Okay, first of all, we stayed at a total of three resorts by end of our vacation. The first place (Papakea) was a nightmare so we stayed at two other places after that accommodated us last minute. THIS PLACE WAS AWESOME. It had a super relaxed and friendly atmosphere, despite being during COVID. They kept to all the COVID regulations, had hand sanitizer and social distancing markers, but there was no rudeness or harassing of the guests. A true sense of "aloha" and kindness from everyone who worked there. It felt like a resort and true vacation, even though we were there during COVID. The restaurant was not open when we were there, but I hear it is now. The grounds have tiki torches which give it a very nice atmosphere in the evening. People come casually in and off the beautiful beach. We left the pool just in time to enjoy the most epic sunset we've ever seen in our lives and then came back washed in the very convenient showers and then hoped in the spas to enjoy the stars. My family loved the vibe. Everyone was friendly, the guest the employees, literally everyone was so inviting and friendly. I felt welcomed "home" every night we returned to the hotel. The first place we stayed made people walk around with cards and would come up to you on the way to your room (even while holding two bags of groceries) ask for your little orange room card like they were the police. It was freaky and miserable. I couldn't be more grateful to Honua Kai for treating their guests like GUESTS, instead of inmates. What super contrast to our first Maui experience. Also, we got to know some of the employees on our short stay and they did little kindnesses like let our kids go down the slide a few more times after posted time for close, and one employee gave me a gardenia when I mentioned it was my favorite flower. I can't say enough how much a felt like the guest at a friend's home here. It was amazing! There are also cats at the nearby park that have been fixed and have their shots (their ears are clipped so you know) the live-in residents keep a little house and clean water for them. My kids went nuts for the cats and a very kind resident shared their cat food so my children could feed them. I have the cutest pictures of that at sunset. Thank you to everyone at Honua Kai. My family will never forget this magical stay.

The hotel is nice and the grounds are awesome. We were a little disappointed to find as much construction (I’m about a year late reviewing this) there as we did that we weren’t made aware of. Once the construction is done it’ll be great. The beach behind the hotel is about 10 feet wide and gets completely covered anytime a wave hits the beach so it’s impossible to hang out on the beach at the hotel unless you plan on doing nothing but swimming when there. Not a huge fan of the Kaanapali area in general. It’s a little more Vegas than Hawaii with al the giant hotels and shopping centers. If you’re looking for a more authentic Hawaii experience I’d recommend staying elsewhere on the island.

We have stayed here both times we have been to Maui and highly recommend it!! The pools are amazing. The kids had so much fun. The rooms are very clean and roomy. We were a family of 6 with a 2 bedroom partial ocean view and it was more than enough room. Staff is very friendly!! We can’t wait to go back!!!

If you want a great place to stay in Maui, this is it. We stayed in March 2020 just as COVID 19 restrictions began and so we ended up spending a lot of time at the resort and beach. I read some negative comments about the beach. The beach is a bit rocky as you enter the water, but is good for snorkeling. We watched a couple of sea turtles in the surf for hours on end one day. If your looking for a less rocky beach entrance, a short walk south on the beach will take care of that (in front of the Royal Lahiana). There is also a beach walk that connects several hotels/resorts and or course Duke's, which is outstanding and on site. Once you eat there they have you coming back with a free hula pie. We stayed in studio H623 and will again! Beachfront resort studio, full kitchen, washer/dryer, free underground parking, beach chairs, umbrella, boogie boards, etc., all for the price of a room.

The condo K212 was just wonderful. It was extremely clean and well appointed. Beds were comfy, bathrooms large, lanai quiet and peaceful. We can't say enough about what a great stay we had. Breakfast/coffee on lanai every day and quite a few dinners. Rainbows almost every day. Many pools well maintained. Towel service worked beautifully. Aina Market was convenient for lunch sandwiches and for coffee. Beach was very small. We found ourselves going to Airport beach which was great. The beachwalk was so convenient and several times we walked the whole way to the Hyatt. Duke's restaurant was so good; however, we found we needed reservations several days in advance. Poolside service was great for either drinks or lunch. Servers were wonderful. Parking worked great. Wristbands worked just fine too. Only negative - the trash/recycle room was gross and had many bugs on the floor and crawling up the walls. There should be a solution for this and the only one I can think of is more pest control. I must add there was never a bug in our condo or in the hallways as has been reported in other reviews. Would we go back - definitely!! Honua Kai is a beautiful resort.
