It was our 1st visit to this resort/ we’ve holiday in this area several times. As always the staff / the food/ and Mexican hospitality was amazing. I’d read some reviews on the accommodation and upgraded upon arrival and glad of it. It wasn’t cheap to up grade but we spent our 1st night in assigned room NOT GOOD. I wouldn’t have survived it was stark bare need of a better cleaning and paint and perhaps a retrofit. The upgraded room was very nice painted/ clean and had been recently upgraded. I was on top floor and it was bright above the mangrove jungle around the resort. The beach at this resort is amazing very little coral / clean/ great for a good walk and very quiet. As previously mentioned the staff were amazing I’d like to single out one individual VICTORIA/ this young lady always greeted us and our room was always in immaculate condition. Make sure you take a good environmental body spray lots of hungry insects lots of bites. Enjoy

I can only imagine that all of the 4 and 5 star reviews are faked. Staff: 4/5. The staff was very friendly if not helpful. They tried to make the best of a very difficult situation of what looked like under staffing, bad food, and ok facilities. Food: 1/5. This was by far the worst detractor to my entire stay... and we stayed way longer than we should have. I would not serve the food they serve us here to anyone. The meat was dry or mushy. I mean how do you get steak mushy? The quality was subpar on all fronts. If you are looking to get away and your dining experience and meals are important to you, stay away. Room: 3/5. The room was clean, somewhat modern, but not comfortable furnishings. The bed was very hard and bouncy. The bathroom was ok. The cleaning staff would only come to clean our room randomly between 1-5p everyday when we were just getting back from the beach so it made for uncomfortable waiting in wet clothes most days. Drinks: 3/5. Not the best, not the worst. It doesn’t make up for the terrible food. Pool 3/5. It was ok, the pool was adequate but if everyone were to use the pool at the same time it would have been overcrowded. Beach 4/5: this was the only decent part of the resort. The beach was relatively clean not much seaweed, the facility had a few water activities you could book and use. Location 3/5: it’s about an hour or more from the airport depending on traffic. If you want something close to other amenities or activities you might want to look around. Overall 1 or 2/5 stars from me. For all those people rating 4 or 5 stars... I hope they paid you well for compromising your integrity. It certainly doesn’t inform or help the staff fix the concerns.

Nice Vacation but not my favorite

Catalonia Royal Tulum, I want to start off and say it wasn’t my favorite resort but it wasn’t terrible. The pros to the resort are - I really enjoyed the jungle part between the rooms and the beach. I ended up falling in love with the Coati’s that ran around the place. The rooms were standard and they serviced their purpose. The beach is stunning and clean from seaweed. The entertainment at night wasn’t bad, I actually enjoyed myself on the comedy night, water acrobatic, salsa night and one other night where they were lip singing. Lastly, the staff here were friendly and nice. The cons were - the food was not to my liking. The breakfast and lunch were probably my favorite but there is some suggestions I have. For example, the pancakes, crepes and waffles sat out and were soggy. If I was to rate this hotel a 5 star, I would prefer someone cooking them fresh in front of you. Which they had a station for but was never used the 8 days I was there. The food in general at dinner time was average. It lacked seasoning and proteins were overcooked. The Mexican restaurant was my biggest disappointment, it was too over the top and not even close to authentic. For example, I wanted a tamale but this was a tamale that had no meat inside, it had some type of lettuce mixture instead. I will say Tao Cat was by far my favorite restaurant and came to this place often. Last thing that lost a star for me, is they title guests by normal guests, privileged and exclusive. Which in my eyes is a waste of money and is the dumbest thing Catalonia could have done. The only difference is the rooms are slightly nicer, they get 1 extra restaurant, which I saw nobody at, they get an indoor entertainment room that normal guests are not allowed inside unless you pay money and lastly, the beach was divided based on what type of guest you were. In my eyes, I would never pay for it and I think everybody should be equal and enjoy the resort the same!

I have to say the beach is beautiful, the rooms are clean, the butlers are great and the staff are nice. It’s adult’s only and a smaller resort. What won’t bring me back is the food and the services offered. A nominal fee can be charged for privilege. There really isn’t much of a difference between the two. Well, except a membership cost of $10,000US for 10 years. The restaurants close on a rotating basis daily. The quality of the food needs to be much better. I ordered the ribeye at the “steakhouse” restaurant and it came out paper thin. The combination of food in dishes are from Mars. Overdone ceviche, with corn and peanuts? Another fish so tough, I couldn’t cut it with my knife. Anyway, you get the point. Visit after visit, this resort just falls short. Underwhelming and disappointed. Catalonia Royal Bavaro was worse, on all levels. After spending so much money, you’d think they’d look after their members. #fail

A little haven away from the madness of day to day life. The staff were super helpful and always cheery. A great place to relax. Food was god but some of the cocktails were pretty average at best. Beware of the martinis - they are pretty strong!
