Photo: Visit Mesa

So you’d like to go to Arizona, but you’re not sure you’re feeling Phoenix? Or maybe you just want to switch things up a bit? Either way, we’d like to introduce you to Mesa. Where is Mesa? It’s 20 miles east of Phoenix, really close enough to be a suburb and to enjoy everything that’s enjoyable about Phoenix without actually being in Phoenix, and far enough away to be its own decent size city. Mesa is Arizona’s third-largest city, with a population just under half a million people. Mesa was originally settled by the Hohokam people, Native North Americans who pioneered a system of canals that is still in evidence in Mesa today. Today the city retains much of its frontier charm, and its storied history and rustic nature is evident in the Mesa Grande ruins, the Park of the Canals, hiking the Wind Cave Trail at Usery Mountain, and even in excursions like tubing on the Salt River.
Other attractions in Mesa include Cactus League baseball games at Hohokam Stadium in early spring, the Commemorative Air Force Museum, and of course, over 300 days a year of sunshine. You’re never more than a step away from recreation in the great outdoors in Mesa: from championship golf, to hiking, to mountain biking to loads of sightseeing opportunities, the possibilities really are endless. In short Mesa, is everything you love about Arizona–just a slightly different way of getting there.
