The Emerson String Quartet is a string quartet based in New York that resides at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Since forming in 1976, the Emerson String Quartet has become one of the United States' most revered performance ensembles, with over twenty acclaimed albums and nine Grammy Awards to its name. Named after the great American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Emerson String Quartet has grown to become a distinctly American institution, and one of the country's greatest contributions to performance and practice of classical music for strings in quite some time.
