Speightstown is the most northerly town of Barbados and historically renowned for its shipping links with Bristol in England. It was even once nicknamed Little Bristol. In 1941, following a fire in the town, the government of Barbados took over a portion of land on the seaside. Here, they built a bandstand which was the venue of many a concert by the Royal Barbados Police Force Band. In 2004, the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. undertook a complete refurbishment of the esplanade. Today it features a gazebo, an entertainment dais, upgraded seating facilities and washroom facilities. A beautiful location for a concert at sunset, the esplanade continues to be a choice venue for open air concerts and other events. -Marsilyn Browne
