    We have stayed here before and given glowing reviews. Apparently the management has changed an the decline is obvious at every turn. The biggest disappointment was with he quality of the food. Breakfast was still pretty good, but the selections at lunch were pared down and the primary offering was a buffet. Dinners, which used to be exceptional were hit and miss at best. We honestly had some courses that were either cold or inedible...and the wait staff on those occasions, listened to our complaints and offered no alternative. We still enjoyed our dinner in Azia and the Italian restaurant but the bar has definitely been lowered. We won't be back!

    Excellent all-inclusive resort with great food and serene views

    My girlfriend and I stayed at Royal Hideaway for 10 days during the summer of 2019. We are in our late 20s-early 30s and were glad to come here for the quality over quantity. We highly recommend it if you want to eschew parties, tiered wristbands, and upcharges at other all-inclusive resorts. Instead, you will find a place that is serene with a beautiful view from the infinity pool, and intimate reservation-only dining that is cooked to order. While the resort is smaller, we appreciated not encountering crowds (which we saw at larger and non adult-only resorts nearby)… though if you are someone that wants a lot of structured activities and nightlife, the bigger resorts may be better for that. The staff were all excellent and attentive. Especially: Nikolas, our server at Las Ventanas (we went three times!), Jose, our Villa 23 concierge, Antonio at The Deck/Grill, and Diego Alvarez at Spices. Food was excellent-- I’m generally not a fan of most cruise/resort buffets, and food at Royal Hideaway is miles better than cruise food I’ve previously had. In terms of resorts, I’ve dined at Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbaras, CA and Pelican Hill, Newport Beach, CA, and the food at Royal Hideaway was better despite being all-inclusive. They only have one buffet (breakfast) and everything else is cooked to order. The executive chef is Michelin starred— and while a good portion of the menu is suited for international tastes, there are some standout unique dishes such as the Aguachile Negro (oyster and squid ink-based aguachile) at Las Ventanas. We went to Spices (Mexican) towards the end of our trip, thinking that it would be more generic in flavor for international visitors, but instantly regretted it as the food is excellent there too and we wished we had dined there more. Palazzo (Italian) was great, and the place to find a Baked Alaska if you are looking for old-school desserts. The Deck/The Grill is nice for casual dining. Azia was also good and we had our own private room. We had sushi making lessons at Azia as well. They also have afternoon tea! Drinks were excellent— I especially appreciate the breadth of drinks from poolside highballs to classic cocktails. The drinks also seemed to be prepared differently depending on if you order poolside, during lunch, or at Las Ventanas for dinner. All drinks we had were included, and they have quite the liquor selection. All the Tequila was blue agave based, no cheap Jose Cuervo, and they have mezcal as well. Travel staff was also good at highlighting smaller travel companies that support local business when appropriate, and the larger travel companies when it doesn’t make much difference. We did Chichen Itza, Tulum-Coba (with a village tour and cenote, through alltournative… the underground cenote was the coolest experience we’ve ever had), and Xcaret amusement park. The only weak points, which were very minor: we visited during off season so there was no dining at Club Royale. Beach and pool towels were harder to find later in the day. We are very much looking forward to returning to Royal Hideaway once COVID-19 has ended and it is safe to do so.

    We stayed at Royal Hideaway in November 2019. We have stayed here a number of times and actually got married here in 2003. There were a number of maintenance issues which are probably due to austerity measures. On one occasion water went off at the pool area, including toilets next to the Deck restaurant. Needless to say toilets could not be flushed and it wasn't a pleasant sight. On another occasion there was an electrical fault at the beach area and there was no food available at the Deck restaurant. We were informed some guests managed to get something to eat at Spices restaurant but had to wait nearly ninety minutes. As we were leaving this day we decided to have high tea at Ventanas as we had no lunch. We waited outside Ventanas until 16:10 with no sign of high tea. My wife went to reception to ask if there was any problems at Ventanas and was assured everything was fine and would be open.We then went back to Ventanas and spoke to two staff who informed us there was no high tea today. So back to reception, to inform them of this. They now informed us they would be open tomorrow. We had previously told them we were leaving today and were waiting of our transport to the airport. So point is, terrible communication at reception and should they not have established what was happening at Ventanas rather than my wife and I? Sent an email to be forwarded to hotel General Manager and Ignacio Lazaro but no reply received. Need to raise standards and reply to emails.

    I've been to a handful of all-inclusive resorts and this was easily the best one. My partner and I wanted a quiet, restful trip and that's what we got this adults-only hotel. The resort isn't new so the rooms are definitely a bit dated but they're clean and well appointed. The bed was extremely comfortable and there was no partying or noise at night that kept us awake. The beach is one of the nicest I've seen! It's true that people claim the best pool chairs very early in the morning (the ones right on the pool, facing the ocean) but there was always plenty of extra seating and people come and go throughout the day so we were able to grab a great spot most days for a couple of hours when we weren't on the beach or doing other things. The cocktails are top notch and made with all of the best things! Definitely ask for what you want -- if you say tequila you'll get tequila; if you say Don Julio margarita with Cointreau, that's what you'll get. The staff were truly phenomenal, pleasant, courteous, and always going out of their way. We had a major crisis mid-way through our stay. My financée lost her engagement right now day and we weren't able to find it. We spent the next two days tearing our room apart and searching the entire property but couldn't find it. Several of the staff caught on and were quick to help. I were pretty sure that it had fallen into the sand so we showed them where we'd been sitting on the beach and they got shovels and a massive mesh contraption that they passed the sand through. Manuel and Carlos systemically dug up half the beach area for us. Ultimately it was found by a guest of the hotel who went down to help, but it was definitely all of their digging that made it possible. We lost a day to panic but were able to resume enjoying the rest of our trip because of them! They had also planned to have a friend from town come to the resort after he got off work with a metal detector and were going to try that if they weren't successful with the digging. Alfonso was the one who got the ball rolling by going to get his manager (Manuel). The two guys from the sports/animation team -- Gaby and Jay -- also helped out by getting on their hands and knees with us and going through the entire volleyball court where we were playing the day before. It was huge group effort and we were extremely grateful to find ring (we got engaged a few months ago!) Lovely people and great service all around. Food: listen, it's an all-inclusive. That said, it's the best all inclusive food I've ever had. We really liked the food at the beach bar and spices above for freshly prepared Mexican dishes. The Mediterranean place (forget the name) was also great and they have a wine list that you can order off (and pay for) if you want a proper bottle with dinner, which we did one night as a treat.
