3 week visit, the good-food,beach,staff.the bad-some areas of hotel are dated, cappuccinos because they use powdered milk so the foam was lousy not a world class cup of coffee in the morning which is important to me,I stayed at the bella vista in December which is next door and they had world class cappuccinos delicous and a perfect way to start your day,on top of the world feeling, which didnt happen at the palmeras.its close to the golf club (20 minute walk to clubhouse) which was perfect to burn off the fantastic roast beef sandwiches I was eating and the desserts and in house made ice cream which was also fantastic, would I go back? Yes at 800 canadian per week which is what i paid yes at a 1000 per week no (i kept my wristband so the next time I'm in varadero I might pop in for a roast beef sandwich)
Better than expected

First of all, a big caveat. I’m not a fan of all-inclusive hotels and, out of choice, I have limited (mostly poor) experience of them. Although they provide much needed jobs, and a level of business for local supply chains, that’s where their contribution ends. They belong to big companies, and the lion’s share of the turnover is of no benefit to the communities in which they are located. I prefer to travel independently, explore, get out and about, and not be confined to a hotel when I’m spending time in a location. And visiting different restaurants, bars, shops etc each day helps to spread the money around much more. But, the Covid situation in Cuba, and constantly changing conditions on the ground, led me to a week’s stay at Sol Palmeras at the end of my month trip. My destination (Havana) had closed to tourists, as had all the casas, bars and restaurants in Varadero. I feared the worst - a week of organised fun, school dinners and cheap alcohol - so I was pleasantly surprised by what I experienced, although the check-in process was a bit miserable and the information given was virtually non-existent. The food was substantially better than expected, albeit pretty repetitive with varying levels of fresh produce - and most of the à la carte restaurants were closed. The drinks were fairly decent. And, because it was so quiet, there wasn’t the dreaded holiday camp atmosphere! Prior to arriving, I’d already decided to have a lazy beach week - reading, eating, morning runs, gym, sunset drinks etc - as there wasn’t much else on offer in Varadero anyway. So, with this mindset, I enjoyed my week. Would I rush back? No. Am I an all-inclusive convert? No. But it’s clear to see that the Sol Palmeras is an efficiently run, tidy place, and I’d have no hesitation in recommending it to people looking for a decent well priced all-inclusive resort hotel.
We enjoyed our stay

Checkin was quick although overall the reception staff are fairly unhelpful. Our rooms were nice and clean and spacious? Bearing in mind the shortages they did quite well for food choices. Salads were available although sometimes tomatoes were missing or peppers or dressing. Not their fault. The meals were a bit repetitive especially as we don’t eat meat. We loved the Chinese and the italian. Pool was too cold. Plenty to drink but no Diet Coke anywhere. Diet drinks generally hard to come by. Lovely beach. As we got away from England we were happy to be there and felt very safe. Tight restrictions and properly monitored. We enjoyed it and went to the spa too. Was glad we were not in a bungalow which are far from the main hotel.
