Trinidad and Tobago's national bird, the spectacularly vibrant Scarlet Ibis is protected by legislative decree with the help of the acclaimed Caroni Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located within the Caroni Swamp that comprises of 13,865 acres (5,611 hectares) of dense mangroves in the North-West of Trinidad. Named after the expansive wetlands that sustain it, the Caroni Bird Sanctuary has been a safe haven for birds since the year 1953 when it was established. The sanctuary is known for its exciting boat tours that leave late in the afternoon, meandering through the swamps, thus enabling visitors to catch a glimpse of the highly-endangered Scarlet Ibis, Great pondhawk dragonfly, and Cook's tree boa among many others.
