelly unpleasant hotel lobby. By warm, I mean very warm since air conditioning is to them an unknown human discovery. The check-in line lasted a couple of hours and it felt like being in a jungle; people were pushing, screaming and sweating like animals. If you want to find society’s waste, Barcelo Solymar is the place to stay at. Rude, arrogant, dirty and alcoholics are only some of the adjectives that could be attributed to the hotel guests. In such an uncomfortable environment, the service made it even worse. We had to change four rooms because of water leaking from the ceiling, insects in the toilet and a broken bed. By moving from a room to another on their pee-stinking elevators that often did not even work, we almost had no chance of relaxing. You would then think the food was at least decent since the price you pay includes all inclusive meals— It was not—. I could write a whole essay with respect to the food but I will just stick to one word: REVOLTING. Dog food would probably be more tasty and maybe you would not experience food poisoning like I did. Oh... I almost forgot! One night I came back to a drunk teenager peeing in the hotel lobby. Barcelo Solymar is a party hotel so expect the worse at night and forget about having a good sleep. Now, if this does not sound to you like a torture you tell me what could be worse. Never, ever ever ever ever again!
