After a couple years of more adventurous vacations, my husband and I were eager to return to another Secrets for a relaxing, enjoyable and worry-free escape from the cold. Secrets St. James did not disappoint! Grounds: After our 15-20 minute drive in from the airport (a definite plus compared to other places on the island!) we were immediately wowed by the overall look and presentation of the resort. Seeing as we arrived in the morning, our room was not ready for check in, so we quickly changed and explored the expansive pool and beach offerings. Between St. James and Wild Orchid (both accessible for guests of either resorts), there was no shortage of options for where to post up for the day. Getting a spot by the Entertainment Staff’s hut ensured you would be involved in all of the action going on that day, but there are also plenty of spots around the pool and beach that are a little more tranquil if that is your scene! The beaches were beautiful and featured crystal-clear water. It was different from some other Secrets we have been to in that there was not a seemingly limitless beach to walk back and forth on, but it was enough for a quick taste of salt water before returning to our spot at the pool. The fitness center was much more than you would expect from a resort. It had essentially everything you could want – cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights and more. However, it serves all three resorts (St. James, Wild Orchid and Breathless) and filled up fast, so make sure you get there by 7:30 a.m. if you are a morning exerciser! Rooms: The rooms were in accordance with what we have come to expect from Secrets resorts, maybe even a little larger than others we have been to! Nice king bed, plenty of closet/drawer space for storage and a safe to lock up your valuables. We had an Ocean View room which had an awesome balcony that was the perfect spot to enjoy a Red Stripe from the mini bar! Food: I’ll say this with the caveat that we do not do much fine dining at home, but the meals we had at this resort (and other Secrets we have been to) were amazing! Our personal favorite was the Blue Mountain Grill – our lovely server Stacy convinced us to try some of the more unique Jamaican specialties (Ox Tail and Curry Goat) and they were both DELICIOUS! Chef Lee and his server O’Neil made for an enjoyable Hibachi experience (NOTE: this is the only restaurant that requires a reservation, and it fills up fast, so make it right when you get there!). The breakfast buffet was a phenomenal way to start every day, as it featured a huge assortment of traditional breakfast favorites, fresh fruit, pastries and more. Lastly, our daily lunch was Jerk Chicken from Lothain’s jerk cart – a delicious way to get a taste of Jamaica without having to leave the pool! Drinks: We were more than satisfied with the quality of drinks available and the servers. We experimented with a few of the tropical drinks - Purple Rain and Blue Hawaiian were our favorites! My husband loved the Appleton white rum, as we can get the spiced at home but not the white. Calvin at the St. James pool bar always had a smile on his face, while we had great service from Shareece at the pool a couple days – she quickly memorized our favorite drinks and kept them coming! Entertainment: The biggest question we get from friends and family when we go to an all-inclusive is, “Don’t you get bored?” Absolutely not! Slim Jim and the rest of the entertainment staff made for an excellent experience during the day, organizing fun contests and showing off some of their best dance moves. We utilized the free paddle boards every day – the water was so clear that you could see lots of the wildlife (sting rays, jelly fish, colorful fish, etc.) just by looking down! The water sports area also had plentiful options you could pay for, like boat rides, parasailing, water skiing, etc. There was nightly music in a beautiful setting outside of the piano bar in addition to a couple of special themed parties (silent disco, Jamaican night). Our stay overlapped with the Super Bowl, and in typical Secrests fashion, no expense was spared! They set up three huge projectors and a buffet on the beach which, combined with speedy drink service from Sanjay, made for a very enjoyable viewing experience. Ambiance: While we only left the resort once for a brief excursion, we still felt we got the taste, feel and flavor of Jamaica thanks to the little touches done by the resort. In addition to the daily jerk cart mentioned above, the entertainment team organized a jerk fish cooking class and provided great insight about the Jamaican culture. Local vendors were brought in to give guests the opportunity to purchase their merchandise. And of course, we were never far from some reggae over the speakers! All in all, our stay at Secrets St. James and the island of Jamaica ranks high among our favorite trips taken up to this point!

