Merchant City came into existence somewhere around the 1750s. Those days, when Glasgow was a hub for tobacco and cotton trade, affluent merchants resided here because of the close proximity of the place with the ship building yards at the river. With the advent of the 19th Century, this neighborhood became more popular for its busy streets graced with lively bars, eclectic restaurants, museums, galleries, entertainment venues, boutiques, shopping centers and quite a few of the architectural wonders which are reminiscent of the olden times. Merchant City is also a venue for many of Glasgow's events and can be seen bustling throughout the year with distinct activities. In 2006, Merchant City was the proud recipient of the The Great Neighbourhood Award from The Academy of Urbanism.
