Built in the 19th Century by the Hudson's Bay Company at the peak of coal mining, The Bastion is considered to be the oldest structures of the city and the only one remaining of the Hudson's Bay Company's buildings. This octagonal, three-story wooden fortified tower is a prominent landmark in Nanaimo. Tours are provided end of May till beginning of September. Get to know the history about the company and trade at the first floor. The second floor is more about the building's role as a fortress. See the tools, objects and other historic artifacts used in that era by miners at the top level.
