My cell phone was robbed at the hotel. The management didn’t allow me to call the police and put the blame on me. They said it was “lost” when I looked through all the public area and never found it. If for some reason you choose this terrible hotel, please be extremely careful.

It is my first day at the resort as I write this review and I already was robbed here. I was at the beach and put my belongings on the hotel's chair. Nearby, three young Cuban looking guys were sitting, drinking and chatting. I left my stuff on the chair and went for a walk on the beach. When I returned, by belongings including beach flip flops were gone. The security guy was hiding in the shade at all times not even attempting to partrol the beach. Disgusting. And they awarded themselves 5 stars.

I'm one of those people who spends weeks poring over reviews about a place I plan to visit, so of course I noticed when quite a few travelers had conflicting reviews about the existence of a shopping plaza/services available on the Grand Muthu resort. I'm here to let you know that there IS a plaza just outside of the resort's gates that houses a few souvenir shops, bowling alley, playground, disco, AND a spa! There is even a hair and nail salon within the Muthu compound, near the lobby. I'll attach a photo for proof as there weren't any on trip advisor back when I was reading reviews. I'm knocking off a star (lump) for the state of the majority of the public bathrooms. Some toilets didn't flush, and some sinks were clogged -- the pool toilet was the worst offender with a constant pungent sewage smell, no toilet paper, no working toilets, and sinks with barely a dribble running out when you turned on the tap. What the reviewers have said about this issue is definitely true. I seriously hope this has been resolved since my visit in July! The bathrooms near the Italian a la carte are clean though. Oh, and the food is great. Yes, there is repetition but it's mostly on the staples (breads, traditional breakfast items, cheeses, etc.) This is a good thing especially, for those who rely on their existence at the buffet (i.e. Kids). And good if you want to eat something you really like more than once! Contrary to popular belief, there ARE, in fact, plenty of condiments available WITHOUT having to beg and plead with your waiter, or bring your own. When we were there, we saw a display of all kinds of sauces including ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, etc. The bottles just didn't look the same as they do in Canada. And not all bottles had English descriptions so just whip out your travel guide/dictionary and translate. Food itself had plenty of salt, if not too much, sometimes. Our mini pharmacy of intestinal disturbance meds we brought went largely unused, but I was still glad we brought it since we had small kids with us. If you're traveling with kids and you don't make it to the kids' club on time for the activities (11am, 3pm, 5pm), you can still use the outdoor splash areas or go into the club house and play with the toys/games. Sometimes they have a sign on the door saying it's closed or a time when they'll be back but if there's NO sign, just walk on in. We did many times and there was no issue. Another kids tip: bring reusable containers to gather food from the buffet. It's perfect for an evening snack, or to take to the beach/Playa Pilar. The rooms were comfortable, fresh smelling and A/C worked very well. It was too chilly at times for us. Our house keeper was very thorough and cleaned properly with actual cleaners (not just water). Xiomara was amazing. She treated us like family and kept our room fresh and clean. Our kids really enjoyed her towel art too ?? The water pressure was great -- let's just say you won't need to exfoliate after using that shower wand. That wand is also perfect for rinsing sand out of all the toys and bathing suits! Magic! The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful -- neat and tidy! In conclusion, I've never doubled back to a destination or a resort yet, but I would book another trip to this resort.

