Practical Information

One of the most well-known religious structures in the city, the Santiago Church was built in the 17th century. Also known as the Templo de Santiago Apóstol, the church’s stone doorways, sculptures and the roof that seems to have been cut in waves, all add to the beauty of this historical structure. An important landmark and historical institution, the church gave rise to the growth of the surrounding area, from a former Mayan Village to the present-day bustling Merida neighborhood. If you want to catch a glimpse at a slice of local history, then certainly head to the Santiago Church.
