We stayed for 7 days in the resort. Overall, we had a great stay. Pros - Great location. There are so many beach areas by the hotel. The one right in front is a little rocky but if you walk past Lava lava beach club, there are a lot of beach spots with good waves. We also visited Hapuna and Kua Bay which are close by for bodyboarding. Restaurants - The Kings and Queens markets are walkable. Access to many restaurants there. Hilton's Nui Italian had good food too. Lava lava has good food and the setting is awesome. Snorkelling and sea turtles - Snorkelling is great around the lava lava beach club. We also saw sea turtles on land and in the water while snorkelling there. We also visited Beach 69 which is close by and Kaahalu Beach (awesome - felt like an aquarium) for snorkelling. The heated infinity pool and the hot tubs are relaxing and fun for the whole family. Sunsets are great. Cons - Being a family hotel, the double beds are a little too small and tight. I wish they had rooms with Queen beds. Cafe is open only till 11AM and the restaurant is not that good. The nights with specials are ok. We had a package that included snorkelling kit for 2 every day but they said that was an old package and they said we had to rent them now. The rental at the resort is like $30 per day. We rented from Hulakai in Kings shops for about $25 a week. Lots of things are available only when requested - housekeeping, privacy sign (housekeeping came knocking at 8.45 am)

Absolutely beyond disappointed in this property. Paid a lot more money to be in the Hale building-the room was average, nothing special. It did have a nice view. I paid the “bed and breakfast” rate and when I checked in was told there was no breakfast buffet due to Covid but would get a $50 credit towards food every day. Why offer the “bed and breakfast” rate if there is no buffet available? The rate should be removed from the website if it is not available. Total bait and switch. The hotel pool was overcrowded and dirty every day we were there (5 days). We asked to rent a cabana the first day we were there and they were booked for all 5 days. How does a resort on the beach not have a large supply of cabanas? They let people not even staying at the hotel get the very few areas around the pool with umbrellas. Even the pool employees commented on how frustrating it was. We had to fry in the sun all but one afternoon when someone who happened to be under an umbrella left and we raced to grab it. The very last day we were there a lady went around the pool checking to see if people had pool bands the rest of the time non resort guests were able to use the pool and chairs freely. This Marriott is more like a motel and absolutely not worth the money. The food was mediocre at best and way overpriced. The cocktails were expensive and left a lot to be desired. Food from the grocery store down the block was far better and less expensive. For the most part, the waitstaff & housekeeping were nice and tried their best. Absolutely would not recommend this hotel. Truly awful and a complete waste of money. Contemplated checking out after the first night and wish I had.

It was a great place to spend a family vacation. Loved the swimming pool area, it was beautiful and very well maintained. There were three different swimming pools, three hot tubs, and a slide. There was a nice trail that takes you directly to the beach. The lobby was cozy, comfortable and there were crafts sessions for families. Our room was clean, nice, no wierd smells and had a big bathroom. We were on the first floor with an exit to a green area and a short walk to the swimming pool. There were two shopping centers located nearby. There was a grocery store, Starbucks and a few restaurants under 15 min walk. There were only a few cons that made our stay less relaxing. First of all, the restaurant had very limited food options, except for obvious hamburgers and pizzas. And the quality of the food was terrible for the price we had to pay for it! It was so disappointing that we had to plan ahead of time all our meals outside of the hotel. When we saw food options at the hotel restaurant we tried to book a table at 5-6 restaurants nearby and nothing was available (for four people), so I would highly recommend to make dinner reservations a few days in advance. The other issue was a terrible urine smell outside of our room, at the Lanai area. We called the front desk a few times and even stopped by to ask in person, but nothing changed and we never got any response from them or any solution. The other thing, we felt like our first floor Lanai was a trash can. Looks like there were families who kept throwing their unfinished snacks like oreos, chips, half empty food boxes off their balcony directly to our Lanai and we kept calling the front desk to keep cleaning it. Overall we loved our stay but next time we would ask for a different room location.

LESS SERVICE + MORE FEES! Not Impressed With Covid Compromises

I believe the hotel has conceded a lot of their hospitality and services due to Covid concerns. The location is prime, on a beautiful beach with historic fish ponds and the pool area had some nice features. However, our "pool view" room, which came at an increased rate, was on the first floor with a tree in front of the lanai that overlooked just a corner of two lounge chairs on a lawn leading to the pool. The hotel building is unremarkable with badly worn carpet in the common areas. Our room was long and narrow, sufficiently clean and comfortably appointed, but awkwardly arranged with a deep shelf behind the bed, so you had to reach behind you to access anything on the "bedside" table. We woke early on our first morning to stake out a couple of pool chairs and then headed to breakfast at the poolside restaurant within view, but were intercepted by a staff member who informed us our things would be "confiscated" if we didn't return to our chairs within 30 minutes. (There were still plenty of empty chairs, as well as the majority of which, like our own, were occupied with just towels, etc., so it's unclear why we were singled out for this threat.) Since breakfast (notoriously overpriced and decidedly mediocre) took more than 90 minutes and arrived cold, my husband and I took turns revisiting our lounges and rearranging things). We were reluctant to take a walk, go to the restroom or take a dip in the pool at the same time after that! There is no bell service, housekeeping only on request, reduced pool servers--all concessions we understood and felt were somewhat reasonable. But our 4-day stay was pretty disappointing overall. We enjoyed our time at the beach much more than the resort pool which was crowded with kids (perhaps one of the pools could be designated as adults only?) and did not seem particularly clean or sanitized. Since the Marriott is not currently providing any beach chairs for guests, we could have just as easily come from the public parking area with our own blanket. Likewise, the meals we picked up from the market at Queen's Shops were better than the hotel restaurant offerings. Definitely visit A-Bay for sea and sunsets, but temper your expectations of this resort. Oh! Watchout for those bogus "Resort Activity Fees" (plus tax! HA!) that are salt in the wounds of an already compromised experience. We didn't do yoga or make leis, but we paid heartily for the opportunity in any case. (This is from loyal Marriott customers and a former employee!)

This is by far one of my favorite Marriott Resorts and we’ve stayed at several on other Hawaiian islands, in Florida, Spain and France. Loved the oceanfront two bedroom unit for its clean, contemporary lines. Our balcony comfortably accommodated our family as we took in spectacular sunsets and star speckled skies. The on-site restaurant featured family-friendly meal specials and the staff were super friendly. Can’t say enough kind words about the pool personnel. I recommend renting shade - two options, a cabana that can accomplish 4 loungers or a pool bed that fits three comfortably. Also there’s golf nearby and lots of walking paths across a gated community filled with other resorts and those lucky enough to live here full time. We’re definitely returning.
