    Misleading descriptions of ocean view room

    We have stayed at many different Starwood and (now Marriott) properties and have been loyal customers with hundreds of thousands of points collected over time. We couldn’t use any points during the timing of this trip for this property so our expectations were set pretty high considering we had to pay close to $1000 per night for an ocean view room. Upon check in we notified the building assignment for our room was in Hale 5, which was at the back of the resort, and a pretty good distance from the beach. It seemed odd to have an ocean view room so far from the ocean so we asked about it and were told that if the ocean is visible from the BALCONY that it fit the description for ocean view. We were told there was nothing else available but that they would see what they could come up with to meet the expectations that had been set based on their own description. We had no choice but to check in to this room while they tried to sort it out. We opened the door to the room and the views were more disappointing than what I had prepared myself for knowing it wouldn’t be an ocean view room. The room overlooked the main road, a parking lot, various homes and dirt lots. The windows were extremely dirty so looking out them was a sad situation. If we stepped out into the balcony, at the very far edge and looked 90 degrees over our shoulder beyond the power lines and the trees, it was possible to see bits of the ocean in the distance—certainly no views of waves rolling in. Sitting on the balcony, the sounds of passing cars was more noticeable than any ocean waves crashing. If you stay at this resort, consider yourselves warned. The staff were apologetic and recognized that the room descriptions are misleading. They admitted that this occurs frequently. They offered to move me to another room that was supposed to open up the next day but would require me to check out at 10am and recheck in at 4PM! The room would have had the same sad view but was described as being better since it was a little closer to the property amenities and beach. I was surprised that they wouldn’t allow us to stay in our room until the other was available. Unfortunately, that didn’t help my situation. I hope you fare better than I did. I had to do Jedi mind tricks on myself to get over the disappointment. I felt very mislead and very underserved as a longtime member. I would not recommend this place and will never stay here again.

    We own a timeshare villa at Marriott's Waiohai and visit usually every two years. While it is still the best location on the island and has really beautiful grounds and pools, not to mention the best snorkeling in Kauai, it is sadly showing it's age and ware and tear. The tile floors are heavily stained and cracked, the cabinets are dirty and scuffed and it is in need of new furnishings. I know they will be doing some remodeling later in the year but to what extent I don't know. The last remodel they did was not much of an improvement. It is sad for us because we loved coming here. Now we are rethinking our trips here. Unless you are an owner or rent from an owner this resort comes with a huge price tag. I must compliment the staff at Waiohai however, everyone there is so courteous and helpful. They certainly make any stay more pleasant.

    This is the first time we have stayed in a vacation property that is not a resort that includes daily housekeeping and some sort of meal plan. I was worried that it would not feel like we were on vacation if we were doing some of our own cooking and perhaps there wouldn’t be that level of service that we had in the past from other resorts. Nothing could be further from reality. From the moment we arrived it was paradise. Our arrival was well before check-in time but they checked us in and took our bags while we went for some food. The unit we stayed in had two large bedrooms two bathrooms and a large kitchen and living room with availability for eight people comfortably. The staff were good and my wife, daughter and granddaughters enjoyed a few of the activities they provide including yoga and Leigh making. The Honu bar was good. The beach access excellent! I will be returning to this resort again!

    Nice property, but disappointing view

    We recently stayed here for a week in late May for the first time. Nice setup for our 2 bed / 2 bath condo, but it smelled like old fish (assuming this was from the previous occupant). The pools and beach were nice amenities and the bar staff was always attentive and friendly. My biggest complaint would be that I booked an ocean view room. Not expecting oceanfront but more than the parking lot view we got (see photo). I asked the front desk staff about moving to an ocean view room and they said that even if there is a pinch of ocean visible then it is considered ocean view by Marriott. She also shared that priority for rooms is also given to timeshare owners, in addition my Platinum Elite status was not recognized in any way at the property. Marriott should re-evaluate what is considered ocean view at this property. Quite misleading and dishonest in my opinion. Being from the east coast, we hoped to enjoy sitting on the lanai in the morning with coffee watching the ocean, instead we watched the local surfers park and smoke weed. I paid more for what I thought what would be a better view, but ended up with a parking lot. I won’t pay more for a better view in the future.

    Why not stay at Kiahuna instead as beautiful rooms and place but next time will go next door for less little sorry Marriott but 400 a room too much so choose the beautiful Marriott or Kiahuna next door
