WestJet Christmas MiracleFort McMurray Strong

We invited residents of Fort McMurray to a Christmas party where they could take their minds off the stress of the past seven months and (hopefully) create new family memories.

Little did we know they'd have as much impact on us as we had on them.

Families affected by the fireMichael Jesso

Prior to the event, we met with several families who were affected by the fire in Fort McMurray and asked them to tell us about their experience. Meet Michael Jesso; his story touched and inspired us and one of our own WestJetters, Jennifer, had a special message for him.

Escaped the fire, but lost everythingThe Hordichuk family

The Hordichuk family managed to evacuate Fort McMurray with the majority of their irreplaceable family items in their trailer. A short while later, their trailer was stolen – with everything in it. Jade was moved by their story and hoped to help them find the strength to continue forward.

Christmas Miracle in Fort McMurrayWhy we did it

As we talked to our friends in Fort McMurray, one of the common themes that emerged was that many residents felt forgotten and that the approaching Christmas season wasn't going to be the same. They needed a boost over the holidays, so it was an easy decision for us to focus this year's Christmas Miracle on a very deserving community.

It took a lot of love and a lot of planning to bring our Snowflake Soiree to life.

Miracles of Christmas Past

12,000 mini miracles

In 2015 we celebrated WestJet's 12,000 mini miracles day. WestJetters across our network donned blue Santa hats and joined Blue Santa with a goal of making 12,000 mini miracles happen over a 24-hour period. We asked our guests to join in on the magic and help spread holiday cheer all day.

Spirit of Giving

In 2014 we brought a snowy Canadian Christmas to a community in Dominican Republic that is close to our hearts. We surprised residents of Nuevo Renacer with a Christmas event and built a playground for the town's children.

Real-time giving

In December 2013 we set out to capture the magic of the Christmas season with an experience that would surprise and amaze the guests who were on two flights from Hamilton and Toronto to Calgary. Harnessing the power of technology, and enlisting over 175 WestJetter volunteers, we managed to not only buy gifts for our guests while they flew, but to get them the actual gifts they asked for. The resulting video went viral and was viewed in every country in the world. We learned that miracles really do happen when we all work as one.

Flash mob

Our Christmas surprise tradition began in 2012. We surprised our guests with a flash mob in the Calgary International Airport boarding lounge as they waited for a red-eye flight to Toronto. With the help of a of WestJetters, we turned a sleepy boarding lounge into the North Pole in 60 seconds.
