Outdoor Activities

The Playa Olas Altas, which means "Tall Waves Beach" in English, is the beach around which tourism began springing up in the 1950s. The beach used to be very popular for sports-fishermen, including John Wayne, who, it is rumored, had a fishing boat here. Since the advent of Mazatlan's tourist zone, the Zona Dorada, Playa Olas Altas has become less of the main attraction and therefore less crowded, so it is an especially good option for the budget-conscious traveler as this area tends to not jack up the prices as much as in the Zona Dorada. It is now popular with many locals as well as surfers.
