A grand stay at the Occidental Grand Papagayo

In November 2019, I spent a week here, looking for an affordable but decent place to base myself from. The bad news: I didn’t at any time get hot water during my stay. However, having visited CR previously, I’m not convinced that anyone outside San José ever has hot water. Now, the good news. This resort is very nice, beautifully positioned for views, and within a half-hour drive to Liberia. My room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. Air conditioning wasn’t necessary all week (I was told that the first week of November is the perfect time to be here.), and I appreciated a small amenity like a coffee brewer. I was initially concerned about not having enough bottled water supplied in the room but found a water dispenser down the hall. Soft drinks and beer were also supplied upon arrival. Because the sprawling resort is built into a hillside, one can get a great work-out just walking around. For those with mobility issues, one of a number of carts will ferry guests to wherever they want to go. There are rooms to facilitate wheel-chair access, too. The main pool is a nice size and very clean – a smaller pool with bar is closer to the playa. The beach, also accessible to the public, lays to the side of the resort. Kayaking and snorkelling outings are available with a reservation and other activities are offered for a fee. The beach, itself, has ample room for beach-combing although there are rocky outcrops in some places. Swiss Travel is the agency that books tours through the resort. They offer a good variety of excursions at reasonable prices. I used the Palo Verde Boat Tour and the Sunset Catamaran trips, both very enjoyable. If you’re looking for something else, a number of operators assemble on the beach who can help you set up your preferred tour, for instance, birding-watching. For dining, one has a choice of the Buffet restaurant (with set hours), the Snack Bar (open during daylight hours), and with reservations, the Italian or Chinese restaurants. I found the food here to be very good. The modest-sized buffet (compared to some) has well-prepared entrees and accompaniments that lean heavily towards fish, chicken, and rice, but also a variety of veggies, breads, tempting desserts and other staples that change daily. Themed dinners are offered almost nightly and I found many reasons to compliment food services during the week. The Snack Bar features many of the buffet items but also fast foods like pizza and hotdogs, all good. The main bar sits close to the buffet while a comfy patio, between, offers a great view of the resort and ocean. I found the staff to be kind, helpful and attentive; a hat lost outside the resort was returned to me; a lunch was prepared for me to take during an early-morning excursion; and other considerations were made, making my solo visit more home-like. I am especially thankful to Stefanie, Margie and Karen, but was treated with courtesy and a smile by all employees, regardless of their workload. Security is tight at the Papagayo. I went for early-morning walks daily outside the resort and knew that my where-abouts would be accounted for, should anything happen. (Mind you, I never felt unsafe.) There are many pluses to the Occidental Grand Papagayo and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a laid-back, self-pampering retreat in a lovely setting.

We enjoyed our stay. Staff was nice, room was nice and clean. We enjoyed the food. The ocean beach had nice sand but the water was not that crystal clear kind I like. I wish they would of let us checkout the night before as we had a very early flight.

Costa Rica's motto is exactly correct. The Occidental Papagayo delivers "Pure Life" in abundance. From the moment you walk through the reception area, you are treated to the wonderful hospitality of people who truly wish for you to have a great experience. Not enough can be said about the staff and the service they provide to the smallest detail. This shows in the way the facilities and grounds are kept, the immaculate cleanliness in the rooms and dining areas, crystal clear swimming pools, and speedy shuttle service around the resort. The food at the restaurants, buffet, and pool snack bar is prepared not only perfectly, but artistically. Guest rooms are very comfortable and well appointed with plenty of hot water and cold air conditioning! The housekeeping staff assures you of a well deserved great night's sleep. Especially after a superb dinner at the A La Carte restaurants, outstanding vistas of the tropic ocean, late night at the Disco, or a walk along the paths to the beach to catch moonlight on the waves. Don't pass this one up. It's a real gem in paradise!

You get 2 bottled waters daily. If you want more, you'll have to ask and unfortunately more than once. This policy likely contributed to my wife becoming ill as she attempted to drink the indigenous water in the absence of bottled water. They do not have or we most certainly did not have access to Secured WiFi. The staff were incredible, but there was an exception who stood out, the reception personnel who basically said finding bottled water was my problem. If you cannot walk small hills and distances, you will be completely dependent upon the open air cabs; which is to say if you have mobility issues, you should ask more questions before booking. Barcelo.com was very responsive answering our questions prior to booking. After booking, they have yet to reply to our inquiries/grievances.
