  3. Andrews Sugar Factory

It is one of only two sugar factories still working on the island. Andrews Sugar Factory is located in the eastern parish of St. Joseph. Many years ago, it would have serviced only the sugar cane plantations of the eastern area of the island. Today, canes from all over the island are brought here to be ground into natural cane sugar. Persons interested in viewing the sugar manufacturing process should visit during the months of February to May, when the sugar cane harvest is underway. Although the market for sugar has declined steadily in recent year, sugar continues to be produced on the island, mainly for export. Its by-products include molasses, a major ingredient in the rum-producing process, and bagasse, an alternative fuel source. - Marsilyn Browne
