Practical Information

Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis or Saint Claire of Assisi Cathedral is one of the major religious structures of the city. The original building was built in the 17th Century where Parque Leoncio Vidal is now located. However it was razed down to enlarge the park in 1923. The current Gothic Revival edifice took 14 years to build due to controversies. It finally was consecrated in 1954. Dedicated to Clare of Assisi, this beautiful church is known for its impressive collection of stained glass windows and a colossal figure of the Virgin Mary (la Virgen del camino). During the initial stages of the Cuban Revolution, this statues was placed on the way to Havana to bless anyone who comes to the city or goes out of the city. After it was removed from there it vanished for over thirty years. It was found in 1995 in a ditch in 1995.
