    Spur of the Moment Getaway

    We pulled up and were greeted immediately, having the car door opened for us as we stepped out, our luggage whisked away, all we had to do was get ourselves to the front desk. The beautiful lobby did not disappoint with beautiful chandeliers and elegance all around us. The service was impeccable, so much so that we changed our dinner plans and decided to eat at the in house restaurant. Our room was lovely, unfortunately zero view, but that’s ok. Dinner was whole other experience. We expected continued luxury and elegance into the Dining room, but unfortunately the dining room was in complete disconnect from the elegance and history of the rest of the hotel. The decor was tacky, the menu hugely disappointing with very few realistic and real people options. Presentation is so overrated and overpriced. The most expensive fries I’ve ever had. Then to add to the “ambiance” , listening to Gangsters Paradise as you’re trying to have a romantic dinner. What a disappointment to say the least. Zero class and beyond tacky. Someone needs to reclaim the dining room and bring it back to the elegance and class that is Fairmont. Get rid of your overpriced chef and hire one from the Keg.

    We are Accor Platinum members so we chose the Palliser Hotel for a 2 night stay in Calgary. Upon check in we were provided an complimentary upgrade to a deluxe room. We inquired about upgrades for purchase and we were offered the Royal Suite for a great price. The Royal Suite is over 900 sq feet on the 8th floor and includes an additional powder room, living room, dining room, and small kitchenette. This suite was stunning. Service at the hotel was excellent. There is currently no housekeeping service automatically provided due to Covid , however we requested that our room receive service and they obliged. We also requested additional blankets and toiletries which were promptly delivered to our suite. Staff was friendly throughout. On site dining consists of the Hawthorn lounge. We enjoyed breakfast there one morning and cocktails in the lounge both evenings and we were satisfied with the service and ambience. The pool facility at this hotel is very nice. Reservations are required due to capacity limits but we had no problem making reservations with the front desk on short notice. The gold floor lounge is currently not open - when we inquired with management as to when the lounge will reopen they stated they are slated to reopen in April. This is due to decreased demand during Covid pandemic. Due to no fault of the hotel, downtown Calgary is not busy at this time. Overall we highly enjoyed our stay.

    The experience at the Fairmont Palliser was pleasant. You are close to a large variety of restaurants and eventful streets. It was nice to unwind in the Deluxe King room, however it should be noted that at the 10th floor, it seems that it takes a while for the water to get hot - so you might need to let the shower run for a couple of minutes before having a warm shower. The view was decent and it is true that you may be disturbed by the sound of the trains nearby if you have your window cracked open - this however was not a problem for us. It was nice for the staff to give a little bag that had sanitizer, gloves, a sanitizing wipe, and a mask at the front desk. The pool and steam room was clean and functional. The gym had adequate equipment and sanitizing measures, though I would suggest having more spray bottles in the case of having more than 2 people there. I didn't like that the internet was very slow - I believe that it should be a standard to provide excellent wifi for guests. The TV also did not cast (Netflix) properly - it did not work with the multiple devices I had attempted several times having been equipped with knowledge from previous experiences with the software from other hotels. All in all, I think that I would stay at the Fairmont Palliser again, hoping that they would upgrade their internet issue and have their TVs software maintained properly.

    We only stayed one night but it was excellent! The pool and hot tub are very appealing to the eye and very clean. The room had a queen bed and an amazing view of the Calgary tower (at the 10th floor). The bathroom was marble, very clean and detailed. Check in was very easy and fast. Only major downside was no free Wi-Fi.

    We stayed here on the final part of our trip. We stayed at other Fairmonts which were good, but this one, not so much. Hotel is in a great location, but our room had no view (a view of scaffolding, delightful), one of the bedside table lamps didn't work and there were a lot of wires poking out from the sockets by the bed, which didn't look safe or particularly nice. In retrospect, we wished we'd said something at the time as it was a bit of a downer, on what was an otherwise fantastic trip. Love Calgary and hope to come back sometime, but won't be using this Fairmont.