Arrival: We arrived later at night and we were greeted with a couple of the entertainment staff dancing and welcoming us. Check was quick and efficient, however there were only 4 of us. The front desk staff was friendly and welcoming. They drove us and out bags to our rooms, it seemed like it took forever but the resort ends up being really easy to get around. Room: Our room was immaculate, cleaned everyday with fresh towels and towel art on the bed. We had some issues with the room, they wanted to fix these things however we weren’t willing to move and the issues weren’t a deal breaker. They have used wallpaper and some of it in our room was peeling, again this didn’t bother us. Wallpaper and a high humidity area may not be the best idea, but we still loved our room and didn’t want to move. The AC and ceiling fan worked like a charm and kept our room nice and cool. There was a nice shelf and some hooks as soon as you entered the room. There were lots of hangers, some drawers and a small show rack in the closet. Iron, ironing board, two umbrellas, mini fridge, coffee maker and hair dryer were all provided. The hotel shampoo and body wash were nice as well. Beach: AMAZING. Crystal clear warm water, you could see your feet clearly. Very buoyant as well, we never used our floaties and we were able to just lift our legs and float. There are some palapas on the beach for shade, in high season you have to get out early and grab one. I am sure if you tipped one of the guys that gets the chairs he’d save some for you every morning. As we were there in off season we had no issues any time of day. The sand is beautiful and soft, we had no coral or rock on the beach or in the water. There is a small restaurant just down the beach to your right, it has the most amazing lobster and shrimp lunch or supper meal for $18 CUC’s. It was so good we went twice. Pools: There are three pools. There is a small one just outside the lobby, this one is rarely busy as it doesn’t have much shade. The next two pools step down from there. None are connected together, so you have to get out of one to go to the other one and the stones/flooring around the pool gets hot. Shade is at a premium at the pools. We didn’t spend much time in them as we prefer the beach but the two big pools are chest deep and nice and big. The infinity pool is very nice and this is where they had most of the games in the afternoon, and this is where the swim up bar is. The water was a nice temperature where we were there, although I have seen people complain about it being cold – not at all when we were there. People: Some of the loveliest, most attentive staff we have had in a long time in Cuba. They wanted to make your stay as nice as possible and they never had their hand out for a tip. Food: The food that was there was good, there just wasn’t lots of selection. The issues with Venezuela are causing some issues in that sense, but there was always chicken, fish, pork etc. to eat. We didn’t go hungry. Apparently the food is normally fabulous. We went to the Italian restaurant and the food was good, the Hawaiian pizza was really good and the steak was okay. We also went to the Indian restaurant and loved it. The food was FABULOUS. You don’t actually order, they give everyone the same thing – every two people get homemade naan bread, rice, a dish of chick peas in sauce, a dish of chicken in a curry sauce, a dish with fish in curry sauce and lamb in another curry sauce. None of the sauces are spicy and they are all different. I enjoyed everything and would eat there again. We can see how with more variety the food would improve. We didn’t go hungry. The buffet is small so I can see how during high season it can become busy. The restaurant closest to the beach was closed while we were there. The snack bar – had fantastic chicken salad sandwiches, poutine, ham and cheese, tuna sandwiches. Everything we had there was good. Entertainment staff were all amazing. The two Jose's in the main lobby bar - FABULOUS and fun. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, that's what keeps people coming back We will return

Beautiful resort! We arrived fairly late and were greeted by some animation team member with music and dancing. Check in was super fast! We stayed in building 7 which is close to the beach. We were on the ground flood which is a few feet above ground. View was really nice! We could see the ocean and beach. Beds are super comfortable, our maid Lumey is a sweetheart!! We were able to get beach loungers no problem and didn’t even have to get up early for them!! Juan and Victor from the beach bar makes some delicious drinks!! Tato from the lobby bar makes fabulous drinks and Dailenys, Melissa and Lesli are quick to serve you! Suleidy who works the front desk is a sweetheart and is very helpful, thank you! The food from the buffet was good. The Indian and Italian a la cartes are an absolute must and if you can get the Indian restaurant booked twice, I highly recommend it! There is a restaurant on the beach approximately two minutes from the restaurant that is a must as well. For $18 CUC you get two lobster tails, shrimp, deep fried plantains and salad or beans. The meal was to die for, so we went twice! Denise, Ilen, Helen and Jose (Queen) from the animation are wonderful and a lot of fun. Make sure you watch the shows the animation staff put on in the evenings; they work so hard at them. Overall the resort and all the staff are amazing! Thank you to all the staff for making my stay one of the best I’ve had in Cuba! I can’t wait to come back! Thinks you shouldn’t forget: a lot of sunscreen, bug spray, after bite. Pillar Beach is a must! 5 CUCs will get you there and back in an antique car, 2 CUCs will get you a lounger, 10 CUCs will get you a lounger and 3 drinks!!!. The beach is like walking on powdered sugar and the water is beautiful!
