How Your Travel Insurance Responds to the January 29 Flight Cancellation Announcement

In light of the January 29 announcement by the Prime Minister that Canada’s main airlines are suspending flights between the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada between Jan 31 and April 30, as well as testing and quarantine measures for passengers of international flights coming into Canada, here’s what you need to know:

COVID-19 Coverage

  • Coverage is not available for costs incurred when quarantined in Canada (regardless of test result). Quarantine that is generally mandated by a government/public authority is excluded.
  • Coverage is not available under the trip interruption benefit, as it only offers coverage when the travel advisory has been changed from a Level 3 (avoid non-essential travel) to a Level 4 (avoid all travel).

Details to come about mandatory arrivals testing and hotel quarantine – please check back often or visit the Government of Canada website.

What's covered?

  • Emergency medical and hospital costs if diagnosed with COVID-19 while travelling outside of Canada for up to a maximum limit of $200,000 CAD per insured person
  • Emergency medical and hospital costs for travellers visiting Canada that are diagnosed with COVID-19 up to the maximum limit of $200,000 CAD per insured person
  • Quarantine accommodation costs if you test positive for COVID-19 on your trip: up to $150 CAD per insured person (or up to $300/day per immediate family), per day to a maximum of 14 days for travel into or out of Canada
  • Ambulance transportation and air evacuation costs related to COVID-19, up to the maximum limit of $200,000 CAD per insured person for travel into or out of Canada
  • COVID-19 repatriation costs in case of death of up to $5,000 CAD per insured person for travel into or out of Canada
  • One-way economy airfare for the return of one travelling companion and dependent children when air evacuated back home for treatment

Who’s eligible?*

  • Travel for up to 21 days will be covered for new round-trip bookings including WestJet Vacations packages
  • New one-way bookings will be eligible for coverage for up to 7 days

  • If you purchased your ticket on a WestJet-operated flight from another airline, even if that airline is a code-share partner airline of WestJet, you will not be eligible for coverage
