St. David's Island was once a strategic location for Bermuda's defense. The battery found on the cliffs of Great Head Park at the eastern tip of island features breech-loading guns that date back to the early 1900s. The small battlement was manned during World War II as a lookout for German U-boats. Views of the Atlantic are spectacular from the St. David's Battery vantage point. Walking up to the fort, you'll see lots of growth from native plants like palmetto, allspice, and fiddlewood. You can also except a committee of birds and other wildlife to welcome you to the island. St. David's Battery is one of many reasons to visit St. David's Island, but it makes for a great excuse to explore outside Hamilton.