We are just on our last day with this being our first visit to Jamaica and this hotel. This is a superb establishment and we had a memorable holiday which will be in our memories for a long time. The quality of the food in the eating houses was top drawer with a great choice of establishments. The beach was superb with a clear beautiful sea to swim in. The weather was excellent with 30 degrees every day during our week’s stay Finally the staff were very attentive and friendly and are an asset to the hotel Special mention to Nadine who served us on the beach every day and was very pleasant and friendly. In summary a fantastic hotel and one of which l would recommend to anyone wanting a great place to holiday

My husband and I just returned from a 6 night stay at Secrets, St. James. We are still trying to figure out what people were complaining about in their previous posts. This property is beautiful. The staff is AMAZING. The food is fantastic with so much variety. From breakfast and basically 24 hours a day, if you cannot find something that you like to eat at this resort you are WAY to picky. The variety of restaurants and the evening entertainment are the best I have seen, The pool is huge and there is plenty of room for everyone. The beach is not the largest but is plenty big to accommodate the Secrets guest. They have everything that you need on property. There is no need to leave the property unless you want to. The WIFI signal is great. From the time we walked in the door until the time we left we were treated like royalty. I course you are going to have a few here or there but for 99% of the time service was superb. The pool bartenders and the beach waitresses were there to serve and entertain. You will not be disappointed. The lobby staff was the BEST. They would answer any questions that you had and help out in any way that they could at any time. So if you are contemplating a visit to Jamaica I would definitely go to SECRETS St. James. You will not be disappointed that you did.

Overall Good, Small Changes Could Make It Amazing

We stayed for 3 nights at Secrets St. James and weren't as blown away as we had been at other Secrets locations we have visited. The property is beautiful, the pools were nice, the beach was small but nice, the water was stunning and there are many activities every day. There is also a diving and water sports company onsite, which is very convenient. The St. James Rooms are about a 2-3 minute walk from the Wild Orchid side of the resort which has all the restaurants. We spent most of our time at the Preferred Pool which was quiet and relaxing. The Preferred Pool bartender was so fun and started making our drinks as we walked up. He also let me sample lots of drinks and made some good frozen drinks! Get the dirty banana! We also had incredible and friendly service at the Oceana restaurant for lunch. The food here was also pretty good. The rooms are nice and clean- and I love how they include a steamer, so you don't have to bring your own or iron anything. The minibar is restocked daily, and the cubby where the room service is delivered too is so nice (no need to talk to anyone or feel embarrassed about how many beers you just ordered to your room haha). Go to sister resort Breathless for lunch/drinks/dinner at Altitude! Absolutely beautiful views with a bar, restaurant and an infinity pool where you can quite literally soak in the surroundings :). Some of the negatives which I think could be improved upon: - Service- it was really hit or miss. When it was good, it was GOOD- the team was fun and playful and wanting to make you smile. When it was bad it was awful! Some of the people were just incredibly rude out of nowhere (talking to you Portofino servers). We also had a healthy serving of sass as we checked in at the preferred club on Thursday (2/13) evening which was far from a welcoming first impression. - Food- while it wasn't all bad, I found the breakfast buffet to be a bit limited in comparison to other properties. I also just didn't feel as though most of the restaurants were very good in comparison to other Secrets resorts. - Preferred Club- We were part of this which was really nice for the upgraded liquor, nice rooms, and preferred pool. The negative (for someone in the preferred club, arguably a positive for someone who isn't) was that no one ever asked our room number- or to see our room key. So really, anyone can take advantage of these perks. - AMStar Staff- we had to visit them a couple of times and walked away fairly appalled at the attitude from the staff. Avoid if you can. Book through Island Transfers and Tours- they are awesome! Overall it was a nice stay for a couple of nights. The evening entertainment was fun. They have a variety of activities going on all day and into the evening to keep you as busy as you want to be! The late night Jerk Chicken cart was a nice touch! They have a silent disco and singalong piano bar which was a lot of fun. Please secrets, up the caliber of the food and service- and people won't want to leave.
