Ahmir Khalib Thompson, better known known by his Questlove moniker, was born in Philadelphia in 1971. His dad was Lee Andrews of the seminal 1950s doo-wop group Lee Andrews and the Hearts and during Questlove's youth, his parents didn't want to hire a baby sitter, so they brought the child on tour with them where he was reared around musicians and the constant hubbub of life on the road. By the age of seven, he was playing drums and by the age of 13, Questlove had become so proficient on the kit that he became a music director. After graduating from Philadelphia's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Questlove and a few classmates formed the group The Square Roots, which would later evolve into simply The Roots. The band's characteristic style of alternative hip hop managed to find a large listener base throughout the aughts and lead to a gig as the house band for the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon talk show. Questlove will often play DJ shows, where his diverse knowledge of music is on full display.
