Not Good!

Mark E on Apr 12, 2024

If you wanna spend half your vacation near a washroom then this is the place for you! Got home last night and still can’t venture very far without a washroom nearby. The memories of this place will definitely last a lifetime. Unfortunately most of the people we talked to had the same issues. I will say one good thing and that is they had plenty of staff and all were quite pleasant. This was our 9th trip to Mexico, first time in Ixtapa, and no we’ve never experienced stomach issues like we did here.

Extreme value with a lot of cost!

Lori H on Apr 09, 2024

The resort itself is in a great location and the entire vacation was an extreme value. What did we get for the extreme value you ask? All of the travelers received travelers diarrhea. That's been absolutely no fun. Several have continued sickness from our stay. We got harassed every day by the pool manager. Each day the rule changed for savings seats. They literally removed our towels and argued a rule that they weren't "enforcing" for the people who took our seats. We were asked not to wear a cover up to protect us from the sun while swimming because then everyone would want to wear one. Within 5 minutes of having a speaker by the pool we were made to get rid of the speaker, while literally watching another group jamming to theirs. There are certainly two sets of rules when it comes to this resort, unfortunately. Also, the lifeguards do absolutely nothing to clear the stair ways leading out of the pool. They were filled with kids and older adults who just sat and played like this was an acceptable thing to do in that area. The food was not good, except for the crepes in the morning. Very little fresh anything. Very little imagination. The music at night was extreme. Some mornings until 2 or 3 am. If you wanted a fresh towel in your room......well forget about it. Don't even ask! What did I enjoy you might ask? The people I traveled with and the location......and sadly this was my second trip to this location in 4 years and what a difference the time has made! Will not go back unfortunately as the staff themselves are fantastic.

Lengthy review…

MexicoTraveller2005 (North Bay, Canada) on Apr 09, 2024

Awesome resort and we would go back as was the best of the four we have been to in Ixtapa, except for one thing as in last comment. We just returned from two weeks at the Sunscape. Hyatt has been making many improvements. Resort was beautiful. It was extremely busy as many visitors from Canada, USA and Mexico were on extended spring break/Easter holidays. We were not in any lineups though because we eat all our meals early compared to our guests. However, lounge chairs became an issue for many. We were at our chairs early and never left them for extended periods, just to stroll the beach or have a meal. However many guests saved chairs and did not use them for hours. Security started taking photos of the empty chairs and after an hour removed the belongings. Some guests became really angry but security was pleasant and explained the policy politely. There was never a fear of being charged for removed towels as you did not need a towel card and could exchange them as you required. Any personal items removed were guarded by security. It was a fair process as we watched daily. It was just so busy that it was not fair to leave chairs reserved for hours. Rigoberto was the head of security and we felt he was fair and reasonable, consistent and had good skills to deal with confrontational guests. Beach is beautiful. It was easy to walk in both directions so we enjoyed the daily exercise. We did not like the resort beach cabanas. They were hot if the curtains were down for privacy and the lounge chairs were in sad shape. We are normally “sit on the beach” folks but could not stand sitting there. The Sun Club had better beach chairs but not worth the extra cost. It’s too bad the resort did not extend free use of Sun Club pool and beach areas when it’s such a busy time. Beware that we saw snakes come out of the ocean and a tourist died after a crocodile attack this past December. Crocodiles are a concern in Puerto Vallarta as well…we saw them on the beach there. We enjoyed watching the whales and dolphins in the ocean. There was a triathalon this past weekend so participants were practicing their swim and thankfully no incidents. The resort should post signage reminding guests to turn off showers at the beach as security constantly had to shut them off. Da Mario was our favorite restaurant. Adults only. Italian food. Carpaccio, pear salad, asparagus soup and Pesto Chicken Penne were favourites. Always fresh Parmesan. Staff were amazing especially Francisco, Julio, and Carlos. We also had fun with Julio who conducted a wine tasting session and Carlos who did a Tequila tasting session, both in the garden area. No reservations required for a la Carte restaurants. Breakfast buffet was plentiful. Coffee was amazing there. Fresh orange juice too if you got it from the patio area. Benito was such a great waiter and we wish him all the best when he retires in May. The restaurant near the pool was great for their chicken salad and club house sandwiches! It is a La carte for lunch and dinner but buffet for breakfast. The food truck offered decent burgers and fries but was usually pretty busy. Coffee shop in lobby was great. Open 24 hours. Bar service at the pool area and beach was plentiful. They had Tecate and Indio beer and some brand name Vodkas, Tequilas, etc. and the wines were good too. Entertainment staff were amazing. Great job, Bernice! There are tennis and pickle ball courts, splash pad/mini water park for kids….lots to keep guests entertained. Hotel front desk had terrific staff. Quick check-in and check-out. Money could be exchanged there as well but the exchange rate was poor compared to the Intercam bank across the street. Hotel shops were ridiculously expensive. Our room was basic. Plentiful towels in bathroom, plentiful closet space, excellent cleaning staff, mini fridge stocked daily with bottles of water. I had read earlier reviews so brought a hair dryer but they should really have one available in each room. Air conditioning worked well. Beds were comfy as were the pillows. Four quick elevators to bring you anywhere you need to go. Bell boys were extremely helpful. Lobby bar was great as well as area for airline representatives. One negative comment. A lot of people had gastro issues, even staff. We do not drink much at all, enjoyed the food. We had a prescription for Dukoral before travelling but we both ended up ill. Not sure if it was something with the food? It seemed to be a similar issue with other guests, both young and old. We have been home for three days now and still unwell. Just a note to resort….

