We once again had a wonderful time at Hali’i Kai! The location on the Big Island can’t be beat and all the staff at front check in and Ocean Club are so genuinely nice and helpful!! Our condo was very clean and well stocked with everything we needed!! We booked through Waikoloa Vacation Rentals and Rob and staff were fantastic to work with!! We are booked with them again next year and plan on returning yearly!!!! We already miss the beautiful sunsets, whale watching and wonderful food and drinks from the Ocean Club!!! Aloha! This place (the grounds) are beautiful & tranquil... Pool area is very nice, although we didn't use it. Rooms are individually owned, so it depends on what you get. Our unit 18C had some Chinese decor, & not to our taste... but otherwise worked fine. This room ended up being a nightmare later on (story to come!). Garden view Lanai was peaceful. Our problem started with customer service. I called in a couple days before to ask if my brother who was coming from Japan could check in early, since his flight gets there hours before ours. Lady said theres no early check in... but he is welcome to walk around the pool area. She sounded very annoyed, and asked if she could call me back since she was really busy checking other guests in. I said it's ok, thanks anyway... & we ended the conversation. That was my first impression of Halii Kai. By the time my brother got there, the woman on the phone was there... and she seemed nice in person. We got our room & all was well... until on our last full day of our vacay. My brother casually told us during breakfast that there's little baby roaches in his room (master bedroom). He said they were on his bed & he killed one. I said that doesn't sound right... So I checked his bed after ... Low & behold, a small bug on his pillow. I put the sucker in a bag & called the lady. She had a maintenance guy come by who looked at the bug and confirmed it's a bedbug! I called the lady back & she was apologetic but seemed irritated with me asking for updates every 30 minutes. We were stuck in our room. We couldn't go snorkeling like we planned that morning. She proceeded to tell me if I keep calling her, she can't talk to the pest control guy. I wanted to know if she knew a store where we can buy bed bug spray. No help. So I did my own research, & found a store in Waikoloa to buy tea tree oil. Sprayed our luggage and backpacks with it, & washed and dried all our clothes. That was our day. We were starving by a little past noon, and no calls. They get mad when we call, but won't call us to assure us of anything. They promised us another room and all we did was wait for hours. After stopping by the office, they said we can sleep in another room, take a shower & bring one pair of clothes in a trashbag, but have to leave our stuff back at the other room. We had to go back in forth between the 2 places and we had to re-wash and re-spray everything in the morning before leaving. It was a nightmare, & to top it off.. they told me the general manager would call me the next day. Not one call. No discount for our troubles, & no sorry. Nothing. My mom paid good money for this birthday trip for my brother & I. This was kind of a once in a lifetime trip. We still had a great time in Hawai'i but this dampened our experience a bit. Driving around... Mauna Lani is very nice. Close to a beautiful beach & I read that there's a sense of aloha there, so maybe go there if it's a special occasion!

Ocean front & golf course view - 11B condo

We stayed here for 8 nights and it was perfect! Upon your arrival at the gate is to remember to ENTER the # BUTTON before your code to get it! Our ocean front 11B condo was on the ground floor which we like having easy access from our patio to pool/workout room clubhouse. We were 2 buildings away to the pool area so it took only a few minutes to get there. I worked out every morning with a nice ocean view. They also had extra mats if you wanted to do some yoga or floor exercises. The clubhouse also has a bar where you can ordered drinks and food in the evening. If you don't have a view from your condo - the pool area is the place to visit to watch the sunsets. Just remember to bring your condo keycard to get in. Our condo was well stocked with everything you needed to cook meals. I don't think they have any one bedroom condo rentals in the resort so we had an extra bedroom of two twin beds. The laundry room was near the entrance and across the second bedroom. Our master bedroom was large with double sink bathroom. Thankfully, it also had a bathroom scale to keep you in check. There is no beach access but you can walk over to the left of the golf course and visit the Hilton Resort next door (which is huge resort) and walk along the path to see the other resorts on the waterfront and then you can walk along the beach for about a couple of miles. At the end of the beach walk we discovered Lava Lava Beach Club where you can have a nice lunch and drinks. The other walk called Fishermen's Trail is on your right (past the pool) through lava fields and is very difficult in some areas. You must wear good walking shoes and have good balance for this trail. It is not good for any running or to wear flip flops on this trail. If a little shopping urge hits you, it is only a 5 minute drive over to Kings Place or Queen Market Place (right across the street from each other). The Island Gourmet store in Queen Market is more expensive than Foodland (all groceries is expensive in Hawaii) but there is a Foodland close by but just not in these two locations. We would stay here again.

Caution with unit capacity vs. actual sleeping capacity

Our group: 5 adults and 3 children spent our Xmas holiday in 17F. Overall, the unit is very nice, tastefully decorated and well-appointed. It had virtually every kitchen utensil would could imagine with plenty of cutlery and silverware. Views from the down and upstairs lanais of the ocean and evening sunset were spectacular. It says ocean view and doesn't disappoint. Our disappointment was in the sleeping arrangements. The unit is advertised as a 3-bedroom that sleeps 8. However, the bedrooms were: 1 king, 1 queen and 1 queen futon. On our first arrival, we found this and then began hunting for the pull out couch. None exists. We went to manager's office and the lovely woman on duty said that the 8 persons is a unit capacity, not necessarily that it has the right furniture for sleeping 8 in the unit. To her credit, she apologized profusely saying that the onsite property management have this problem consistently. She offered to have two queen-sized air mattresses with additional linens delivered to the unit. While not ideal, it was our only option. One of the queen inflatable mattresses' fit well in the master bedroom, but the second couldn't fit in either bedroom and became a daily headache of inflating / deflating. So if considering this property for a group of six or more, consider your sleeping arrangements prior to arrival. The property itself was lovely. The pool / restaurant area was very nice, but felt very small against the crowd on the holidays. We assumed it worked well for the "normal" crowd, but a second pool on the property would not be a bad idea. The staff working the pool / restaurant were exceedingly nice and kind despite seeming understaffed for the crowd. Drinks and food were good, but you had to wait a bit. Our only critique was of our other vacationers, lots of other large family's claimed chairs by the pool in the morning, but would golf, go for morning excursions, etc, but not give up the unused chairs. This seemed especially true of actual owners on property. I made the mistake of asking a grouping of eight chairs, only two being used, if I could have one for our 76 y/o grandmother while the rest of us at on towels on the grass next to the outside shower and the woman made it clear preference is for owners. I would guess the pool staff likely monitors this in most times of the year, but as I mentioned, were incredibly task-saturated keeping up with the crowds. Since we were doing excursions via the next door Hilton Waikoloa, we ended up getting a group pass to use their pools / lagoon which was great - a kids paradise. Even though it was busy over there, they still had room. I would encourage anyone considering this property, look into day passes at Waikoloa especially if you are visiting in high season. Summary: Lovely unit with a lovely property. Easy walk on the coastal trail to the Hilton next door. Staff helped with our issues to the best of their ability. If it weren't for the sleeping situation, I would call the property excellent. This is especially true since the staff on site seem to know this "marketing ploy" by Castle Resorts causes this issue quite frequently. So the dishonesty in marketing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

If you’re staying at Hali Kai avoid unit 1F. It was my son, daughter in law and their 1 year and my husband and I. We stayed with a baby and thought she could stay in the 3rd bedroom but it was a townhouse and 2 bedrooms up and one downstairs. So basically the 3rd bed went unused. We then tried to get just a 2 bedroom and they wouldn’t switch us. The unit was dirty and had no garden view. And the farthest from the pool. We’ve stayed there before and it was wonderful, maybe it was just that unit.
