Super friendly staff, room was perfect, and pool/beach were great! I wish there was more variety for breakfast. For lunch/dinner, some of it was amazing and some wasn’t the greatest. We waited for reservations for the hibachi restaurant and that was my favorite restaurant.

Secrets Playa Mujeres - Good and Bad

We just completed our week-long stay at Secrets and enjoyed the resort very much, BUT there is a lot of improvement that Secrets can do to improve the guest experience. I'll start with the good. Secrets is located on a private section of beachfront within a security-gates entrance to the high-end hotels (about 10 of them in area - Excellence, Finest, Beloved, Planet Hollywood, Grand Palladium). We walked 2-3 miles on the never-ending stretch of white sand beach every day and the weather was perfect! No locals on beach selling stuff, NONE (because of the gated entrance). Secrets pool area was nice with plenty of chairs for all. You might even get a cabana (free, first come-first serve) if you want to get up at 630am. Bars are plentiful by the pool and beach. The grounds are immaculate and we saw zero bugs/insects the entire week we were there - not even ants - AMAZING! You can walk the 5 minutes to its sister resort DREAMS and eat at any of their restaurants as well. I will say the breakfast at Dreams is way better than Secrets, with much more selection, omelette and taco stations, smoothies, and food selection. Kids are allowed at Dreams, but they were well behaved. For lunch and dinner, the restaurants at Secrets are much better (Maris is OK for lunch at Dreams) - with Oceana serving the best lunch at resort (shrimp tacos are so fresh and tasty and lemon mousse is unreal). Italian restaurant has a decent selection, but tomatoes on Caprese salad were never ripe (we ate there twice). Calamari was tough to chew and not much flavor. They don't have cappucino machine so its plain coffee for dessert (what?). El Patio (Mexican) restaurant is excellent for dinner with a large selection of tasty dishes to choose from. Ivan was an excellent waiter!! Humitsu is good but I have had better Japanese. You can get the same hibachi dinner even if you don't sit at the hibachi tables of 8 (reservations needed for that (and line forms at 2pm for 3pm opening). Guest rooms were large and bed was comfortable. Make sure your A/C works as we had to change rooms on the night of Day 1. The actvities are well-organized and energetic - my compliments to Angel, Pualo and team! Night entertainment was OK - the Italian tenors were excellent as was the Mexican show. Now the bad. Secrets needs to seriously do away with their ridiculous requirement that men wear long pants for dinner when all the other resorts in Playa don't require it (they require golf shorts). The Italian and French restuarants were adamant about enforcing it. It's 80-85 degrees and you would rather have men wear old jeans instead of dress golf shorts - really? The restaurants refuse to sit you inside and you must sit in patio area to dine. Luckily the weather was great every day, but can imagine rainy or really humid nights eliminating that positive. It's an Adults only resort and you're going to have that stringent non-sensical policy in place? The coffee shop, Coco Cafe was OK, but the employees acted like they didn't want to be there (except for Itel who was very nice), especially the night shift lady who was closing up shop at 9:30 when it was open until 11pm and wouldn't serve you anything but iced or regular coffee with a frown to boot. Secrets has zero ice cream at the coffee shop, and only a few restaurants offer it for dessert. Why? Do they think adults don't like ice cream. You have to walk over to Dreams to get ice cream, but the selection was flavorless and their smoothies were like drinking coffee milk. The Spa was average at best, but there prices, almost $300 w/ tip for a massage, were outrageous (I'm sure the masseues don't get the majority of that money). You can do the time share preso to get $200 off, but not worth your 3 hrs of time. The bars at Secrets serves bottom shelf brands. You can ask for Don Julio or Baileys and they give you the cheapest brand they can find in Mexico. Beware. The bars also have no smoothie machines (unlike Excellence or Finest or PH), so a frozen marghartita or pina colada or ice cream smoothie is out of the question. Instead you get a drink with uncrushed ice in it. Secrets does a lot of things very well, but going cheap or not having smoothie machines or cappucino machines or using bottom shelf liquor just cheapens the overall quality of the resort. Secrets you can do better in those areas!

Rooms are 80+ degrees and there’s nothing they can or will do about it

81 degrees in our room, the AC and fan aren’t working. Don’t stay at this resort. We’ve heard no more times than I’m used to with resort stays and we’ve had to change our room due to high temperatures and the move only made it worse. Lots of better options with better service. The food is cafeteria level and there are limited lunch and breakfast options. Not worth the money.

My wife and I stayed at this resort to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We could not be more pleased with our stay. The entire property is spotless. The food and drinks were good, and the beach and pool areas are very well maintained. But what really made our stay enjoyable was the entire staff. EVERONE was cheerful and friendly! No matter what we asked for, the staff went out of their way to accommodate our request. We requested two special meals for our anniversary, an in room breakfast and a private beach side dinner. Both experiences were excellent, as the servers went out of their way to make the events special. The food for our private dinner was the best meal we had during the entire trip. We paid for the Preferred Club experience and we recommend that choice for the access to the beachside cabanas. Relaxing on a comfortable mattress under the shade of a thach roof with food and beverage service was worth the extra cost for us. Our ocean view room had an amazing view of the pool and the beach. It was nice to sit on the balcony in the ocean breeze and take it all in. We had a wonderful experience. We can't wait to go back.

The only thing "preferred" as a Preferred Club guest was Himitsu

We stayed at Secrets Playa Mujeres the first week of April and upgraded to Preferred Club guest level. We were not impressed by anything offered as preferred member guests--in fact we felt ignored or that we were bothering that particular staff. Luckily we found David, one of the poolside concierges, who helped us set up cabana beds for the week (again, this was an extra we paid for that normally would have been part of being preferred guests at other resorts). He and Marlene were wonderful checking in on the 4 of us poolside; their personalities adding to the fun of our day. We loved the view at Oceana and visited that restaurant quite a few times, trying out breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The breakfast buffet was also tasty and had a lot to chose from. Aside from the pool and view, the BEST part of the trip would have to be the Japanese restaurant, Himitsu. We had such a good experience and food was so delicious, that we ended up going there a second night--this time so we could sit at the hibachi table. (Yes, go wait in line in the afternoon so you can sit at a hibachi table.) Jacinto, the manager, was so accommodating! This restaurant was so well run and well staffed, from the hostess to the waiters to the chefs! Our waiters Samuel and Melchor were so attentive. Samuel gave excellent sushi recommendations and Melchor kept the drinks coming. Josue was the sushi chef and his rolls and sashimi were delicious--fresh fish! And then Gustavo...the best hibachi chef tricks we've seen from Cancun to Chicago! He was so funny and entertaining and the food was delicious (hence why we went back a second time)! It was so cute, too that the staff we encountered the previous night remembered us the next night! It felt like coming home to a familiar place!
