Pleasant Stay with a Few Issues

We stayed here as a family of three, from March 11-16th out of Toronto, Canada. Myself, my husband and my 13 year old daughter were in attendance. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much, but it wasn’t without a few issues. First, the good: The beach was stunning, clean and had plentiful shade. One of the best we have seen in our travels, and it was the main reason we chose this resort. The ocean and snorkeling were good and we saw many fish right off the beach. One day a 6 piece band came down and played some fantastic music right on the beach. The landscaping was lush and beautiful. Always a hardworking gardener to be found. We found the food average to good. Never went hungry and none of us were sick, which is a huge deal when on vacation. We ate every day in the buffet for breakfast and dinner. Always service with a smile. There were some fantastic pasta sauces with meat, nice breads, and a few fruits. We agree that the layout of the food stations needs to change, as it was difficult to fill your plate while reaching through a line up of people waiting for fresh cooking. We did not wait for the fresh cooking stations as lines were long and the layout was frustrating. We ate lunch at the Galileo snack bar each day. Delicious roasted chicken and great ham and cheese sandwiches. My daughter loved the fries. Condiments were always available. Again, service with a smile, and they were fast. Our third floor room in Block 6 of Luna was ocean view (#6307)and was somewhat dated, but very clean. Beds were adequately comfortable. Our mini fridge kept our water cold, but our AC was only minimally cool. We opened the windows for fresh air instead and enjoyed the ocean breeze. Our maid Miriam always left plenty of water and towel art for us and room was always tidy. Luna pool was nice and quiet for swimming. We enjoyed this quiet part of the hotel away from the party scene, and would have liked some more quiet evening entertainment. The clarinet player who played two nights was quite good. Wish there had been a piano player or a Spanish guitarist too. Our bathroom was very dated, but we had water every day for showers. Not always hot, but at least lukewarm. That, I can put up with, and is not a deal breaker for us. Our main issue was lack of a flushing toilet for the first two and a half days of our stay. The hotel was at full capacity and as such, they were unable to accommodate us with a room change. We put in three calls to various technicians, and through working with our West Jet rep, Mercedes, we finally had the toilet flushing on day three. Up until then, it was unpleasant and inconvenient to be using the toilets in the lobby or behind the snack bar at all hours of the day and night. Snack bar toilets were not always in working condition, (ladies toilet without water, full of feces, and smelly one day, workers there snaking the plumbing outside) and at night some large, creepy cockroaches hung out in the stalls. Soap dispensers often empty. It was a bit of a walk in the night to the nicer washrooms in the Luna lobby, which was not fun. Needless to say, we put up with it because we had to, but would have much rather had a working toilet from day one! That being said, we still enjoyed our stay very much. We are of the mind that a vacation is what you make of it, and are already laughing about our toilet adventures. A big, thankful, Canadian shout out to: Our best bartender, Rubisel, at the Galileo Bar for being so kind and always finding mint for my Mojitos! Smiling Rubiseida in the buffet who greeted me like family, remembering my name after meeting us just one time! Praxaldyis, Sandra, and Paula at the coffee bar for amazing Spanish coffees! Yenis and Daniel, servers in the buffet and Zeina Karina in the Galileo snack bar for their kindness. Robert, from entertainment, for a great excursion to the school and farmers house. Such fun and we learned a lot! Also, thanks to the the lovely older gentleman who secured us our beach chairs each morning, shook our hands and greeted us warmly in Spanish. All these people deserve a raise, and praise for going above and beyond! Would have given a solid four stars or more had it not been for the toilet. Hope those issues will be fixed so we can give a better rating next time. We will return! Kristina and Derrick, Canada

Beautiful lush grounds, wonderful staff, good food and drinks, we would return! Thanks for a great week in paradise :)

We were a group of 6 (age range thirties to early forties) and stayed here March 8-15th. We all had a great time and really enjoyed this hotel. The staff are friendly and aim to please. Tip them from time to time for good service :) The beach was amazing! It was clean, so much room and plenty of trees, as well as some palapas for shade and almost always lots of loungers available. There was no need for us to show up early to save chairs. The water was so clear and perfect for swimming. We brought snorkel gear and experienced some good snorkeling right off the beach. Bring a banana or bread to feed the fish! We were in block 5, which is on the Luna side but right next to the Mares side, and we liked the location as it seemed fairly central. We paid extra for oceanview rooms, we were on the third floor, and the view did not disappoint! The rooms might be considered a bit dated to some but they were on par to my many previous stays in hotels of the same class. We all had great shower pressure and hot water every day, toilet worked great, and lots of storage space. Rooms were cleaned well daily. We got some canned beer for 1 peso each at the store next to the Luna lobby to put in our fridge so we could have one while getting ready for dinner, since our package didn't include this. We were kept stocked with a large bottle of water each day. We might have liked to have a coffee maker in the room. There was a kettle and tea bags. The food was pretty good! We all found several options we liked and filled up each meal. The fried chicken at the 24hour snack bar was quite good! We had all our breakfasts in the main buffet. There was bacon available the second half of our week there. The omelettes were excellent and the woman making them was so sweet, always had a smile and told you to have a good day :) I was excited there was always salt and pepper on the tables and didn't need to bring my own here haha there was ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, a version of Nutella, to name some condiments. The drinks were of good quality and plentiful :) We found there were lots of bars and places to eat. We enjoyed all of the nightly entertainment that took place in the Mares lobby. They set up extra chairs to accommodate more people. There was entertainment 2-3 nights of our week in the theater and unfortunately, we had experienced better on previous trips to other places and didn't stick around to watch. There was some good talent though and maybe some fresh ideas would enhance the potential for better quality shows. Some tips of things to bring are towel clips to secure towels to loungers, bubba/travel mugs for your drinks during the day, pool inflatables to lounge on, pringles/snacks.

I would actually give this place 4.5 stars. Staff, room, grounds, beach, and food great. Yes, the rooms are dated but everything worked and it was very clean. We stayed in room 5210 and was a perfect space for our family of 4. Really enjoyed the Italian restaurant. Would like to see more variety for breakfast but otherwise, a wonderful place. Would definitely go back.
