The Mayan Express is a tour company working with Mayans and the Ancient Roots program. Its Coba Sunset Tour transports you to Coba, an archaeological site covering an area of about 6 sq. km that thrived during the classic period (300-900 A.D.).
Back then, Coba was an important hub for politics and commerce. Mayans moved goods and services in the area between the eastern coast and part of what is now called the Yucatan Peninsula. Today, it's a draw for travellers, but it does not get as crowded as Chichen Itza - the most well known Mayan site. All in all, Coba is a rewarding alternative trip if you want to see Mayan ruins without the crowds.