The Good; the bad and the ugly

Valerie L (Calgary, Canada) on Apr 07, 2024

Giovani at the beach bar and beach service was fabulous!! All the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the week. We started out having fun here and found pool chairs and beach cabana for one day then it all went down hill. So many people converged on this place it was so Overcrowded, the pool area had no chairs available the pool was disgusting with people at the swim up bar never leaving to use the washrooms ! So many families and kids in the pool it was crazy busy and the pool water looked dirty. It seemed there is two sets of rules one for travellers and no rules for locals Travelling underage kids got kicked out of the swim up bar however local kids and teens were allowed to be in there. Do not eat at the food truck ! It is disgusting fake food. Could not eat it The old save the chair and cabanas with items or towels at 6 am the security just turned a blind eye even if hours and hours went by, Terrible If you go to this hotel make sure you watch the chairs you want after an hour goes by ask security if you can sit there advocate for yourself Also they have a rule about no personal music speakers But again the locals had loud music at the beach chairs security said nothing to them it didn’t bother us but maybe other people just wanted peace and quiet at the beach chairs If you have rules then enforce them Sunscape ! The beach is amazing and we spent every day on the beach. May be a little rough for inexperienced swimmers but you can play in the waves The rooms were okay we left tip everyday to ensure we had clean towels etc the ocean view was beautiful the patio sliding door was no help in keeping the evening music out ! It was so loud we had no sleep for a week. Some nights the music pounded until 2 or 3 am I would not recommend this place if you are not partying until 3 am and want to sleep. We were exhausted from little sleep The buffet food was not good quality We all contacted travellers diarrhea We ate in town at various restaurants even though we paid alot of money for all inclusive Fresh fruit and veggies we’re not abundant. Hard to get a banana finally found one on our last day. Zero mangoes they had pineapples some days The Italian restaurant was just okay food wise but the service was great ! they brought us a wine menu but alas - no wines were available that we wanted so just had house wine. We won’t go back to this hotel we won’t do all inclusive ever again. Westjet needs to reexamine their affiliation to this hotel as well at the Hyatt group in our opinion

Explosive diarrhea for everyone

tiogapass (Los Angeles, California) on Apr 07, 2024

Most of the people in our group got travelers, diarrhea three days after staying at the Sunscape Dorado in Ixtapa. That is exactly the incubation time for E. coli. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Other than that, the hotel was beautiful. That’s kind of like asking “Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?”
