We have been at this resort 23 times since January 2015... and over the past year it has deteriated so much that we will not be returning anytime soon. One server in the front lobby called Yuleimi, she served our friends milky colored water in dirty glasses and when approached about this she said that is the way it is supposed to be. When we called her back to our table she said ... "what do you want?" that was in April and the management solution to this problem was to promote her to the manager of the lobby bar. Now that was a slap in the face. The resort on the whole is very dirty with cow patties on the walk ways that were not cleaned up. We had to stomp on cockroaches in the buffet and watch that there was none on our table... but they were running around be bread station and through the bread. The only soda on the resort was cola and none delived in the rooms not unless we complained. We will not recommend this resort to anyone until a major overhaul is done. The staff at the resort is amazing, except for Yuleimi and they replaced several amazing servers with her. It saddens me not to be going back to this resort.

Our week in Melia Jardines Del Rey was great if you consider the fact that you pay less than $1000 CAD. Food Food was pretty good, buffet changed every day and was better than expected, (chef who makes the omelettes is the best!!!) The A la carte dinners were the least impressive of the meals and the biggest disappointment than anything else on the trip. The First one we had was Italian which was pretty much the same pasta served at the beach buffet except it took 2 and a half hours for us to be finished our meal. The Mediterranean was the other dinner we had and some of the food served was not cooked and it wasn’t even worth it to send it back. Service was also not good but not a big deal when you consider there are buffets where you can serve yourself. Also the drinks were not watered down but limited in the sense that you can’t order whatever fancy drink you wanted. 2.5/5 Accommodations Room was okay. Very cold but needed after a long day in the baking sun. I would recommend bringing strong cold medicine because the drastic temperature changes made our throats hurt. Maids did an okay job. Sometimes they didn’t leave coffee if we didn’t tip. (Write down on a notepad or something if you want coffee) 3/5 Services/People 5/5 Some of the staff didn’t care for us but some went out of their way to make us happy. #1 Joel. Unbelievable person all around. He was working the beach bar and had our drinks ready for us the moment he saw us walking down the path to the beach. He even took care of us during the lunch buffet while he was running around in the blistering sun running the bar and helping with the buffet. He is an exceptional person and we were so thankful for him. #2 Miguel. He works one of the pool bars and he does his job well. Extremely kind and another exceptional person who went out of his way to make us feel welcomed and give us nicknames! #3. joslay/yoslay the gardener. We met him near the end of our trip but we saw him multiple times on the trip and he would always ask how we were in passing and if we were enjoying our stay. He Was another great person devoted to making our stay better. IMPORTANT>>>>>> To conclude, i Would gladly come back just to see the individuals who made our stay special and to them I would like to say thank you. And if you are reading this and considering going to Cuba I would urge you to bring some clothes you may not need or want anymore because the Cuban workers on resorts like this slave away to make you happy but they don’t get paid nearly what they should for how hard they work and even something as cheap and simple as a t-shirt or pants is difficult to obtain for them. Thanks so much to all of the staff that made our trip special - Boo-Boo

Worst Cuba vacation of my life!Do Not waste your money coming here!

Been to Cuba 8 times in the past 6 years. First trip to Cayo Coco, thought we’d try something new and it was absolutely horrible! Have patronized Melia in Cayo Santa Maria and it was fabulous however Melia Jardines Del Rey on Cayo Coco is a HUGE disappointment! The Melia group should be ashamed to have this “resort” under its umbrella. Pros •the beach is lovely (thanks to Mother Nature and not the resort) • snack bar has the only edible food on resort fries and chicken sandwich were palatable •leaving to come home was a highlight Cons •Resort is rundown (even by Cuban standards) • broken toilet in room upon arrival, called front desk to report it and they didn’t do anything to fix it, in fact it was only fixed after we complained to our maid and she called front desk to speak to someone about it. It was determined the toilet was u able to be fixed and we were moved to another room (could’ve been avoided if they followed up when I called the first time) •bedding and sheets were stained and discoloured •all staff including management (and there was a lot of management walking around doing nothing all day with their walkie talkies) are completely disengaged and have no interest in working in the hospitality industry - groups of staff standing around and not serving customers •told the resort it was our wedding anniversary, spoke to person at customer service, front desk and the a la carte and they couldn’t have cared less about it. We were willing to pay for a nice dinner on the beach but nothing would be done for us! • still water pools all over the resort and this leads to a huge mosquito epidemic...in all our years travelling to Cuba we have never encountered mosquitos like at this resort and on Cayo Coco • food is absolutely disgusting (even by Cuban standards) Cross contamination at every food prep station. Husband got a piece of undercooked chicken at the beach grill (cut into it and it was completely pink/raw inside) • pieces of plastic found inside a cooked crepe from the breakfast buffet • NO BOTTLED WATER AVAILABLE ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 13!!! Had to beg for bottled water, go to customer service and finally a manager brought me one bottle...it was 35 degrees outside that day!!!! STAYING AT THE MELIA JARDINES DEL REY IS WORST VACATION DECISION OF OUR LIVES! EVEN IF WE WERE OFFERED A FREE STAY WE WOULD REFUSE! Do yourself a favour and go to Cayo Santa Maria. All resorts have great service, food & drink and beaches!

Traveled in July for 10 days with family of five - adjoining rooms for our three teens. bus ride in and check in was smooth. We didn't sweat the small stuff...but there were a few irritants. tv cable wire needed to be changed as it was defective (we asked for service) telephones didn't work throughout the trip despite being signaled for service safe battery needed to be changed once water was not restocked one of the days (we signaled for service) when locals vacationed there over a few days, their customs are different from north american - piling high food on plates and cutting lines to take massive amounts of food - not cool missing toilet paper is many pubic washrooms one questionable thing that happened was money exchange at front desk. we realized that we had $100 less than we should have received and we went back at night to signal this. they said the computer system was down and we had to wait to speak with manager the next day. we stressed about this as exchanging money at front desk might have become a he said she said situation. in the end, we were pleased there was $100 waiting for us the next day so i suppose all was made right but it left a doubt about whether or not this was a mistake or planned. one side of pools closed due to low capacity. pool was clean throughout our stay except for two of the days. saw one tourist actually rinse a dish in the pool - seriously what is wrong with people?? snack bar had some restrictions as to when pizza was available. a la carte is nice for the decor and food is just ok buffet food is varied and ok loved y espresso at the var in the morning loved the service from waitresses and bar persons fun day trips to different sister resorts fun activity day at the rope course near one of the sister resorts foam party at night was cool playing pool offsite was affordable but trying to get a table was sometimes a challenge churros on some evenings. yum! mosquitoes were hungry. bring repellant. had a beach dinner as repeat guests and it was a nice touch. loved the beach and walking the beach. plenty of palapas. took pedal boat out once. played tennis once but it surely was a sweaty endeavor! cleaning staff did a good job in our rooms. All in all MJD is a beautiful resort (esp the lobby) and we had a relaxing vacation - just what we were looking for.
