    An iconic building in Havana

This hotel was very interesting, from a different era and took us back to the 1930's. The building is iconic and very impressive. The main reception area and lobby are very impressive to and there is a laid back atmosphere in the cocktail bar out in the garden area off the main reception area. The lifts were amazing. Unfortunately the bedrooms were not good. Our room was dark and dirty ( the carpets had not been hoovered, there was hair in the bath and the bath was discoloured and had a hole in it. The window ledges were dusty and the runners on the bed were dirty. We were moved to another room which was equally grubby. Hotel staff were called and the issue was sorted out but wasted 2 hours of our last evening in Cuba. Breakfast was good and there were lots of choice. Drinks at the cocktail bar were reasonably priced.

I spent four nights with my 20 & 16-year-old children, and we had a blast. Comfortable rooms, above satisfactory meals, an amazing cabaret, the best terrace in La Havana, very courteous staff, amazing views & well priced. At some time of the day we would enjoy either a Mojito or a Pina Colada at the terrace. In the afternoon they have a Cuban trio and, in the evenings, live music. Nice ambiance to mingle. They offer guided tours within the hotel grounds every day. Tips: Remember not do drink water from the tap. Don't rent old convertibles inside the hotel. Much cheaper outside.

We started our trip to Cuba with a few nights in Hotel Nacional de Cuba and were immediately transported back to a different era. It is more than just a hotel - it is an iconic part of the past and it was so exciting for us to experience that. It is a 5 star hotel but if you are only looking for that you may be disappointed as some of the rooms are showing their age and it is trapped in time but this is part of the colour of the place, Breakfast was excellent, room was spacious, view to Malecon lovely, sitting on the terrace listening to live music sipping mojitos made us so happy that we were there! The tour of the hotel was excellent. Aileen gave us a tour for 1.5 hours - including a visit to Lucky Luciano’s suite with Frank Sinatra’s adjoining room and we climbed down to the bunkers where the missiles were situated during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Don’t miss this!

I was expecting a rundown hotel, living on past glories. How wrong I was. I ate in all of the eating places, and drank in all of the bars except one one. All were good, and by western standards, quite cheap. Room was fine, cleaners chatted if I was about, and kept it tidy. Special mention has to go to the girl playing the violin over breakfast, and to Aeleen for a very entertaining and informative tour of the hotel. Faults - none at all. Loved it. Glad I stayed a week. Perfect place to relax.

The place is historic and grand. There are peacocks in the gardens and amazing interiors. The swimming pool, money exchange facilities and room service are excellent. The room itself - room cleaning is not the greatest. Toilets flush intermittently, hot water is only available some of the time. Some of the issues have to do with Cuban infrastructure and not the hotel. However the maids who "cleaned" our room were very insistent for gifts on top of the tips we left. And the hotel tried to overcharge a large number of people in our group for minibar/coffee we did not consume. It happened to enough people in the group that we noticed a pattern. That and the maids' behaviour left us with a bad taste. I much prefer Cuban homestays.
